Re: Contest 103: Independence Day
Plenty of invention this week! First on the White House lawn was Pierre, with a Canadian takeover of the US government. The flag looks particularly good, and I do like the beavers (especially one the one staring at us) - but best of all here is the way the Olympic stadium slots so neatly behind those trees. And, er, is that a Mini I see nestling at the foot of the steps? A beautiful piece of work from mguyer, who's once again added himself Hitchcock-style to the back of the line. I don't know this monument, but I'm impressed by what I can see of it here. The side has been well made, but there's a small problem with the shadow: the shadow of the top edge of the monument should be parallel to the monument, of course. Otherwise, great job! And the second entry has a great firework - but remember, if it's night time you need much more blue in the building. I've always been a fan of Tom's feel for texture, and the destruction here matches the fireworks perfectly. I love the huge moon in the background, it has a real sense of brooding presence. Not entirely sure about the glow on the spaceships, though - too strong, perhaps? Another new member this week - and lazlo's entry is a great one. The party on the lawnis in great perspective, and the out-of-focus Bush gives the scene a real sense of distance. Excellent work, lazlo - and welcome to the forum! Bush crops up again in Dave's montage, this time as the hapless waiter from Barcelona. Hmm... there was a tradition in the opening credits to rearrange the letters on the Fawlty Towers sign each time. Surely there must be an appropriate anagram someone can come up with? A fascinating entry from bi-liter, with a really energetic vortex and views of key world landmarks. Like looking through the barrel of a gun, you say. Perhaps you should take those psychedelic glasses off next time you go hunting? Raffy's got the animation bug again - with a flag rising along with her favourite moggy behind the White House. It works well, but remember you can vary the time for which each frame is displayed! A small pause in the middle, perhaps, with a longer one at the end, would add some more drama to this piece. A fantastic job from Deborah Morley, who has added a 19th century party to the lawn - complete with appropriate flag waving on the roof. Best of all is the way she's toned down the background image to match the feel of the people: a really consistent, accomplished piece of work. Terrific. Plenty going on in Whaler's post! Armoured cars, Ronald McDonald, an aerial flypast and Donald Rumsfeld cutting a cake (or is it prising open a coffin?). Excellent perspective here - except, perhaps, for the planes, which are all a little too parallel. If the vapour tails were tapering towards the back, we'd get a better sense of them coming towards us. A very explosive entry from Neal, with ol' George W celebrating as the White House explodes behind him. This is a great explosion - even better than the fireworks I generally use. Where did you get it from? I want a copy! An inspired entry from Michael Sinclair: the bridge of the ship perfectly replaces the original bow front on the White House. Very neat! I like the waves, and the fact that the ship is just launching into the water. But - watch the distortion on your text! And if you're going to use speech bubbles, make them fit all the text! Another new member this week - and a great first entry, from funkyjalla. The completely flattened building is perfectly shown by the Pythonesque foot and the dust cloud (although I'm not sure there should be quite so much yellow in there). The way the new sky and the background elements have been slotted in behind the trees is a great touch. Welcome to the forum! I like the subtlety of the flag on Wayne's lawn, and the effectiveness of the night view - particularly the way the pillars have been painted in patriotic colours. Great fireworks, a good glow on the windows, and a good expression on Bush's face. Not sure brightening the White House in the second entry is that much of an improvement: it makes it look more like day time. Memo to self: let's do another day-for-night Friday Challenge soon. Very fine work from Dave, who's given us a Saddam's-eye view of what he'd do to the White House if he had the chance. That onion dome does look rather fetching, doesn't it. And the contrast between the now and then versions of Saddam work really well. Top job. A dazzling piece of work from Bob, with Dubya casting his hook on a flooded lawn. You've really mastered the Flood plug-in there: and the pose, expression and skill of the cutout for Bush are just perfect. I think this is one of your best yet - great composition, expert rendition, and a really good idea to start with. Well done, Bob, you've excelled again. A wonderful animation from eyal fitoussi - swooping space ships, fireworks, a floating neon sign and a bouncing White House. There are several things to love about this piece. One is the drama of the scene: the fireworks don't just flash on and off but fade into view, the ship in the foreground bounces around in a convincing manner (and it's a great Mini conversion, too). Most importantly, there's no obvious beginning and end; it's a seamless loop that just keeps playing. A fantastic effort - and certainly worth a title for you, Eyal. I think Ace Animator seems appropriate! |

Re: Contest 103: Independence Day
Steve... you know bi... my twin brother... he did have a rough time through the '70's... too much earl grey, I think. What he was trying to relate in the blinding green was the view from the alien ship (independence day) the moment it began firing on the white house... at least that's what I was able to decipher! I'll do my best to keep him away from photoshopping anything next time! ![]() _________________ Drawing attention to what otherwise might be overlooked... emphasizing things that matter. |

Re: Contest 103: Independence Day
I'd like to point out that the clown is not Ronald McDonald, rather the clown you find where you enter this forum from the HTCIP book site. I'm glad you think I managed the perspective quite well, Steve, as this is something you always point out. The airplanes are maybe different matter because the vapour trails always plumes out in the distance, This could also be a size problem, maybe I should've made the planes smaller. _________________ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Thanks Steve. I love when somebody refers to one my PS projects as beautiful. My daughter took the original picture of the wall so that I could get into line (que?) with the rest. On the actual monument the door is closed...I opened to show how ordinary people have acsess to the White HOuse ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thank you for the feedback. The yellow dustcloud is a bit on the yellow side, I agree, but it's a nuclear blast, so I guess it's a bit yellow ![]() All set for the 104 now! _________________ I'll never know if it was worth the pain, but I still loved it more than anything in the world - it was my life... |
