Re: Challenge 1068: The Andromeda Conundrum
As we seem to be going with the 'andromeda" theme and Greek mythology.

Andromeda is the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, king and queen of the kingdom of Aethiopia. Her mother Cassiopeia foolishly boasts that she is more beautiful than the Nereids, a display of hubris by a human that is unacceptable to the gods. To punish the queen for her arrogance, Poseidon floods the kingdom's coast and sends a sea monster named Cetus to ravage its inhabitants. In desperation, King Cepheus consults the oracle of Ammon, who announces that no respite can be found until the king sacrifices his daughter, Andromeda, to the monster. She is thus chained to a rock in Jaffa by the sea to await her death. Perseus is just then flying near the coast of Aethiopia on Pegasus the winged horse, having slain the Gorgon Medusa and carrying her severed head, which instantly petrifies any who look at it. Upon seeing Andromeda bound to the rock, Perseus falls in love with her, and he secures Cepheus's promise of her hand in marriage if he can save her. Perseus kills the monster with the Medusa's head, saving Andromeda.

Painting by Giuseppe Cesari (1568–1640)

Re: Challenge 1068: The Andromeda Conundrum
I am delighted to see this has attracted some very varied and entertaining entries. Lots of fun!

When I sent this to Steve I knew nothing about it. I simply saw this statuette in the window of an Asian games and manga store just down the road from where I live and wondered who would pay an eye watering 800€ for it. It was only later that I researched and discovered he is a well know manga character called Andromeda Shun, but I suspect you have all discovered that for yourselves already.

Shun is a pacifist but when forced, on exceptional occasions, is proficient and deadly in combat. Here he is in combat with Unicorn Jabu who he defeated in the Galaxian Tournament.

So that's the blurb. Simple truth is I have no time and needed to do something quick and simple. So I simply set out to give my photo a more typical manga perspective and energy. With the exception of the rebuilt arm and leg it he is still entirely my original photo.

Ben, taking the figure apart is extremely clever and well done. Loyd, I laughed at Free Willy.

I've been exposed (subjected?) to Anime art through my granddaughters but have not come across this particular character. The price tag terrifies me, so I won't be showing them

Ha ha ha ha .......

Is it my imagination or are there really evil faces in the tree bark?

Seeing faces in abstract patterns like clouds or, in this case, tree bark is called pareidolia and is an important part of our unconscious survival mechanism. The need to recognise faces is so dominant that it can impose itself on situations where there are none and will persist even when we know this (the inability to 'un-see').

So now you have a new word to baffle your friends with ....... or, as grammer purists would have it, "with which to baffle your friends".

Does anybody ever really say that ?????

Re: Challenge 1068: The Andromeda Conundrum
Thank you everyone for your entertaining and sometimes unexpected responses to Andromeda. I knew you'd all come up with fun ideas but I'm delighted to see so many surprises.

I'm not going to make any more individual comments I'm leaving that to Steve.

Pity that by chance this fell in a week when I had no time to participate properly myself. It's quite hard to Photoshop with two toddlers randomly banging the keyboard and wanting to scribble with the pen ......... I'd forgotten how full time and exhausting they can be.
