Nice work everybody. Yes, war can bring out a nasty side from normal folk let alone ambitious officers. It happened in S.A. during the Boer war to. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Not quite sure of the reference here. But a really marvellous job turning the figures to to stone. Medusa first class!! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Nice job everyone. I was half way through the challenge and my SSD decided it has had enough. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 931: The Duke of Cumberland
First to fill the plinth this week was Ant Snell, with a terrific view of a butcher from a low angle - how did you find that? And how much of him did you have to draw? Cumberland sausages, indeed. And the added flowers work well. I thought GKB might have a negative opinion of the Duke, given the history. Some fine blood-spattering there, Gordon, and the tone of the hand matches the plinth well. I think the cuff of a sleeve would have helped to merge it into the plinth. A traditional image from lwc, featuring the original statue – curious, really, as my researches tell me it was pulled down in 1868, so this photo must have been of the replica made in soap in 2012. Nicely posed. I think Ben Boardman’s battle image neatly sums up the conflict, and the reason why the old Duke was so disliked. The added smoke adds well to the atmosphere. I like the floral saltire (look it up, sassenachs) in the second entry, and the added biography at the end. A clever twist from Frank, showing how the new statue was made from an engraving. I have to point out, though, that traditionally horses are longer than they are wide. Perhaps flip him horizontally? ![]() This week michael sinclair is bang on topic, with an array of Scots fighters clearly none too pleased with the statue. Mind you, relocating it from London to the highlands must have really annoyed them. I like the scrolling sky, but a couple of points: first, we can see the horizon, but those are not horizon-level clouds (and remember you can get horizon-level skies here). But second: why do you export your animations as vast GIF files, rather than as smooth movie files? You can of course also do this in Photoshop. Mystic Tom has gone all mystic on us again, with some celestial fire rising out of the old plinth. I like the night time effect, with the moon just visible through the leaves. The glow on the ground was a nice touch. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sausage statue before, so I’m indebted to Josephine Harvatt for showing me one. I like the leafy shading, but why is most of the shadow on the top rather than the bottom? Or is that just where it’s burnt? A finely-wrought couple from Mariner, as neatly turned to stone as Medusa could have managed. I must admit I spent some time tinkering with this image using Puppet Warp to try and make it look as if we were viewing it more from below, but I gave up. A tricky one to manipulate! |

Yes, I tried that too, but it made his legs look far to long. Thanks Steve. |
