Re: Challenge 1047: John Lennon's Piano
I made this Friday and uploaded it when I was in a somewhat ethereal mood. I’ve tried to imagine something better, but so far, have not and have given up. No added friends and such, so a bit off topic. ![]() |

I really like this Loyd. My instant reaction was that the revolving 'god rays' were a bit too much and unnecessary. But when I try and imagine it without them it seems a bit dry. Thanks David, this was about the lighting and metronome... "god rays" seemed to fit and then the dove made sense given the song lyrics. |

Re: Challenge 1047: John Lennon's Piano
First to play the piano this week was Ben Boardman, with Lennon playing to his younger self. I like the way the older (younger?) Beatles are grouped around the piano. John at the keys is too big for that baby grand, though. And shouldn’t Yoko be more engaged in the proceedings? A stripped-back entry from DavidMac, of which the later Lennon would certainly have approved. The wisp of cigarette smoke adds a lot, and the iconic John & Yoko photo makes a good replacement on the wall – and the couple do end up as a surprisingly effective pair of garden gnomes. But what are they holding? I couldn’t make it out, even zoomed in. Oh, I see – it’s whatever they’re holding in the photo on the wall. Still none the wiser. I like the interaction between John and Yoko in Frank's entry, with a terrific pose for Yoko resting on the edge of the piano. A splendid piece of wall art, too, and great that you’ve found a photo of John playing this piano – complete with reflection in the lid! Top job. A nicely colourised entry from michael sinclair, the more muted skin tones fitting much better with the background. And yes, the softer edges work well, although I think this is as much to do with removing the white fringe as with feathering. I like them when they’re smiling – subtle work. A very coherent image all round. A charming entry from Ben Boardman, with the music to Imagine wafting through the room. The bubbles express the sentiment in the song well. Tiny point: flatten out the base of the microphone a bit more. Ah – you’ve fixed the problem by opening the lid! A splendid achievement. An ethereal scene from lwc, with a dove clearly flapping its wings in time to Imagine, even though we can’t hear it. (You might want to try to lose that black fringe, though.) I like the guitar in the metronome. I like how Ant Snell has brought my band Bedlam into the studio, with band photos retrieved from the website. A really good idea, executed in the main really well – but that singer in the middle looks like she’s had plastic surgery… A redecorated studio from Mariner, with a complete makeover: a new carpet and curtains, a new view through the window, and above all the piano turned to face the other way. I’m not sure Yoko would approve of John’s new squeeze, though. And are those handmade clothes as well? Very small point: given the angle of the picture behind John, his reflections should be much further to the left. |

Re: Challenge 1047: John Lennon's Piano
Thanks Steve.
I thought so too, but I wasn't sure, so I just left it. I used to be a big fan of the Beatles, and especially liked John Lennon and his most memorable song Imagine so I loved this Challenge and spent many more hours on it than I normally would. I never liked Yoko, her looks, her singing, or her art work. I thought at the time, and still do, that JL was too good for her. So my picture of Yoko is that of an imposter I found on the net several years ago. You were polite enough not to mention that. |

Although less iconic than the Liebowitz portrait on the wall in my first submission, the photo on the beach is a classic among the photos of the white wedding. They are holding their marriage certificate. I enjoyed this one especially the first. Gently satisfying.
