Re: Contest 240: Maritime mayhem
I'm not sure why I am doing this. Its a bit emotive, following the discussion on another thread. No emotions any more, just some comments on your contributions. I believe in creativity, fun and important way: enjoy improving our PS skills. Everyone is doing great work, I am enjoying and see us improving! In my humble opinion, justified by the request from Wayne M, here is a bit of critique, observation. I do not like doing this much, especially in written form to people I don't know well. See the discussion on the other post. Everyone's contribution is valuable to me. Anyway, in the gist of improvement for us all, and I think Steve and others want to encourage this maybe: My humble comments, and do get it wrong, even on my own work!, so ignore easily, and again I love everyone's contributions, so just a 10% comment: 1) Gordon, love your image. The reflection south is great, maybe do the same 3D north? The aliens lighting is a little bit of a problem. I think you fix it with a hint or two light sources? 2) Josephine: amazing! I thought some things were wrong with the reflection, but not at all. Love it! (Makes life easier getting rid of colour ![]() 3) Marty: I like it very much. I think if you change some of the perspective it may fit better into the space. Difficult, but I might suggest to change the top of the box to eye line. Then I would also flip the image and put the box other side so that the right and left perspective fit. Lower part perfect. 4) Asia: Wonderful! This is a small subjective point of art, so ignore, maybe put a little bit of the yellow highlights of some of the flame colour into the head? Really I see nothing wrong. 5) Andy: I might suggest you add a few shadows to get the ships to meld together? 6) I love Anna's animations and sound! This one just reminds me of Elton John - Bernie Taupin "Tiny Dancer" from "Madman across the Water" when I was growing up. but not the same gist. I sent a message to Anna on that. 7) Daniel: great, I was going to do something similar! Maybe I will later., 8xx) Wow, expert! Love it! 3%, dare I say you need some shadow on the front wood plinth below where the box overlaps? 9) Vibeke: very nice, love the theme. I think you could change some of the perspective on the box to align with books behind. Difficult, and I'm not sure anyone will notice or if I am correct ........ Your reflections are wonderful, this does everything, never lose that. Maybe need a bit more reflection on the left when the glass goes obtuse? 10) Brendan, excellent! I can not see any problems, challenge yourself more next time???? ........ ![]() 11) Clément : Very nice. I think maybe you need some fainter smoke with it too. Suggestion, sample your current smoke, transform it nicely, warp best, even bring in the cloud filter as a mask, then for the layer(s) bring down the opacity . Just an idea. Art: fill the box roof with smoke, to die from !!!! .... 12) I love your balls!!!! You gave a hint how you created, but I can not see any repeat pattern. Wow. Just one suggestion, on the left side, I would suggest you need to put the balls into profile. I think you could do that quite quickly, just slice them off and overlay, not sure if the light will be a problem though. 13) Wayne: You have made your life difficult. Very nice blending with the colours. No further comment on that. You've put you box into a hilly area with some barrel lens distortion, where it is difficult to find the perspectives. (Reference some of Steve's books on perspective (vanishing point), well explained and illustrated. This renascence stuff. I studied art and have done it often, but if anyone wants to ignore, they can do it, I still love the art, e.g. Lowre, pre renascence, Chinese earlier art and more. So .... the only stable references for you are the building horizontal and verticals (plumb bob and spirit levels). (Stupid door entry is not even orthogonal). So in brief, in my opinion: you need to fix first the top of the box first. The major clue here is the walk sign on the left. Shift/shear the back up. That will give you perspective. Second, the lower rail is a few degrees out, reference the building windows. Like the building, the windows in a 200yrs building are normally 100% correct. I use my eye too, but this can become subjective. Oh: See Josephen's comment, yes that is a good way to do it. For smoother or afterwards, use Ttansforem Warp tool too. I did that with the bus last week , if you look closely you can see the warp struggling, or is it me! Good luck, look fwd to your continuing contributions, and Steve will give you the proper feedback .......... 14) Bruce: Very nice / weird. I'm sure its not connected, but last week we had Cheltenham horse races. She looks like she came from there? Ireland did very well!! The queen made it too! Adopted ex pat in Ireland for 17 years, but always happy most the time. So now I'll prepare myself for Paddy's Day here in Cork! ![]() ![]() |

I will never do that again. Just had to purge that emotion. Steve does the best job in my opinion. |

Re: Contest 240: Maritime mayhem
Oh by the way, personally, I do like some feedback, not my poor rushed ones though. One is enough unless more specific. I feel my contributions go in to the void unless I get the occasional feedback. Always rely on Steve though, even when he gives me a "sigh" :-) |
