Re: Challenge 1020: Gordon's well
Frank I so enjoyed this video. I watched it over a coffee and croissant with my wife asking what the big grin on my face was for. _________________ Whatever you do in life do it with the enthusiasm of a 4-year old in a Batman suit. |

Yes David fun producing along with a few headaches ( a lot of help from U-Tube) trying to figure out how to do things and I agree not happy with shadows. Gordon - glad you enjoyed it - a fun program with lots to discover yet - enjoy your trip.Appears your well has many inhabitants as can be seen by the current entries. |

Re: Challenge 1020: Gordon's well
I may have a go at this one so time next week if I have the time … with an idea that I had when I took the photograph. No other pics from Greece. The only other likely image was a large, old cannon but that was interrupted by a biiiiig thunderstorm so didn’t get the pic. _________________ Why is it that all the contestants in the ‘Miss Universe’ contest are all from Earth? |

Drat...!! I've done it again, uploaded an entry a couple of days ago and then got sidetracked with another idea. Maybe I will remember to post it tomorrow after this one. ![]() |

Thanks Frank. I’ve been nursing that image in my head for the last week. _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

Thanks Gordon. I'm having trouble with Affinity at the moment, so no picture unless I can sort it today. |

Welcome back Michael ![]() The Oklahoma kid entertains very well! It goes something like this: Fairy Godmother says to the crappy well "Would you like to be a classic Athenian well/fountain?" and the crappy well says " yes please" Very late at night so just a quickie. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1020: Gordon's well
First to open Gordon’s well this week was DavidMac, with a trademark garden gnome (albeit one who’s also a paparazzo). Not sure about the dodgy angle of the hand lifting the lid, but I like the building of the interior. Shouldn’t the lid have some thickness? ![]() I haven’t watched KAOS yet, but it’s next on my list (just finished the outstanding season 2 of Sherwood, waiting for Slow Horses to build up a few more episodes). Jeff Goldblum has been expertly tucked behind the well, with perfect lighting and pose. This alone must have taken ages. I like the engravings, but your choice of a cod Grecian font jars somewhat. You know what would have been really cool? If the N of Underworld was right on the edge and the well was recessed in profile at that point. A glorious bit of Bondage, with charming detail – not just the handle on the lid, but the keypad to open the lock. Beautiful. And that’s not even starting on the rebuilt background. I loved the princess and the frog, despite the fact that the princess seems to be hovering above the ground – her body length couldn’t stretch the height of the well. Or maybe she has a concealed stool. Great choice of font, except for the apostrophe… I enjoyed lwc's cat among the pigeons – the blinks really bring it alive, along with the subtle movement of the birds. I like how they’re all looking at the camera. But note my comment about the thickness of the lid, as in David’s entries above. The scary clown is about as scary as clowns always are. Framing the balloon with the front foliage helps it look part of the shot. And how long will it be before the vintage Kilroy entry no longer means anything to anyone? I only know of it because of my parents’ wartime generation, and it was a meme (although it wasn’t called that then) that lingered over into my childhood. A funny Geek Well entry, with its assembly of coders – but wasn’t it possible to find a less wide-angle shot of a geek at a keyboard? Neat idea, though. The firefly entry is spectacular, with lighting that neatly matches the movement of the flies. I don’t quite understand how they’re getting through the hinge gap, though. I like the subtlety of the two hands entry, although I did wait a ridiculously long time for something to move. That’s a startling crocodile, not sure I understand the geometry of the lid. For more realism I’d keep the hands still, though. Just when I thought this week was turning into the David and Loyd show, along comes Frank with his kids’ TV show. It’s both brilliant and nauseating in equal measure, which I imagine was the intention… horrifying to think the whoever makes this software intends it for non-satirical use. Brilliantly done, though, apart from the jarring drop shadows. The giant skeleton is hilarious, especially the way it’s holding the ironwork. Startling to see it leap out as I scrolled down the page – really funny, Frank. A flaming hog roast from Ben Boardman, ingeniously turning the well into a fire pit. There’s a lot to like here: retaining the ironwork as a spit, the glow on the interior, the cigarette in the mouth of the spit turner, the enthusiasm of the participants. Why are the two women in uniform? Am I missing something obvious here? The best thing for me is the shadow of the lid placed against the side of the well, although a tiny amount of adjustment is needed to make it attach to the well and the lid: ![]() Glad to see GKB managed to squeeze in an entry after all, and that’s a very fine Poseidon. A shame you weren’t able to find a statue photographed from above, rather than below, which would have better matched the angle of the well. I like the water splash, and the new background. But – sans serif font around the well? No no no! Those serifs were invented for a reason, and the reason was that they were carved before the thicker strokes of the letters to stop the stone splitting. Sans serif didn’t come until literally two millennia later. An ingenious relocation from Mariner, with the well moved to a desert setting. I like the new rope, and especially the shadow of the man with the bucket and basket. I assume the reduction in scale was so that the man’s hand could be turning the handle? Only the well does seem a little small and low compared with the people. No garish colours from you this week, so admirable self restraint there. Small point: don’t forget to add texture to the inside of the well. Glad to have you back, Michael, you’ve been missed. A curious construction from michael sinclair, featuring a marble fountain that just screams 3D model (just look at how the marble texture runs around the top – marble doesn’t do that). I quite like the water, despite its very low resolution, but why haven’t you tucked it behind the front pillars? |

Thanks Steve. The LH man's hand has to be right next to the handle. Perhaps I made him too tall. I adjusted the horizon to match his eye level. |
