You got me stumped Ant. Clever Dennis. Very nice Frank. Does the fact that in popular music there's a 'Stairway To Heaven' and a 'Highway to Hell' tell us anything about anticipated traffic levels ......... ? ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Some great - and very imaginative entries this week - but particulalry likes the elegance of David's cats which have me proper baffled. Mean while I went completely off piste with a tribute to The Eagles - you can check out any time you like but you can never leave ... ![]() _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

The idea is not new. I’ve simply done a version of my own.
I love this Jo! Really unexpected. One of my favourite tracks too. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 971: Escher's Hotel
Micheal, interestingly you have suffered from exactly the same minor perspective anomalies as I did with this one, but the result is very pleasing. As for ´Knife Grinders’, it represents a little over two years work. A bit more than the average challenge entry! I still consider it the best image I have ever done. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 971: Escher's Hotel
Thanks David. I ran out of time with this one. It took forever extracting that woodwork, and changing the perspective was another week's work. The caption "Juliet, Juliet, wherefore art thou Juliet?" would have said it all: I was going to put Romeo on the balcony but he would have been too small, so I would have had to zoom in on him, losing some of the left or right wing. Juliet was goiing to be hiding somewhere below, maybe with another man. No matter, it's been a good experience. |

Some stunning entries. Lloyd, your pc problem is bringing out some nice images. Well done...and Anna, lovely video and still image. David and these types of images always bring out amazing compositions...your grinder image is amazing. Re: Challenge 971: Escher's Hotel
First to play with the staircase this week was lwc, with a boy attempting to slide down a remarkably short length of bannister. Have to say, though, he does fit very neatly. I enjoyed the moose entry, and the staircase does mirror extremely well. A heavenly setting from tooquilos, the staircase neatly framing the celestial gates. I like the asymmetric composition, and the artfully-placed winsome angel. A great choice of background in the animated version, showing a really dedicated cutout. And… that song every guitarist I knew at university (including me) could play. A spectacular image from DavidMac, mirroring the scene to great effect. The added windows (and, of course, the trademark DavidMac lighting) add hugely to the ambience, and extending the scene backwards gives it tremendous depth. Interestingly, the most powerful feature in this symmetrical view is the asymmetric placing of the people: it adds real dynamism to the composition. Splendid. The combination of perspectives in the second entry is, um, interesting… but that ceiling/wall on the left does rather fight with the staircase. I have to say, David, your not having enough time to join in is very different to everyone else’s not having enough time to join in. I enjoyed Ant Snell’s Doctor Who entry, and I’m rather surprised our resident Whovian Josephine Harvatt didn’t beat you to it. A fine selection of characters, but why is the stranded dalek firing its death ray out of its eye socket? I have to say I didn’t recognise Anthony Perkins in dwindt's entry, but closer inspection revealed the keytag reading Bates Motel. The lighting here is remarkable, particularly on his clothing – 3D modelled? But it’s the dagger in the far shadow that really makes this one. Fantastic work. And a remarkable change of viewpoint in the second entry – Topol would be delighted. A trip to the underworld from Frank, and that’s a dark and complex vision of hell. From the thoroughly convincing flames to the variety of tormented souls, this is an extraordinary image: I had no idea you were plagued by such dark thoughts. Still, better out than in. Very fine work, Frank. A somewhat psychedelic entry from Josephine Harvatt, an Eagles tribute that, had it been square, would have made the perfect album cover. It certainly draws you in, though. The more I look at it, the more I see. A major rebuild from Mariner, for whom the hardest job must have been constructing the underside of the stairs going down. It’s hard to see exactly how these work: what happens at the far end? They seem to disappear before meeting the rising stairs. A curious tussle with perspective, Michael! Not sure a bucket of water will be enough to clean this up. |

Re: Challenge 971: Escher's Hotel
Glad you like it. I was a bit pessimistic because I got too caught up in the obvious perspective anomalies
The wall is only a wall. There is no major perspective trick as such except that you can perceive the staircase and cats as looking up from below or down from above. It was far, far too rushed and I didn't really pull it off.
I only had until Monday evening to post anything. So I was quite able to join in but forced to be very rushed. I continued to look in and comment for the rest of the week but had no means to participate beyond this. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
