Pauline, just post your reply and attach the file using the shortcut to the left (>>Attachment). Just make sure the file size isn't biggar than 100k. Safest size usually is around 80k.

Re: Contest 79: Bring him to life
well now that I've had my nice new shiny book for just about a week (no coffee stains on the pages yet...give that another 2weeks lol ).... I whizzed to chapter 8 of the book to do this pic... wut a fantastic chapter for making people look real or different I went with Steve's idea in the.... "It's All In The Eyes" section of chapter 8 and changed his eyes to make him look more alive.... almost all of chapter 8 was used to create this pic anyway... here's the result.....

I agree Dalton, Chapter 8 did it for me too. I couldn't bring him to life until I remembered that bit. Now I've had a rethink and my man is definitely a Roman with a few more tweaks...

Another attempt. Am I to use the picture from my documents rather than image shack? Do they upload to this site then? I'm confused??

Well then, it seems I've got it. I was just trying to do things the hard way!!!

It has been way to long since I had the time to participate. Here is just a "quickie" before I go back to my cluttered desk.

I really cheated on this week's challenge; so much so that I will wait until after Steve's comments to post mine.

Re: Contest 79: Bring him to life
Well, I warned you this one was difficult! Great to see so many entries, and so many different approaches to the same subject.

MJ got in first, with a good stab at the skin tone. Darkening the shawl and lightening the shirt works well, but I do feel the eyes and hair have been left rather monochromatic!

A great moody entry from Dek_101, with some subtle skintones and piercing blue eyes. I like the extra shading, but feel his lips and cheeks are perhaps rather bloodless. Fantastic translucent lighting on top of the head, though!

I didn't know they fitted stained glass windows inside nuclear reactors - unless mguyer has found a particularly funky church I don't know about. Good skin toning, some great colour in the face and mouth, and I do like the milkiness of the eyes. He's a little washed out overall, though, especially against that dazzling red clothing (watch your saturation there!). I'd duplicate him, desaturate and change the mode to Hard Light to bump up his contrast. A fascinating second entry, too - although I think you need to talk to Mrs Mguyer for tips on makeup and hair, Martin!

When I first saw Paul 2005's entry I couldn't see what was done. Just about to scroll down when I thought I saw a movement... this is a great, subtle piece of work, and it deserves to be watched through to the end! And the second entry is a nice idea - but he needs more saturation to match the other Last of the Summer Wine characters.

An excellent entry from mikewheatie, with subtle shading, good texture and an appropriate background. The edges are a little soft, though, and I'm concerned about the greyness of the middle of his face - but overall, this one has a very consistent feel to it, and really feels like a finished image. Good stuff!

A great first entry from Slim, with some good detail: the broken barn background, the torn clothing, the matching range of colours. Unless this chap''s been caught in the middle of shaving, however, you seem to have a problem with your brush mode. Set the brush to Color to add beard tone, set on Normal it will just paint on top. By the way, you seem to have been working on the low res version: there's a high res that's linked to, each week, in the introduction to the Challenge, which is better. Welcome to the forum!

Some good shading from mr.pbody, but perhaps too subtle for its own good: I like his green eyes, but would want more variation in the skin. And have you saved this as a dithered GIF file? Shame on you! JPEGs rule the roost here!

Eggbox's old Greek sailor certainly looks the part - I particularly like the faraway look in his eyes. Some more colour in his face would have helped though - and his clothes are far too saturated! This is something that crops up a lot, and you all really need to keep it in check. Um... not sure about the ancient sailing vessel in the background... Second entry is much better tonally, and I do like the added laurel leaves. Are they, perhaps, just too photorealistic for the rest of the image?

A beautiful piece of work from Stefan, with a really ethereal quality. Is that flying pyramid giving him jaundice, though? Still, I like the added texture: it's nearly skin, but not quite. Perhaps reducing the scale slightly would help this one?

Kenney may not have intended the over-exposed look, but it does make for a very striking image. Good toning throughout, with some very subtle shading, and I like the texture on the clothes. Nice one. I like the second entry, too, although his sunglasses do appear to be sinking into his skin. Good hair treatment here!

Whaler has given us the most realistic person so far, with real hair and a great fur collar. The irises are perhaps a bit too large for the eye space, but I do like the milky quality they have. And you're the first person to darken the inside of the nostrils, too. Great job!

There's a fine consistency to Atomicfog's entry, with fantastic colouring and added shadow that really makes this one work well. It's beautifully stylized, with exactly the sort of moody quality we've come to expect from his entries. Thoroughly good job!

An interesting observation from Glen, with a completely different take on the problem. The hand matches the statue perfectly - great job! Now, about those skintones...

Adding lighting can be tricky, as chris discovered. But his Greek has a good feel to it, and the extra details work well. Just one thing: where's the shadow of the torch coming from?

A fantastic job from Neal, with a truly convincing sense of realism. The skintones are just right, the eyes work well, and the hair looks perfect. Looks like an untrustworthy politician. But then, is there any other kind?

More striking realism - and a completely different approach - from DaltonX. Excellent toning, great hair, a really professional job altogether. Faultless! And, certainly, deserving of a title. Hmm, let me think... I think Raster Reanimator best sums up this image. Well done, DaltonX!

I really laughed out loud at Tom's entry. What fantastic hair! And the skin has been beautifully coloured. The gold fabric texture works a treat, as well. Altogether, this is a lovely job. Time for the second title of the week, I feel: and it just has to be Texture Technologist seems appropriate. Excellent!

Great work from Storm, who's given us a good amount of skin colouring, with subtly shifted eyes. A very consistent feel overall, particularly with the muted tones of the clothing. But... no hair? I', sure that would help here!

Glad Pauline finally managed to get her post in! And it's a good job, with some neat touches such as the redness around the inside of the eyes, and the rosy glow on the nose and cheeks. Given the prevailing lighting on the figure, though, I'd say the shadow's on the wrong side. Just a small point!

What a wistful view CWBasset has conjured up! The body pose suits the expression on his face perfectly, and the colouring is spot on. but what's that nasty smudge on his face? Has he contracted some horrible disease? The loss of one sandal does bring other Greek myths to mind, as well...

A fair stab at the problem from finchy - but remember, use Reply rather than Post New Topic to make sure your post shows up in the right place. Some more colour needed in the face, but the treatment of the eyes works well here.

A truly scary entry from bobbyJo. Is there anything left of the original statue here? There's something deeply weird about this one. Not someone I'd buy a used car from!

A refreshingly different approach from jwhite, who's Hulked our statue to great effect. Nice job! But we could have done with deeper texture on the face, perhaps.

Postscript

A lot of you seem to have had real difficulty this week, and although it's a tricky job it isn't impossible. I had a go at this one myself to show you how it's done, and although the realism would have been greatly enhanced with the addition of different clothing and a background, I thought I'd stick to the basic image so you could see one way, at least, to make the whole thing work.

Here's the method:

And here's the finished image:
