Re: Challenge 1024: Dental pain
First to redecorate the waiting room this week was DavidMac, with a very appealing work in progress. It’s the subtle shadows on the dust sheets that really make this come to life – immaculately done. I enjoyed the Oscar Wilde entry, with his supposed last words. An appealing choice of font, although I’d question the shadow on the wall to the left of Oscar’s arm. You’ve set yourself a real challenge with the glass shelf entry, and it’s beautifully realised: so many tricky reflections and variations on transparency, with complex perspective. I tried to find even the smallest fault and I couldn’t. Excellent. The ball chair entry is glorious, as well as deeply disturbing. Did you assemble the toothy shelving? Or is that a real thing? Artfully replaced wallpaper from lwc, in a particularly bilious shade of green. I can appreciate how tricky this must have been – and it’s my fault for having chosen a wall with so many angles. I like the calming wildlife on the screen, but the wall to the right of the chimney breast should of course be in shadow (look at the chair beneath it). An amusing colour changing version, which is of course bound to make waiting patients feel at ease. A hugely entertaining Dracula entry, with its Halloween pumpkin and Peter Cushing portrait. That wallpaper truly is ghastly – where did you find it? And you even got a moose in there – although the one over the fireplace is unnervingly looking straight at the camera. I like the toothy gorilla. A fine collection of dental oddities from Ben Boardman, featuring a variety of toothsome decoration. Do you think there’s a catalogue somewhere from which dentists can choose these things? The man on the right was indeed the dentist who fitted Freddy’s crown, so you must have scoured their website for these images. Nicely done. Some revamped wallpaper from tooquilos, although I’m not sure it’s much more calming. “Filling Good”, ha ha – and a truly disquieting clock. And the animated version is fantastically unnerving! Did you Google “old man with toothache”? If there’s one thing I find even more upsetting than dentists, it’s spiders – so GKB's arachnid-heavy entry made me squirm. I like the wallpaper concept, but shouldn’t it have some shading to respect the angles of the walls? The new mantlepiece lettering is nicely done. A charmingly rebuilt room from Mariner, with a frosty view that’s a little unexpected for central London. I like the sculpture. The clock could perhaps do with a little perspective distortion – it seems too head-on – and don’t forget to glaze your windows! Incidentally, DavidMac’s photo of a dentist in Morocco reminded me of a dentist I also photographed in Marrakech, back in 2008: ![]() |

Thanks Steve The new background was not actually supposed to be new wallpaper hence no shadow. It’s supposed to be the view if the wall was removed and all that is left is a spider’s web. The blurring is to represent depth of field. I wasn’t happy with my entry but ran out of time again. _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

If it's any consolation Gordon that's exactly the way I read it. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks Steve. "Glaze the windows" - too time consuming. "Distort the clock" - I did, but not enough. |

Re: Challenge 1024: Dental pain
I played with that quite a bit. It presupposes that his arm is projecting forward of the chimney breast. Somehow it looked 'comped' without. I think maybe I could have made it much subtler.
Well now that's praise indeed! Thank you! (I could point out a couple .... but I won't.). I do like your photo. Marrakesh sported a huge number of funky dentistry establishments although I don't recall have seen one on a market stall. I didn't fancy any of them, but the one I eventually went to (my photo) was recommended by a local and proved to be excellent. It doesn't do to confuse basic equipment with ability. I was once treated, years and years ago, by a dentist up country in Jamaica where there was no electricity. He had a foot operated treadle drill. He perched on a high stool which helped stabilise his upper body and arms while one leg was planted firmly on the floor and the other busily pumping away. The bizarre antique apparatus had a big heavy fly wheel, so for really precise delicate work where he needed to be really still, he would pump up a storm and then stop pumping using the built up energy in the flywheel to keep things going for a short period.
They are very disturbing but I had a lot of fun creating them! The shelf is a real thing lifted intact straight out of picture search. If you look closely you can see the perspective is not really a proper match. This was one of the those challenges that I didn't really expect to enjoy ........ and then, to my surprise, did!! Thanks Steve. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
