Oddly, the toughest part of this challenge was cleaning up and rebuilding the stage without all the modern set dressing in Steve's photo.

Yes, that took me quite a while too. That and converting monochrome photos to colour, and rebuilding the picture wall.

Re: Challenge 1036: The Cavern
First to visit the Cavern this week was Ant Snell, with a quartet of ageing rockers refusing to leave the stage – lucky there’s a nurse on hand, and a defibrillator. I like the two audience members with back pain. An inspired entry!

A classical entry from lwc, with not a moose in sight. It’s a convincing piece of work, and the cleverly imagined step in the stage makes sense of George’s pose. No audience for this early incarnation?

Pun time from tooquilos, with a strong coleopterological (look it up) theme. I like all the added foliage, and the yellow submarine peeping in from the side. Great dancing movement in the animated version, and it seems extraordinary that someone out there should have made a dancing beetle just waiting for you to come along and use it. And you had a terrific position for the McCartney gig!

Another beetle pun, this from GKB – with a young Michael Caine at the wheel. Ingenious turning of the stage into a tunnel, although I’m not convinced about the texture of your road surface. I’m sure DavidMac would have something to say about those perspectives… a fun animated version, even dipping the wheels into the water at the bottom of the tunnel. Such fun. But I hope you realise that song will be plaguing me for the whole weekend.

Very entertaining work from michael sinclair, dredging up a double bass player from a previous Challenge. I like the shadow and the ostrich, but your furiously moving sky… that’s not how skies move! And I won’t mention the piano stool.

A beautifully lit entry from dwindt, with perfect alignment on the stage. Are those 3D models? If not, it’s remarkable how well they all fit the space. Excellent job. And the black and white version has a certain authenticity.

I like the degradation of the photo in Frank's atmospheric image, with a highly appropriate audience. The foxing really unifies all the elements, resulting in a very convincing entry.

Late-period Beatles from Mariner, but fitting very neatly onto that stage. Great poses from Paul and John, but it’s George at the piano who impresses me the most. And is that a Bedlam poster peeking out from the side? Very nicely done.

Historical authenticity from DavidMac, putting Pete Best back on drums. An excellent audience, and great poses from the band; but why no cables from the guitars? Is it because they forgot to bring their amplifiers?

Thanks Steve. Cincinnati 1963. This took many hours - I loved it.

Thank you Steve. Lovely entries everyone.
I re-did the stage as everyone else did. I left the symbol and snare shadows on the back wall to line up the drum set I manipulated to fit. I then set about matching the instruments they would have used. Sketchfab has a treasure of free models. Thanks to the able artists there for their kindness. I was able to find a low poly model of the correct guitars and drums, which I manipulated to look similar to The Beatles’ instruments. McCartney’s Hofner, Lennon’s Rickenbacker, Harrison’s Gretsch, Vox amps and the correct drum set, plus a combined stand and authentic mic.
Bottom right are the models posed in 3D. I attempted to get them looking as close to the characters as possible. Top right is all the extra PS touched I had to add to seat them in the scene.
I actually did this image twice. The first time, when I added the step up of the stage, which initially looked flat after I had rendered it with the models in, I realised that both Harrison and Lennon were standing in space as their feet were positioned on the upright of the stage step. I had already dedicated many hours to this image.
When trying to combine 2D and 3D, you’ll encounter many strange situations that the mind cannot imagine when you first set out.
Thanks for the great challenge, Steve, now to learn how to model a sexy robot. That’s my next 3D challenge. Ouch! Don’t do robot but a chance for $2500 says differently…lol
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best.

Oh, even an authentic sign on the left wall, from back then, stipulating a maximum capacity of 217 people allowed inside. You English guys are bad. First night over 600 tickets were sold. 2 thirds of the crowd were denied entrance....lol...and 2 old posters on the right wall.

Let's pretend yes ..........

Amplifiers and cables are all missing from the original photo. But that's no excuse. I really should have thought of that. Pity. The amps could have been another nice period touch.
