And here it is in a cloud layer. Where the building with the white fascia is, there's a canal, and usually, you get a line of fog along the course of it, but I decided to go a bit more drastic!

Photograph of Bury Town Centre taken from a balloon a couple of years ago... the clouds were taken from a RyanAir Flight earlier this year, much to the amusement of other passengers ("Why is he taking photos of clouds?")

I'm very proud of my home town Dartford in Kent, England but it's not very exciting from the sky - an old norman church and a multi story car park rise highest - still it's in a valley so I was able to shoot it from above.

I'm sorry to have missed the last few weeks, the hits just keep on coming! Here's the lighthouse that stands at the entrance to Puget Sound and on to Neal's great shot of Seattle. I am always blown away by the talent and artistry here.

Re: Contest 220: City in the clouds
Like many of you I live in a small town, so we are short on tall buildings, I doubt there are more than 6 floors in the tallest building.
This is a photo of our house that my husband photographed from the hill behind us when we moved in 5 years ago. Clouds were photographed yesterday flying between Auckland and Nelson.

Despite the gloomy forecasts, I feel optimistic about the future. See the complete picture here:

Cheeky second entry. I made this by scanning a £2 coin and extruding the face to make the country.

Re: Contest 220: City in the clouds
Great to see so many home towns this week - looks like some of you live in interesting places.

First to switch on the fog machine was stefan, who also started the method of showing before and after images - great idea. It's good fog, with great perspective and texture. The church tower, though, looks like it's rising from a building right over by the river: I'd have brought the base down so it came up through the main bank of cloud, rather than all appearing behind it. This would make it look less detached from the rest of the building.

A misty scene from triststephens, in keeping with the medieval feel of the castle. We get the feeling the fog is in front of the scene rather than part of it, though: I'd have brought the top of the castle in front, to give the impression of low lying fog.

A great treatment from maiden, whose retoning helps to add a misty air to the view. But the mist seems to be in front of the buildings, rather than surrounding them: the low lying areas should perhaps be more engulfed, and lifting out the foreground hill and trees would have added to the sense of perspective.

Some very cold-looking fog from srowden - and that helicopter is a great addition, providing a useful focus. To enhance the low-lying feel, though, poking a couple of the buildings out of the fog would have helped a lot.

I enjoyed Nick Curtain's view - there's a real sense of three visual strata here. I particularly like the way the plane's near wing is dipping into the cloud, which integrates it nicely into the picture. And a hugely entertaining and innovative second entry - even if it is somewhat off topic!

Some very evocative mist from Josephine Harvatt, the foreground cloud neatly offsetting the distant haze. Best of all is the subtle rainbow effect caused by the water content of the nearby mist - what an excellent touch!

A hard choice of image from GKB - so much detail in this one! With this sort of view, Gordon, it's fine to have fuzzy cloud edges in front of the buildings, but their back sides should be absolutely crisp - after all, this is where they're standing in front of the cloud, rather than the other way around. Of course, this approach would take ages to do!

A powerful effect from brewell, with the high rise buildings neatly punctuating the low lying mist. It's a very consistent, convincing image - well judged. And I won't mention the fact that the fog is a pixel or two shy of the left hand side.

A wonderful animation from tooquilos, with the shark-like tailfin of the Quantas plane finally revealing a shark-faced plane lifting out of the clouds. Brilliant! And a neat fog effect, too! The inclusion of the Jaws theme in the flash version is wonderful!

Intriguing work from Neil O, giving us a view both above and below the dense cloud. I really like the conceit of this one - and it's a very striking image, too. Shouldn't the scene below be rather more shady, though? Either way, that's one hell of a building. Love the fans!

Great animation from james, with a futuristic London in which a variety of spacecraft try perching on the truncated top of the Gherkin. Some wonderful stuff here - I love the eye in the spaceship! and the scrolling cloud background adds an overall consistency to the whole piece. Great work in the static entry, too, with the full Gherkin and other buildings neatly penetrating the cloud.

An overall misty scene from mguyer, with a beautifully achieved sense of distant haze: I particularly like the way the light source is dazzling the view. And that's a much-travelled duck - has it replaced Sheila as your Hitchcock motif, Marty?

A stunning view of Seattle from Neal - that just out of shot sun adds a lot of meaning and action to the view, and matches the shadow direction on the buildings well. There's a slight awkwardness of colour change between the low and distant cloud, though: shouldn't the two merge together more?

A view of Shijiazhuang from gaoxiguo, which looks like a great city. A small problem with perspective: we are looking down on the clouds, but up at the buildings. The clouds need to be lower!

High drama from Hero Face: the recolouring of the shot matches the distant cloudscape perfectly. There's a very consistent level here as the cloud wraps around the buildings - a very well chosen combination altogether. Is the foreground cloud a little too transparent, though? I think using the Blend If command might have worked better than lowering the opacity of the layer on this one.

Evocative work from Ben Mills, with a real sense of early morning mist. I like the feel of this one, but I'm a little concerned about the thick bank of fog a the bottom: should this fade away a little more at the tops of the houses?

A very dramatic scene from Deborah Morley - and great perspective matching on the clouds, I think some of the nearby side of the bridge should have been a little more obscured by the white cloud - but overall it's a great effect, and that foreground tree adds a good sense of distance.

Very atmospheric work from The Mad Lep, with the cloud and fog so well integrated into the old photograph that it's hard to see the join. A great choice of image, and a great technique - well done!

An image of almost bhuddist serenity from Tom, the buildings in the cloud forming a centerpiece to a splendid composition. Great texture, as always, and details such as the beautiful sparkle on the foreground ball add interest and focus. Well worth checking out the high res original!

A rear window view from katew, with a lot of low lying cloud. But isn't that the sort of cloud we'd only see at high altitude? I like the effect on the distant hills, though. Shame about the balloonists - they'll see nothing either above or below!

Rather dark clouds from Babybiker, with a definite feel of rockwool about them. I like the way they lap around the buildings: shouldn't there be a patch of cloud inside the courtyard of the main building, though?

A good animation from michael sinclair, whose clouds are drifting slowly down off the mountain. My real issue here, though, is not with the clouds but the leopard; shouldn't he be sunk into the snow a little way? I like the shimmying soldiers in the second entry - the light through the trees is nice.

Excellent distant haze from Andy L, with buildings poking out convincingly in the mid ground. That's one hell of a fog there, Andy - the town looks swamped!

Dramatic stuff indeed from Ellen, with the lighthouse sticking out of dense fog. But shouldn't it be in front of those distant clouds? Seems to me it's a little overwhelmed by mist, still.

The clearing fog in vibeke's post is neatly achieved - clearly the heat from your house is melting everything around it! A few odd jumps as the clouds change, though: does the layer inadvertently double up at one stage?

I'd really like to see the "before" version of jwhite's post: the mist is beautifully achieved here, and it would be interesting to see the original for comparison. Odd place for a lighthouse, John!

Re: Contest 220: City in the clouds
Steve,
You're absolutely correct. I knew within a few minutes of choosing the image that this was not going to be an easy one. I spent far too long on such a complicated image and just had to call a halt well before it was finished as I had too many other things to do this week.

At least taught me that if someone wanted this one done commercially I would have to charge a heck of a lot for it in the hope that they changed their mind!

Steve
Glad you liked the plane shot. Google Earth came to the rescue for the landscape and good job too because my home town must be the least photographed place in the universe and, as luck would have it, I was unable to hire a helecopter on Saturday morning. I did not have much time and thought it was weak compared with the others, hence the second entry to try and regain some credibility. I made the coin shot about 2 years ago for a bit of fun one rainy afternoon. Yes, it's off topic, but if Michael can do it, then so can I !!.
