Ha, ha...lovely Mariner. Well done everybody. Nice Josephine. I've never experienced a white Christmas.

Had a quiet night at work so decided to toss the can in!

Michael, you're a shocking guy...lol. That was the first thing I thought of when I look at this weeks image. Is it great minds think alike or fools never differ..

Lloyd, love how your firework sparks are contained in the jar.

Thanksl Dennis.

Chris, I don't recognize the face in the jar, otherwise good work.

It’s Steve Jobs and his hand holding the 1st iPhone 😁

Thanks Mariner and Dennis, I didn't start out to use fireworks, it just evolved into what you see.

Re: Challenge 934: The phone jars
I started this one and then abandoned it after becoming distracted by the idea of fireworks. I had some free time today and decided to finish it...

Re: Challenge 934: The phone jars
First to fill the phone jars this week was lwc, with Captain Kirk beaming from one to the other. I like the fizzing smoke at the bottom, but Trekkies would be aghast at the depiction of him wearing his insignia on the wrong side in the first image. A spectacular second entry, complete with fireworks and complex rippling effects. I like how the sparks bounce off the floor. And the lightning works well in the third entry.

A then-and-now comparison from Ben Boardman, very neatly illustrating the leap in technology. I like the glass hand, the lightning and the overall concept, but what really impresses me here is the way you’ve rebuilt the background to remove the shop assistant. Beautifully done, and seamless! My only suggestion to improve it would be to adjust the angle of the box in the first jar:

Repair options from Frank, clearly displayed - I like the subtle slots that hold the phones, with the reflection of the logo. The twinkly lights add a lot of visual interest. And you even got the acute accent!

It’s Doctor Who from Ant Snell - the Matt Smith era, at a guess. Unfortunate for the poor chap to materialise inside a glass dome, though. You do need to watch your perspective!

Is it a bird? Is it a bolt of lightning? No, it’s michael sinclair sparking up an empty jar. I’m not sure I understand “this is only a representation of what this should look like” - surely that could be said of every entry on the Forum?

I laughed out loud at GKB's animation, and apologise for my lack of response! Beautifully done. How did you manage green screen while wearing a green shirt?

Fairytale stuff from DavidMac, with a couple of magical jars presided over by a beautifully lit mystic. A lot of effort here, and a gorgeous result. Has some Frenchman eaten that frog’s back legs, though?

Old vs new from tooquilos, with spectacular lighting. I can’t quite work out how the hand is holding the phone, or indeed what’s holding the hand up. Neither of these conundrums is resolved in the animated version, although I do find it very pretty to look at.

Ah, back to Steve Jobs and the first iPhone from 2007 in Born2Run's engaging entry. I like the theme of this, but I also like - Hotchippers take note - that this is the only entry so far to attempt ripple distortion on the objects inside the domes. Good work! (Incidentally, about once a year I rewatch the video of Steve Jobs launching the first iPhone. It’s not often you get to see history being made.)

Ballet time from Josephine Harvatt, with the Nutcracker proudly showing us his nuts. There’s only room for a pirouette in that jar! Seasonal indeed, Josephine. Hope you’re able to join us next Wednesday.

An almost total rebuild from Mariner, although unlike Dwindt I’m at a loss to interpret the story of the monkey, the feather duster and the little red book. Am I missing something obvious? I like the prescience of the score on the back wall - as it happens I’ll be in France on Saturday, and hope to find a bar where I can watch the game without being lynched if England win.

Early days of telephony from dwindt, with a neatly tangled cord running between the two cans. Can you get Facebook on those?

__________

The most important thing about putting stuff in jars is getting the reflections on there. The second most important thing is adding refraction: look how much the background is distorted through the jars in the original image.

Objects inside the jars would have roughly half that amount of distortion, since only half the amount of glass is doing the distortion. But look at what a difference it makes to the realism of the scene - compare the before and after:

Re: Challenge 934: The phone jars
Thank Steve

I didn’t use a green screen for this one as I thought I would have some green colour spillage which would have been difficult to get rid of. So I swapped my blue shirt for the green oneand used a blue screen instead. You can actually use any colour screen you like; just make sure you aren’t wearing any of that colour or you end up with a hole in your body😱

Re: Challenge 934: The phone jars
Thanks, Steve. The monkey is texting on his mobile phone. The feather duster belongs to the cleaner who has gone for a Gitane. As for the score, well let's hope I guessed it right. Don't announce to the pub that you are English - they might want wome revenge. Have a good time in France. Bring us back a good photo.

Re the angle of the box in the first jar - thank you Steve, I felt that the box angles were not quite right but couldn't fathom why.

HaHaHa! Yes I hadn't spotted that. They are there but they are lost in reflections.

By the way I did use ripple, just on the outer areas where distortion would be greatest. It some how looked forced so I reduced it to something almost imperceptible. Seems I succeeded!

Thanks Steve. For no apparent reason it was an uphill struggle.

Re: Challenge 934: The phone jars
Thanks Steve. I laid off on the refraction assuming only one front layer of a thin glass.
