Re: Challenge 253: Bring him to life, part 2
Some very ingenious approaches this week, once again going far beyond what was asked of you for some truly spectacular results. What’s most impressive is the way so many of you have concealed the bundle by his foot in a natural, realistic manner.

First entry was from Jeepy, who has combined the three previous Challenges into one montage - very clever! I like the idea of the him as a boatman. Just one thing: the boat and the man should both have reflections!

Fantastic work from Josephine Harvatt: with his striped towel (I have one just like it) and handkerchief, he looks just like the sort of day tripper we see at the seaside. Maybe all that’s needed is to swap the oar for an ice cream cone?

A good location from mguyer, with a neat new syrup to top him off (cockney rhyming slang: syrup = syrup of figs = wig). He does seem a little pale, given all that sunshine, though.

Detailed work from Nick Curtain, including chest hair and a patterned handkerchief (or should that be neckerchief?). A good angle of view, too, stressing the fact that we’re looking up at him. Neat work.

Fantastic body hair from Ben Mills - is that a whole new torso, or did you enhance the current one? And it looks like a new head, too. There’s a great warm glow to the whole image - very tasty, Ben. Most appealing.

A couple of great “Fats” from brewell - and you have to admire the detailed way in which the flag has been wrapped around the body. Their faces seem a little soft, though, in comparison to the background: perhaps more of a painterly treatment to the whole image would unite the elements? Good work on the faces in the second entry.

We have a new member this week - LonnieK, with a splendid Western theme. I recognise the beard from my RetouchPRO tutorial! Good to see you were taking notes! Some excellent detail here: the oar replaced with a shotgun works perfectly, and the way the revolver has been tucked into the waistband is excellent - look at the shading that shows it continuing beneath the clothes. Good chest hair, and the out-of-focus background throws the image neatly into the front. Good work - and welcome to the forum, Lonnie.

Very clever work from michael sinclair this week. Note how the oar bas been removed and replaced with a rope, and the arm copied to replace the shoulder that had the coat draped over it. The shorts are also a good addition. Not altogether sure about the animation, Michael, which just makes me seasick - or is that the idea? I like the dance movements in the second entry!

Beautiful work from Steve Mac: delicate body shading (including individually tinted nipples) and a belt that ties the whole body together. But it’s the shading on the jacket that really works for me: it’s a perfect match for the scene, adding greatly to the realism.

A neat idea from vibeke, giving him the raised position he needs. But if he’s back to being a statue, why is he human coloured? Fantastic work on the jeans, and I love the check shirt - except it does seem a little revealing in the breast area...

A very textural entry from Stefan, with some great patterns and shading. The texture on the coat all seems to lie in the same plane, though: on the sleeve, for instance, it really needs to be wrapped into more of a cylinder shape (use the Horizontal Only setting in Spherize) before being applied to the image. Interesting new facial hair!

I like Emma’s medical entry - those glasses are an excellent addition (although I’m not sure about the polka dots). But why is the whole image so dark? You need to turn a few more lights on!

A fantastic retro entry from tooquilos - love the tie, the tattoo, the hat and the moustache. Couple of points: the face could do with some blending and shading where it meets the ear, and the texture on the jacket does need to curve over the contours (try Liquify?). The animated version is spectacular, though - and I love the added soundtrack in the flash version!

The animations James turns in just get more and more sophisticated... just look at all the detail in here! The shaking of the swordfish, with the man’s head movements; the exquisite flying, turning, approaching and grabbing of the eagle, complete with ground shadow; the woman’s movements after the fish is snatched from her hands... I can’t imagine how long this intricate piece must have taken. James, you’re doing things with GIFs that no-one has done before. Wonderful.

A neat idea from katew - and a nicely modelled new sign for the betting shop. I like the belt especially, and the neatly clutched betting slip. He does seem awfully pale, though!

A first animation from China, and it’s a brilliant piece of work: the pieces of the statue fall off one by one, gathering at the man’s feet, to reveal the perfectly tinted figure beneath. Excellent animation: but you really should have coloured the figure yourself! The animation also needs to loop, so we don’t have to reload it to watch it again.

A very nice piece of work from Deborah Morley - great body hair, and I like the way he’s tucked behind that lock boom (see, I know all these technical boating terms). Is he a fraction too large, compared with the boatman next to him? Perhaps - but great texture and tinting, all the same.

Of course, an ice cream would have been perfect - but do you really think he needs any extra cholestorol ?
