Great and varied entries with some thinking outside the box. I went with the monster theme. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1067: The caged insect
I posted this a while ago and it's disappeared! So I hope I am not inadvertently double posting. First off Loyd that looks like those videos you find on the web of heavy machine operators taking revenge on obstructive or stupid car owners. I could almost believe it! ![]() Frank that's a really great atmosphere! I love the bug eye and head. This time I have sort of followed the monster route in terms of scale but in a more domesticated version. Having found the web site with all the different views of this wee beastie (some of them already cut out) it seemed a shame to let them go to waste. Steve's original is there too of course. BTW they really are called "Hebekrans". Not my finest work, but fun and relaxing to do. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

![]() My apologies to all for making so many, I was flooded with ideas and had to make them, I couldn't bring myself to simply pitch them in the bin. That's it for me. |

They are not as difficult as they look Ben. Just MUCH more time consuming. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1067: The caged insect
Very imaginative results from everyone this week. Especially from Loyd. Still going for the record number of entries Loyd? You have that already. A few years ago Steve told us not to submit more than one entry each week, as he already had his hands full writing critiques for all the artists, who were many. After a while he relaxed that rule, as most of his admirers had disappeared for one reason or another. I find that Steve sets ever more difficult challenges these days. That's OK with me, as half the fun is spent working out what to create, where to find it, and how to create it. |

Re: Challenge 1067: The caged insect
"La Tarentella" is so good on so many levels Michael! First off a clever pun. (Steve likes those.) Then a most ingenious construction with your impeccable clean execution. I can identify some bits from the manufacturer's website, but all sorts of other stuff too. I suspect much of it is your own creation entirely. Then you tie in the music even better by giving your beastie maracas. To top it all, beautifully matched light throughout and nigh on perfect shadows. One of your best Michael. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks David and Loyd. Loyd, your many entries well done and imaginative for sure - loved the bird with the insect and the crab. David , same for yours, imaginative , scorpion and Hebrekans- glad they're caged. Gordon - that's one mean bee - not too happy I assume Ben - that's about it Ant -what Michael said Mariner- nice work, what Loyd said. |

Re: Challenge 1067: The caged insect
Loyd, Frank, thank you. David, very high praise. This was a difficult one, wasn't it? From the start I decided that I would avoid the monsters, but what else could I do? First I added two pincers and some extra legs and made it into a crab, but that didn't look right. So I found some metal arms on the net and made it look more like a spider. Then I vaguely remembered that the dance "La Tarantella" is about recovering from a spider bite by dancing madly for a long time. So, musicians were needed, and a dancer. The musicians were easy enough to find but the dancer would have blocked the view, so I left her out. The background scenery was fun. It took several hours to find the spot where Stve took the photograph, but it was worth it. It's very close to Cologne cathedral and the river Rhine. I have visited several cities in Germany but never Cologne, so I envy Steve his trip to what looks like a beautiful city. I wonder if he brought any Eau de Cologne back with him. |

Re: Challenge 1067: The caged insect
First to free the insect this week was lwc, neatly placing it on an alien landscape. Great atmosphere and shooting stars. I like the aliens, too, but why aren’t they wearing any clothes? The still from Them is very nicely put together, the insect perfectly matching the tone and grain of the original. Most impressive. The dinosaur entry is excellent, I like the slight nodding and the drifting mist. The leaping dinosaur at the back is fun. The London entry is beautifully composed, with all the elements blending together perfectly. Although I have to point out we haven’t had fog since the 1960s. The starling entry very neatly cuts the scale down! Great lighting in the night time entry – the moths especially bring it to life. I like the underwater entry, too, with its attendant sharks. Although if there were only one at a time, it would appear to be circling. The elephant doesn’t seem at all bothered by the African entry! An interesting web from GKB, although the insect should of course be revolved 90 degrees in order to sit on it. I like the animated version – Is the bee pulling the hook up and down, or is that the insect toying with it? Very fine flapping wings and sound. A touch of politics from Ben Boardman, the Alaska summit now moved to central Cologne and neatly placed in front of the cathedral. Those living statues do get everywhere! Good work on the shadows. Interestingly, I was at Photokina in Cologne in 2012 or thereabouts, as part of a press trip organised by Wacom. I enjoyed Ant Snell’s War of the Worlds, with the insect neatly extended to make one of the tripods. Perfectly assembled! I hate the mishmash of typography but that’s hardly your fault. A perfectly judged biology class from DavidMac, with the insect about to be speared. The earwig is disturbing – and would be more so if it were wriggling. A splendid zoo entry – I can see why having found all those cutouts you had no option but to use them. How very generous of Messrs Hebekrans & Co. An alien rampage from Frank, with a great set of expressions on all the faces. I like the eyes on the insect! And great lighting. Very coherent image. I laughed out loud at Mariner's maracca-wielding spider, with its googly eyes and goofy grin. Splendid! Such a different approach. And to answer your question: of course, I got Carol a bottle of eau de cologne at the airport. How could I resist? |

Thanks Steve. I would have really liked to rotate the crane to fit the web. I even did a brief search for a 3D model. As it is the web was distorted to try to make it work better but … Some great imagination from everyone, particularly Michael’s Googly-eyed crab _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |
