Re: Challenge 951: Red Lion Square
David, I both accept and respect your view. I think it takes courage for me to put ideas out there, so that one can get "much-needed" feedback: that's how I learn! I've had 16 years of invaluable tutelage from Steve. PS that should read "I must be on topic, I must be on topic, I must be on topic... ![]() |

Re: Challenge 951: Red Lion Square
Thanks David... with many challenges I'm going for some silly 'sight gag', but this week's challenge was so 'task specific', that I tried to stay within the limits. |

2-second two-framer. I'm not completely confident with the perspective; however, if it evades detection from the "two eagles" then all is well. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 951: Red Lion Square
OK Michael, its my turn now! ![]() ![]() I have bad news and good news. The bad news is that you were right not to be completely confident. If you look at the image below a quick look at the vanishing points (green lines) places the horizon at about his mid level (red line). Above this line we would be looking up at him, which is the case so no problem. But below this line we would be looking down at him which certainly not the case. The huge giveaway is the plinth. If you look at its vanishing points (blue lines) it is clear they are headed for completely different and inconsistent destinations. In fact the camera taking the photo was even slighly below the plinth and far from looking down we are looking very slightly up at it. ![]() Now I use a 3D software that includes a tool for producing a virtual camera based upon analysis of the vanishing points in a 2D photograph and allowing you to 3D model within the context and perspective of that photograph. It's designed for architects and their clients to be able to accurately visualise their design in the context of its surroundings. Using this I have produced a very quick crude 3D model. It's just a bare line drawing with no renders or lighting or shadows. However it shows clearly how the perspective would work for a plinth placed at the very bottom of the image as you have done. It's quite an extreme perspective as one would expect because you can see that Steve used quite a wide angle lens for his picture. Please understand Michael this is not me trying to be clever it is a computer analysis using a tool designed specifically for this. ![]() Now for the good(ish) news. The top half of your statue fits very well above the horizon line and, although it is seen from below, the bottom half contains no strong clues to indicate this except for the plinth. If you hide the plinth, the end result, although technically still incorrect, is to my eye completely acceptable. Without the clue of the plinth it would take a very keen eye indeed to detect any problems and you could have got clean away with it!! ![]() ![]() That my ten centime's worth. I will be very interested to hear Steve's take on this. ![]() I'll not make a habit of this Michael, I promise. It's not our role. But you sort of led with your chin this week ........ ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Brilliant David! That's exactly the feedback I wanted! I'm indebted to you! I can now move on having had very good advice from you: this is how it should be, so thank you again. hmmm...I must resist the temptation to meddle in someone else's work, I must resist the temptation to meddle in someone else's work, I must resist the temptation to meddle in someone else's work... |

Re: Challenge 951: Red Lion Square
After a lot of searching on the Internet, I found an old albumen print from around 1865, proving that the statue has been around much longer than one would think... the image is heavily damaged, but still interesting. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 951: Red Lion Square
Micheal I don't consider myself an expert and that is not my role. However I hope I have presented cogent reason and not just opinion. Perspective and lighting were two of the principle parts of my professional life for more than fifty years. Although I often manage to get both wrong from time to time in these challenges (usually through shear sloppiness and laziness) it leaves me with a unfortunate ability to instantly spot anomalies of this sort in other people's work both instinctively and intellectually. Usually I keep my mouth closed but occasionally I speak up, as I did last week with t'other Michael where a very minor glitch in perspective existed in an otherwise nigh on faultless image. The more accomplished the image the more the tiny problems jump out. One of the reasons I love being here is that Steve knows this and I know I can rely on him to quickly point out when I fall short in what I consider to be my strengths. That's very good for me! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I love your creation of an old photo Loyd. It could be interesting to what would happen if one tried the new neural filters to restore it! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 951: Red Lion Square
I like the way you have used the engraving of him on the left side Frank and I really love the way you have left the little splash of light on the foreground left paving. The puddle round the plinth is a great touch Anna. Why Ganesh? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 951: Red Lion Square
Thank you David. I really admired your entries as well. I see we found the same statue.Lighting can be very tricky and changes by the moment. I particularly liked Loyd's 2nd and 3rd entries. I thought Gordon's was very innovative and we'll done. Agree - must be "On Topic" 😆😆😆 |
