Re: Challenge 1124: Finish the mural
Been offline for a while. They've been re-cabling our building (large and very complex mix of shops, offices and a couple of apartments on top) for fibre. Started up again yesterday. Because of modem change I had to spend quite a lot of yesterday re-connecting and re-configuring my own LAN and WiFi in my apartment. Now it's done and I've gone straight from pedal car to Ferrari!
Strangely in practical terms it really doesn't make much difference except for large file transfers and some streaming. The fact that a page that previously took a quarter second to load now loads in a hundredth may be a huge leap numerically but makes precious little difference subjectively. Mind you, if I want to get really excited, I could pay a premium price and get three times as fast!! ................ Wow! I could bring that hundredth of a second wait down to a three hundredth!! Now that really would be something! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

[Amended] David, although I don't use any but the built-in AI of Affinity Photo I could not help but be impressed by your entries. Well done! |

Re: Challenge 1124: Finish the mural
First to paint the wall this week was Ben Boardman, with a Mediterranean view that echoes the pencil shapes in the original. I assume this is AI? Not that it detracts. That’s a very photographic seagull. The staircase image is glorious, combining Escher-like perspective tricks with an almost plausible scene. Bringing the steps outside the frame works astonishingly well: I think it’s the shadow that really does the job here. And I like how you’ve extended the scene so the original is still visible on the right. The reconstruction of the original drawing is attractive, and I particularly like how you’ve moved the artist back to examine her work. A magnificently reconfigured anatomy. I enjoyed DavidMac's painting by numbers, and I’d been wondering how you strengthened those faint pencil lines: amazing, really, that AI was able to see them. I like your row of coloured paint jars. That’s a very discreet Monsieur Hulot, standing in an extremely oddly shaped apartment building. That staircase behind him is very curious. Your Out of bounds image is truly dramatic! I like the way the tiger becomes real as it emerges, and that’s an ingenious distortion of the woman’s legs. If I’m going to be picky, you should lose the outlines on the drawn tiger – none of the background plants have them. An extremely small entry from Ant Snell, but indeed I do recognise that as the mural I painted about 40 minutes inland from La Rochelle a few years ago. Ingenious! And good to see the larger version, although now I can see that while it’s clearly based on my mural, it’s been redrawn. What’s it doing bottom left? And – yes, you’ve saved me the trouble of posting the finished artwork! An animated hoarding from lwc, with multiple views. Now shouldn’t those rotate like advertising posters? The Halloween pumpkins are cute. I like the dabbing hand. The sunflowers image is bright and colourful, and I like the extra ladder. But with all these images, shouldn’t the paintings be unfinished? Those are some angry pumpkins! And who has deconstructed Andy Warhol? I was absolutely blown away by dwindt's astonishing approach to this Challenge. The wooden pieces have been removed with extraordinary skill, revealing the recessed spaces and wood beneath; the pegs that hold them even have shadows; and there’s the pile on the ground, and in the box, waiting to be added. But it’s the inspiration that really knocks me out. What an imaginative approach! A complex concept from GKB, whose caveman (why do they always wear leopardskin?) is touching up his Lascaux artwork. I like the rock background – can’t quite work out what he’s holding in his brush hand. Is he undoing the work now he has an assistant? Good to see Frank back after an absence, with a very colourful patchwork image. I like the added onlookers, and there new wooden frame. Always good to see the HotChiPs title, but it really needs some perspective distortion in that position! An entertaining image from Mariner, with its large scale map of the surrounding area. I was amused by Vous êtes içi, as the background view of the Tour de la Chaine appears to have been taken from somewhere in the ocean (although actually, the harbour extends round that side). Your tennis-playing onlookers are rather odd: the man has a bizarre physique, and the woman’s head is at a rather uncomfortable angle. Have you been playing Dr Frankenstein again? As Mariner said – excellent work this week, many truly inspired entries. Re: Challenge 1124: Finish the mural
Steve, I loved this week's Challenge and stretched it out as long as I could. The two tennis players were very difficult to create, and getting them to look at each other was not reasy. Except for the built-in AI which PS and Affinity use I have not bothered with more advanced and dodgy stuff and so was unable to extract the faded lines as David did so well. I disliked the theme of the picture. I mean, what artist would ever paint on a gappy wooden fence if they could find a nearby brick wall? It makes no sense. I thought you might like my picture of La Rochelle, so this one's for you. |

Thank you, Steve. You gave me such praise; I should keep it purely PS more often....I'm loving the die-hards gradual use of ai more and more....lol! _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Thank you Steve. Yes a bit of AI for the art work. I retrieved the pencil sketch using Threshold. A lot of Photoshop also used. |
