Re: Challenge 908: Free the dolphins
I liked Denis's second entry so much that I was curious as to how it would look if I had done it. I think the jury is still out.

The first image is from Denis, and the second is the "messed-up" version from me.

Very pretty Loyd

Something of an experiment:

I am afraid that in my case the jury is no longer out and has returned a verdict of guilty!

Dennis' original image is a quite astonishingly accomplished piece of work which, above all, looks completely real.

The new version looks grainy, noisy and has undesirable white fringing around the ship and its rigging in particular. It's starting to look like a not very clean cutout. As ever with your re-makes the shadows are suffering from loss of density and are starting to look 'dirty'.

What I find most disturbing is that it looks so obviously post processed and that is trampling on it's remarkably lifelike aspect. It lacks completely the conviction of the original.

Sorry Michael. We have very different tastes here. I really don't mean to sound negative, but, if you put 'em up, then I think that leaves us free to comment.

Your 'experiment' is most intriguing Michael. The effect I often dislike and just criticised in your re-make of Dennis' image is extremely interesting here. It makes the sea look like an animated steel engraving. It's odd and unnatural but I find it rather lovely

Why? Well for no other reason than these are the images that came up in my searches.

Ant - Nicely done, the 'bucking' dolphin ride is a great touch.

Oh no David you've shot the "Red Baron" [ created over ten years ago] out of the sky.

Seriously, very well-put critique that isn't predicated on a vague opinion. You have provided me with valuable feedback--thanks.

David, I thought it would be prudent (for both of us) to show you the original "big wave" scene and my consequent enhancement of recolouring.

I like your waves Michael, I really wish that I had thought of 'surfing' dolphins...

There's something very satisfying about that Michael. Can't quite put my finger on why, but I really like it.

What? You searched for Dolphin and up popped our Nigel?

On second look I think it's something to do with the way the curve of the dolphins echoes the waves behind them. It all fits together.

No, he popped when searching for "eating fish and chips" as he would if I had searched "drinking bear"

And a few other terms less suitable for a respectable forum.

Re: Challenge 908: Free the dolphins
Interesting effect Loyd.

A convoluted and very time-consuming affair where each alternate frame (30 frames) had each row of waves higher or lower--phew!

Re: Challenge 908: Free the dolphins
All of my plans for this week have been delayed due to heavy rain and flooding... now going into the third straight day, I've had little else to do other than fool around with dolphins.

Wow, that is so cool Lloyd. Well done.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. There's some very interesting entries this week.

I'm intrigued with Michael's texturized version of my sailing ship. Had I posted the 72 dpi version as well as the 96 dpi, you could have done a pointillist version to... David's spot on with his comments. The sun is just out of view. In 15 meters sailing time, the ship will be silhouetted by the sun.

Thinking about silhouettes, I had this idea of a mermaid freeing the dolphin's soul from it's confines. A bit out of my wheel house but here goes...
