Interesting Loyd. For the benefit of your non-US viewers would you like to put some names to those faces? |

Sadly .....I need help with some of the characters too. Did you 'caricature' them yourself? The Alfred E Neuman Obama is priceless. I loved Mad magazine when I was a teenager. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1057: Punch and Judy
Thank you both! Aside from the obvious political possibilities, which are especially appropriate since Punch was one of the earliest political satire magazines, (I have bound copies going back to 1866 on my bookshelf here), I was so stuck for an idea for this that I nearly gave it a pass. Just as I was about to give up I heard Ingrid giggling at a rather silly over the top stylist's makeover on Instagram. Suddenly, there was my 'hook'. Give Mr Punch a makeover ........... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1057: Punch and Judy
FYI - Background is Obama’s summer home at Martha’s Vineyard. Left to right: Michelle Obama. Tom Perez, senior advisor to the president and director of White House Intergovernmental Affairs from 2023 to 2025. Chuck Schumer, leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017 and as Senate Majority leader from 2021 to 2025. Nancy Pelosi, 52nd speaker of the US House of Representatives, from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Punch is Joe ‘big guy’ Biden. Judy is Kamala ‘cackles’ Harris. Barack Obama is of course the master puppet manipulator. Caricatures are all internet finds. TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) self-help for dummies book, just for giggles. Considered to be the furthest left of the left-wing radical ‘news’ organizations, and purveyors of mis-information, MSNBC provides their support to the puppet show. |

Interesting. For different sources they are remarkably consistent. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Interesting. For varied sources they are remarkably consistent. I suppose it's a fairly universal style. I just discovered (should have guessed anyway) that there are a quite few online AI caricature makers. Just submit your photo and describe the style and humour you want. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Location... location... location! That Punch and Judy franchise didn't work out very well... ![]() An American Black Vulture fly-by, with tumbleweed and howling coyote. The jackrabbit and roadrunner are not animated. ![]() This one may not look like much, but it was the most satisfying of all to make. |

Thanks Michael and David… getting it to loop as seamlessly as possible was a challenge in itself. |

Steve, before you go all eagle eyed on me, I have just noticed that the selfie on the phone screen should be flipped. It's taken me two days to spot it, so I'm not going to bother to change it, but I'm not going to try and sneak it past you either. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

The world is but a stage. The puppets have escaped the stall and are amongst us...or are we the puppets. Massive storms in Natal this week. Trees and building blown over so have been busy. Some stunning entries everybody. Only had time for craziness. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 1057: Punch and Judy
First to attend the show this week was lwc, moving the action to a charming park. A great array of kids, and the animated fountain, dog and of course puppets brings it to life. Kids could do with some more shadows, though. You’ve slotted the booth into the sepia image perfectly – absolutely faultless. Great job there. And very fine grain matching on the postcard from Halifax, as well as an impressive straightening-out of the perspective. The Victorian version is charming, although more green in the black areas would tie it in better with the background image. A very neatly-wrought political satire, and I greatly prefer the animated version: Michelle Obama’s bobbing head, the shimmering of Biden and Harris… very impressive. And I’m with David in loving Obama as Alfred E Neuman – I too was a big Mad Magazine fan in my youth. The smashed-up tumbleweed version is absolutely beautiful. Subtle animation, a really emotive scene: I really like this one. Could watch it for hours. I seem to have posted this just in time for GKB's political satire, as Musk and Trump come to blows. Very good puppets, the Presidential seal on top is great – but it’s the upside-down flag I like the most. A fine animated version – J D Vance especially makes a great Barbie. I wish I’d seen the original, though. What was so awful that you had to remove it? A fine two-framer from michael sinclair, with a subtle change of expression on Trump between frames. But who’s the other man? Doesn’t look like Musk to me. Should I recognise him? A remarkably well-behaved group of children from Mariner, all seemingly more interested in the show than the horse and foal approaching from the left. If they were real kids, they’d ditch the show at once. But nicely done, although I’m wondering if you have a three-armed professor in that booth. (Punch and Judy operators call themselves professors in the trade.) A bigger and slightly older audience in the town centre version, nestling in there perfectly. I like that you’ve kept the support ropes. And the crocodile! I’d forgotten about the crocodiles. The arrest scene is a brilliant idea, expertly realised: I like how you’ve blended the puppet heads with the police bodies. And great expressions on both Punch and Judy (and of course the unnamed baby). Immaculate setting in the beach scene, the striped booth a perfect match for the existing wind breakers. And so good that you’ve used the arrest scene in there too. I was very taken with Ben Boardman’s view from inside the booth – now that’s thinking inside the box. And good work finding all those puppets from behind. But does your professor (see above) have two and a half pairs of arms? Otherwise it must be getting very crowded in there. Only tooquilos could turn Punch and Judy into a horror movie – but that’s a terrific view, with the abandoned fairground and a seriously spooky clown selling tickets. I like the way it moves in the animated version, and the Water Gun Fun is spectacularly impressive. The ruined merry-go-round is very affecting. Glorious work, Anna! A pink makeover from DavidMac – it’s Barbie gone even more over the top. I’m delighted to see it still isn’t drawing a crowd. The ghastly selfie people are excellent, despite holding the phone the wrong way round, and I like the pink car in the distance. For what it’s worth: kids today do seem still to be amused by traditional shows, surprisingly. Perhaps it’s their version of digital detox? A great reversal image from Ant Snell, with the puppets on the outside and, for the sake of non-UK visitors, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie inside the booth. I like the policeman looking in. And you remembered the sausages! There’s a nightmarish quality to dwindt's entry, certainly lifting it out of the arena of children’s entertainment. I like the action in and around the tent, but the distortion on your angry mob does make them look rather two-dimensional. Excellent work this week. |

Re: Challenge 1057: Punch and Judy
Thanks Steve I posted the second video to include trump in his cartoon tank after he sent the National Guard and Marines onto the streets of Los Angeles. Otherwise the first video was identical. I must say that Punch and Judy generated some really excellent work from everyone _________________ Whatever you do in life do it with the enthusiasm of a 4-year old in a Batman suit. |
