Re: Contest 61: Modding mania
It cost me $50USD to fill up my van with gas, so my idea is to modify the van to be gas-economical. ![]() |

Re: Contest 61: Modding mania
A really great selection of entries this week - looks like this one really touched the spot. Who'd have thought that old yellow van could have sparked off so much interest? Glen kicked things off with a really funny dig at ajftv - great job, Glen. Perspective just right on all the text and logos, except for that row of smileys right at the bottom (but I'm prepared to overlook that for now). Is that Leslie Nielsen driving the van? Really like the way you've got the guy's arm sticking out over the door, but if you're going to do this you really need to take out the window divider still visible above it - otherwise, he's punching through the quarterlight! Four entries from ajftv this week, whose idea it was in the first place. Of the four, I really think the first is by far the best: a really fine custom job, and the modifications to the wheels, air scoop and headlights really make this work well. Only slight problem is that each time this van turns a corner it'll shred its tyres on the wheel arches! One thing interests me: you say in another post that you've "only done Photoshop for just over a week now". Is this true? If so, what were you using before? I don't usually pick out a "winner" as such, but the best job of the week, I feel, has to be uk2usadaz's entry. A really stunning piece of work, with a huge amount of detail: the new headlights, radiator, wheels, ait intakes and other details really make this old jalopy sparkle - and the custom paint job looks just perfect. It's one thing to assemble all these ingredients, and quite another to make them fit the angle so seamlessly. Well done, daz, you're really excelled here. After that fine piece of work, MJ's entry really cracked me up. I don't know how much of this is based on the original vehicle, and how much is drawn from other sources, but what a great idea! Some really good detailing in there. But check out the section in the book on layer masks - you'll find that using a brush set to Dissolve really works a treat on sand! Changing the background setting usually means a nightmare in terms of getting the reflections right, but Dezolat0r really explores this area fully. Not just on the side panels, but the windscreen as well! If I was to make a criticism, I'd point out that the reflections on the front should be angled more than the side, and perhaps distorted slightly by the curve of the glass and metal. But overall a really great attempt at an almost impossible job. Love the flare on the headlights, too - a nice touch. And the wheel spin in the later entries is great. But as has been pointed out, remember the details like the Ford logo! Really like the new avatar, by the way. There's so much detail in this week's entry from rufus that it's hard to know where to start! The dirty For Sale sign in the window, the pieces of tape holding the posters to the glass, the faded lettering on the side panels, the creasing on the front and back, the cracked glass in the headlight, the wires holding the light into the socket, the rivets at the bottom, the miscoloured door, the falling registration plate, and above all the wheel skids - altogether, a fantastic piece of work. You've really excelled here, rufus! And it's enough to earn you a title, after just two forum posts: Destructive Demon, I think, best sums up your prodigious talents. A really great job! We're used to a bit of gloom in Atomicfog's entries, and we've certainly got that this week. This one really needs a background to work well, though: that stark white throws it out of balance. Too busy to stick in an urban scene behind? You really should stay in more. Great to see Tabitha back after a long break. Beautiful wheels, and I really like the custom glass and paint job! The setting works really well - just one or two perspective issues, but nothing too serious. But not a cat in sight! Have you forgotten your feline friends? The blue and yellow theme works well in Russ Davey's entry, matching Sven's citizenship - and I do like that lens flare on the headlight. Is the lettering a little too straight, do you think? And with this perspective, you really need to make the front football bigger than those behind it! I'm sure the Horsforth Fairweather FC should mean something to me, but it escapes me for the moment. Is there a football reference I should be getting? And, surprise surprise, another entry from MJ - a really great hybrid! That truck looks so convincing I'm sure it won't be long before Ford start making them. But - whoops! What's going on with those shadows? Clone them all out, and draw your own! It's always good to see an object really fitting into a background, and CWBasset has given us a fantastic rally shot. The sprays of mud are just perfect, and there's a great sense of motion in the van as well. What on earth is that driving, though? Looks like a slimmed-down Jabba the Hut, or perhaps the baby from Eraserhead… Great work, Chris, and congratulations on your restraint in not including any basset hounds. Oh, unless that's what's driving the van… Great blending from Roy, with the Martian mud flying around really convincingly. The glass effect works really well in front of Glen's Martian, and there's a sense of drama here that could only be achieved with Image Warp - looks like you've got CS2, Roy, and you're certainly making full use of it. I'd have put a slightly more opaque piece of glass behind that side window, though - otherwise, a perfect job. And talking of CS2 and Image Warp, it's clear Neal's been experimenting with the feature. that's a really cool van, and your modifications make it look like a great convincing vehicle. I especially like the shortened front end - all that glass area really makes this one work well! But do we need to see a hint of another wheel on the far side? Really fantastic work all round this week - and thanks again to ajftv for coming up with the idea that's inspired so many of you. Keep those Challenge ideas coming! |

Wow! I got a title. I'm not sure that I deserve it but I am really chuffed. Steve's book has been a real inspiration and I have thouroughly enjoyed taking up the challenge even though my learning curve has been almost vertical. My particular favourites this week are those by Glen, MJ and Neil, really excellent stuff. Looking at the next one, I was going to blow the box up but perhaps I should rethink that as I don't want to become typecast. Rufus |

Re: Contest 61: Modding mania
Steve, I'm crushed. 25 years of breeding champion basset hounds down the drain! Of course, I am not near as offended as "Macho" would have been if he was still around. I have included an original picture of him in his honor. Note: As we are in the U.S., he was actually just along for the ride. Above all, thank you for the nice coments. I will obvioulsy need to work harder to make my "kids" more recognizable. Chris

I wish I could have done this challenge in CS2, but I'm like a old car stuck in first gear. I still use PS 5.0. I did the redesign with out any Image Warp (it's not available in my antique program), just old fashion cut and paste. Thank you for the wonder comments. Regards, Dinosaur |

I Wasn't using anything before, apart from drawing in paint and one lesson at school where we made making shapes, in which we used Paint Shop Pro. _________________ -Lexus(A.K.A. ajftv the Legendary Forum Looter) |
