Re: Contest 215: The car pool
Hi Becky. Its good to see a 'Maiden montage' again. There is no rust evident in your latest. I have been at other things but lurk regularly and see some truly amazing and inspiring work here. I'm looking forward to receiving Steve's new book soon and seeing CS4 next week!!! Is there a HTCIP4 on its way Steve? Ted |

Re: Contest 215: The car pool
It's a measure of the skill of Forum members that none of you had any difficulty half-submerging this car: you all knew how to go about it, and the only issue was adding finesse. I didn't mention it before, but I'm including this Challenge as a tutorial in the next edition of the book (and yes, Gordon, it will be about CS4!). So you can expect to see all these entries reproduced there, along with those from a couple of Challenges earlier this year. First to dunk the vehicle was GKB, with a good rippling effect beneath the surface and a neat line of foam at the edge. I'd like to have seen the water level following the contour around that headlamp a little more, though. I like the angle of Babybiker's treatment, and the added shadow beneath gives the car a greater sense of presence. Is the rippling a little too tight, though, for the ripples on the surface? A new member this week - and The Mad Lep has not only produced a convincingly submerged car (I really like the wavy water surface on the side), but added ducks - and, best of all, the couple in the background bemoaning their loss. Just a couple of observations: the car's a little small, given the perspective of the scene and its position in the water; and that duck flapping its wings could really do with a little turbulence beneath it. But it's a great first entry - and the second entry is hilarious. Welcome to the forum, Celia! Plenty of action from Josephine Harvatt as her car plunges into the water - complete with motion blur for added movement. The shadow is a particularly nice touch, and very well achieved. But shouldn't some of the spray be in front of the car? I think if it were partly obscured by spraying water we'd get a much stronger sense of it striking the surface. Splendid splashes from Ben Mills, with a huge amount of foaming water - this car's clearly dropped from a height. The driver's a nice touch, but it's the L plate that really makes this one. Interesting work from srowden, and yes, you're right - the shadow isn't quite right. Partly, it's to dark compared to the car. I see you've tried to remedy this by painting the wheels back in, but then why are the wheels more opaque than the body of the car? I like the figure, but he's a little small, wouldn't you say? The bottom of mguyer's car is certainly beneath the surface - but that straight line dividing above from below gives little indication of the contour of the vehicle. A cute pigeon, though! And I'm glad to see you weren't tempted to put Sheila in this one... An ingenious approach from Paul 2007 - drain the pool! Beautifully accomplished, with a rather classy 3D effect on the tiles. My only quibble here is with the perspective on the car, which doesn't match the angle of view of the pool - but then, as we can't float it, it's going to be difficult to get this right. Plenty of fun in vibeke's entry, and I love the idea of the kids taking the car for a ride. There's something a little too celestial about that main splash, though: a lot of water drops, but we need more of a whoosh. Parents? I blame the grandparents... A river of blood from Eva Roth - or is it just a pool of Cinzano? Either way, I wouldn't swim in it. I'm not sure the soft edge of the water really helps: water doesn't fade away, it makes a crisp line! A fantastic animation from tooquilos, with the car plunging into the pool and its driver flying out. There's just so much added detail in this one: the multiple arm and leg positions of the driver, the expanding splash, the rippling of the water's surface (and the growing ripple when the car sinks), the deforming lilo that she lands on... what a great piece of work! One of the best, Anna. I really enjoyed Nick Curtain's night-time view: the car has an animal quality to it, with its headlamps just above the surface. Very good lighting in the restaurant, too, and I'm glad to see you've painted in the windshield. Good work, Nick. Not just one, but two sunken cars from gaoxiguo. I like the fact that the one in the background is upside down. The swimmers don't seem very interested, though! A rather beautifully drawn hovercraft skirt from dave.cox - an elegant solution to the problem. But shouldn't the resulting blast of downward air be producing some kind of turbulence on the water surface? A great splash from brewell, perfectly cut out and dded to this image. It all seems to be some distance in front of the car, though: should it perhaps move a little to the right? and what are the two people in the back looking up and pointing at, that's so much more interesting than a car in a swimming pool??? Pink is a much better pool colour - at least, so Andy L thinks. A good ripple effect, but I wonder if the bottom (top) of the near wheel shouldn't be poking through the surface. I like the turbulent edge to the water on this one. A guest appearance from John Travolta in katew's entry - and, after all, why not. The straight line of the water's surface is a little distracting: I'd like to see it bending around the contours of the car a little more, especially up the side: if the car is level enough to dance on, then we should be able to see about the same amount of both wheels. A neat animation from michael sinclair, with a tropical setting for the car - and a nice respray, too. I like the water lapping against the shore here, showing some clever shadow work. But with the car so far in the distance, we're left with a perspective that's too strong: that needs to be sorted out! A wonderful underwater scene from mariong, with just the right amount of rippling to be convincing. Some great detail here, too: the stream of bubbles from the swimmer's mouth, the splash of the diver both above and below the surface... this is really accomplished work, Marion, resulting in a beautiful image. Fantastic. Great water action from james, with the car leaping out from behind a pillar before submerging. Although the couple in the car are funny, it's the background detail that really cracks me up: the gestures of the girl in the bikini, the waiter dropping his tray of champagne, the jiggling camera in the foreground. What fun! A beautiful night scene from Ellen, with a real sense of moonlight on the water's surface that's beautifully achieved. Great lighting in the background, too. The only thing I'd change here is the rather soft edge of the water around the car: water just doesn't do that. Keep it crisp! A great bit of submerging from maiden, who we haven't seen here in a while. I like the bubbles on this one, and the blue tinting: a neatly divided upper/lower surface, too. The only issue here is with the car's perspective, which is at odds with the background: changing the angle would have helped this one. Good to see you back, Becky. Our second new member this week is Gerard, with an operatic assembly - there's a lot going on here! The woman with the snakeskin skin complaint appears to be modelled in Poser, is that right? Great reflections, a good amount of surface rippling, and a good choice of dripping typography. Welcome to the forum, Gerard! A rather charming romantic scene from Deborah Morley - is that stork waiting expectantly? Most of the work here went on the car, of course, which has a changed perspective to fit the scene better. Also, Deborah's opened the door - and changed the shading to match. Subtle work! A very classy job. Good work all round. They'll make a good addition to the book. |

Re: Contest 215: The car pool
Thanks Steve I really enjoyed this challenge, but the difficult element was deciding how much of the car you would see through the ripples. I hope I've pitched it about right. I look forward to seeing the book. Nick |

I couldn't make the splash look right in front of the car so I decided that Hockney wouldn't have painted it that way ![]() ![]() _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Thanks Steve. It's only when someone points something out to you in greater detail that you begin to notice right away what looks weird. |

Many thanks Steve, got a new computer today. Now I can see everything properly. It would have been cheaper if I had just bought some glasses, but where is the fun in that! |

Re: Contest 215: The car pool
Thanks Steve. ![]() I kind of thought that it should, but when I googled for some real hovers to compare with, they seemed to just have the fine spray towards the back, with just a smidge of turbulence toward the back. So that is what I went with. Perhaps some more turbulence would look more real though? Dave |

That's exactly the right question to ask when looking at this image. I am proudly pinning three question marks on the wall. And of course you're right about the location of the splash. _________________ Is it necessary? Does it work? |

Re: Contest 215: The car pool
A river of blood or is it just a pool of Cinzano? Thanks a lot for your comments, Steve. Actually, it was meant to be the paint 'bleeding' off the car, obviously didn't manage to get that across visually! |
