Re: Challenge 933: The steam drill
I'm back! After nearly three weeks of hell, I have finally reinstalled all my many programs after my super-computer was repaired from a catastrophic crash (£420--ouch, ouch!)

Good work everybody...except Gordon: in his case fantastic work.

Thank you all. I missed being here, too. Glad you are back too, Michael. That was an expensive crash!

Re: Challenge 933: The steam drill
First to fire up the steam drill this week was Frank, with a glorious reimagining of the machine. Everything about this is spot on: the position of the engineer’s hands, his colouring, the spin on the drill, the metal swarf, the clamp holding the new piece to the table… immaculate, Frank. A really fantastic piece of work.

I like the “Rosie the Riveter” approach in Ben Boardman’s striking entry, with its spirals of drilled steel popping out of the holes in that block of metal. The KitKat is a nice touch. Perhaps the drill tip needs a spotlight on it, to account for the lighting on the woman bending over it?

A great animation from GKB, with lost of expertly-crafted rotation action. I particularly like the counter rotation of the three conical cogs, although I must point out that logically the bottom one should be turning in the other direction. You need to sharpen that drill bit, though - it doesn’t seem to be making much impact on the metal bar.

Lots of steam in tooquilos's entry - with several rebuilt cog wheels. Plenty of action in the animated entry, with its surprisingly low-key music track. I really like all the rotation, but I’m not sure you’ve really got the hang of how drills work! They aren’t that stabby! But good to see how the holes in Swiss cheese are made.

A spotless workshop location from Mariner, with an engineer in a spotless overall about to operate the machine. A few points to make here: the diagonal strut on the left of the drill would surely pierce the window at that angle and proximity; the shadow cast by the overalls on the machine seems to cut off suddenly, and needs to respect the angles of the surfaces; and shouldn’t his shirt have some texture to stop it looking so flat?

I’m not sure michael sinclair’s image is an entry, in which case it’s even more off topic than usual, or just a celebration of return to the Forum with a repaired computer. I’ll assume the latter.

It was a rather odd way of stating “Number 1”!
