Re: Contest 247: Spinning Columbus
An interesting technical challenge this week, more about matching tone and perspective than about inspiration. That said, there were several highly imaginative entries - and a couple of truly outstanding pieces of work. First up the column was stefan, with a figure who fits the column nicely. Good angle of view - but is he a little lacking in contrast? The darkness around his legs isn't as black as the shadows on the column itself. A great angle from Jeepy: is the statue too small, though? He seems swamped by the column. If you move his legs closer together, you'll be able to make him larger. An excellent cutout from Ben Mills, and the pointing Lenin makes a good alternative. Best of all here is the fantastic pigeon droppings - a terrific addition! Mind you, that pigeon must be about four feet long, so I'd want to keep well out of its way. Perfect matching of position and tone from The Mad Lep - and those are great clouds! A little Gaussian Blur on the background would have brought the statue into sharper focus, though - as well as reducing the file size. A terrific animated entry - now you only have to find a way of wrapping those clouds around for a smooth, continuous movement... A somewhat portly Columbus from Josephine Harvatt - clearly, the New World diet of hamburgers and fries has taken its toll. We should be looking up at him a little more than this: but great pigeon droppings! Great angle of view from mguyer, and I particularly like the way his foot casts a shadow over the edge of the column. A touch more sky at the top would have allowed you to keep his finger in shot! And, given your vast array of ornithological imagery, a bird perched in there would be a neat addition. Aha! I spoke too soon! Terrific second entry - perfect! Clever stuff from Nick Curtain - what a great idea! I can't make out the design on the pigeon post envelope, though. Can you enlighten us? The touch of cloud around the base of the statues helps to tie them together rather neatly. Edit: just read your explanation of the motif on the envelope. Uh... interesting... Brewell's Colobus entry had me reaching for Wikipedia: a touch of genius here, Bruce. To find the monkey is one thing, to turn it to stone is something else again; but to move its arm so it points Columbus-wise is fantastic. I laughed out loud at this one! Even if it does appear to be toppling off the column... I love the idea in james' entry of Columbus changing his mind, and the ship reversing direction - what a brilliant conception! So good, in fact, that I'm not even going to mention the discrepancy between the position of the horizon and the angle of view of the column. Oh, it just slipped out. Sorry. Vibeke's use of Peter the Great is a good one: and, certainly, the horse balances surprisingly well on those rear legs. The angle of view isn't quite right - we need to be looking up at the statue more than we are. A very tricky one to adjust, with so much going on here, but I think ten minutes with the Liquify filter might just sort this out. Hilarious work from Gerard - and beautifully achieved submerging. The splashing at the top of the water works perfectly. A really neat idea, perfectly executed. Certainly well worth a title for you, Gerard. So let me see... all we know about you is that you come from Holland... I think Digital Dutchman is better than Pissing Boy, don't you? "I went for technical rather than creative," says katew - and as a piece of pure technical achievement, this is superb. The colour of the statue, the depth of the shadows, the angle of view all match the column perfectly: and the added touch of the foot's shadow overlapping the edge of the column is just right. Excellent work, Kate - a seamless job. Beautiful, shocking and inspired work from Les Moore - clearly a man of deep imagination. The dark tones are neatly offset by the subtle highlights on the statues, and the mist adds a mystical air. The blood is perfect, dripping from the column and over the sides of the box - and I do like the displaced lid from last week. It's only the red eyes on Columbus that seem a little out of place here. Les, this is brilliant work. Now if we can only drag you kicking and screaming into the daylight... Good matching of tone and scale from Rufus - and you're right, Columbus is now pointing in the right direction rather than out to sea, as my son pointed out when we were in Barcelona. On the other hand, if the ships had followed his pointing finger, they'd have run aground up Las Ramblas pretty quickly. Many versions of Columbus from tooquilos - and it's worth watching the GIF version first, to see the detail of the spinning and dancing Columbus, before switching to the greatly reduced flash version with its soundtrack. And the airships bear the names of Columbus' ships! Fabulous. I don't recognise the horseman in gaoxiguo's entry. A clever idea, moving the statue to the right so we can't see its back leg is standing on air! The perspective fits perfectly with the background image. Very good work. Most intrigued by michael sinclair's entry. Why are Columbus' legs tied to a bollard? What's the story here? I like the rebuilt foot, and the tonal matching is good. Perhaps enlarging the top of the column to take both the foot and the bollard would have helped the sense of balance? Hope the eye strain gets better. Dazzling, outstanding work from Emil. the angle of the column adds a dynamic quality to the image, and it fits beautifully into the ship. A terrific idea, perfectly executed. The rain and stormy sea really add to the dynamism and energy of the image. This is a fantastic entry, Emil, and certainly earns you a title. It's been a few years since I was in the Czech Republic, but does Kafka's Komrade seem acceptable? Truly, amazing work. Congratulations to our two title-winners this week. Remember, titles are awarded for images of outstanding personal excellence. If anyone is not happy with their titles, and would like them changed, I'm very happy to do so! |

Re: Contest 247: Spinning Columbus
Thanks so much Steve, I appreciate your comments. "Kicking and screaming into the daylight" is about right. I'll see if I can finish this weeks challenge before the sun goes down. ![]() I just wanna say thanks to Steve for these weekly challenges and for his comments on everyones work at the end of the week. I learn a lot from these challenges. These challenges are a great way to learn how to take an image that you might not have picked on your own or an image that may not seem all that "exciting" at first glance but you're forced to use your imagination to create something from them. I think this really helps you use your mind and your photoshop skills and put them to the test. These are a great way to learn and grow. So again......thanks Steve. |

I must say that after seeing Katew's image, I did go back and adjusted the perspective on my monkey. Kudos for the Digital Duchman and Kafka's Komrade! _________________ I aim to give pause. |
