Re: Challenge 986: Christmas is over
David in answer to your question "Why did I turn the night scene into a daytime one". The answer is as follows: having completed the removal of ALL the Christmas lights, I realised Steve had unintentionally given US two technical challenges: the second one being was to turn night into day.

I had never done anything like that before, and for me it was a NEW challenge; moreover, a challenge I thoroughly enjoyed. I much prefer the daytime scene to the night-time one.

Finally, I thought I would give you a belated Christmas present. I'm sure you'll find a use for it

Well I have to accept that's an interesting, if unintended, interpretation.

Yes. Well, if you accept that you and I agree to differ on your love of the very heavily post processed look, it's been very well done.

Aha! Caught me out being lazy!!

No generative fill was used for the removal of the decorations, just cutting, cloning, copying and a little bit of cursing. However I used it to build the road.

Lovely work everyone and Michael, I do like the silvery look.

Lovely Anna. The opening rain and flooded road are really convincing!

I like the changes of atmosphere and time that follow.

Lovely stuff.

Micheal (Mariner) the extra layer of foreground water with its clean reflections is a really nice addition.

Nice work Michael, and glad to see you're back

I have corrected the march across the square, and now looks much better.

Re: Challenge 986: Christmas is over
First to take down the Christmas decorations this week was michael sinclair, with an image that really set the bar high: an immaculate reconstruction that’s bang on topic. The removal of the reflections the foreground is particularly effective, and turning the night scene into day works better than I would have expected. The Chinese Liberation Army entry is suitably bizarre, with a reflection that works better than I’d have expected. The version with them marching off is fun, although what they’re doing in La Rochelle is anyone’s guess. The rain entry is missing some puddles – ah! There we go! Spot on! With remarkably effective puddles.

A partial decoration removal from DavidMac, with the foreground paving slabs – again – particularly well executed. I agree about recolouring the front of the buildings to remove the white tint, but your argument that the side street is ‘less Christmassy’ fails to convince. The packing up entry more than makes up for it, though, with excellent composition and particularly well judged reflections. I’m a little concerned about the variation in height of the tradesmen, though.

I like a good cheat, and lwc's entry would be ideal were it not for the fact that it’s clearly a London taxi. Even by cab standards going via La Rochelle is something of a detour.

Athletic decoration removal from Ant Snell, with the dangling man breaking all sorts of health and safety rules. A few comments: the reflection man on the left should be the same height as him – reflections are never shortened; the string of dangling lights should really be the same colour as those above (and that regular pattern is a bit confusing). And I’m sure Google would have translated that sign for you.

I enjoyed Frank's subtle entry – lighting up those windows really adds interest to the scene (and I do like the person on the second floor above the handbag). The discarded Christmas tree in the foreground is a nice touch, and turning the side street decoration into a new year banner is a good cheat. Is the shadow of the woman a bit too strong?

A gorgeous dusk image from tooquilos – I see the street has been reopened to traffic. The rain in the animated version is spectacular, and I really like the way the time of day changes (perhaps lights should come on in the upstairs windows as it darkens). Very effective!

Delighted to see Mariner back with us, with an expert reconstruction of the scene. I puzzled over the reflections for some time: if you look at the original image, the paving stones seem to be parallel with the two shops in the centre (check the Cuir de France reflection). In which case, I think your newly-reflected buildings should also follow those paving lines, although I can see why you’ve chosen not to do so. This is something of a conundrum. Added points for reflecting the tops of the buildings, though.

Good work, everyone.

Thanks, Steve, glad to be back. I must admit I completely missed that. It's easily fixed though, but it's too late now.
