Lovely work Tori

Wayne - as gruesome as yours is it pales next to Michael's animation

Very educational Deborah!
I spent five minutes trying to find out what the title and author is an anagram of ....and then gave up and googled it

Thanks Nick, Love the way you have recreated the feeling you get whilst underwater. Very impressive.
Josephine, I see what you mean there can't be anything more visually upsetting than a persistent floater

Whoops, tried to replace picture with another version and it disappeared. Oh well here's the revised version. I figure killing Zombies is far less likely to offend.

Josephine - I didn't think of an anagram! Was just trying to find a good name for the book, and then when I saw the name of the submarine, that was it. Good old Google!
Wayne, great image - was that a real person you started from?

Hi Wayne,
It looks like an album from Marillion designed by a airbrush artist about 15 years ago! Looks very classy and spooky!!

Thanks for the positive comments Gerard, I was a bit worried about pushing the limits of decency, hence the change to the Zombie appearance.
Nice banner by the way.

Very impressive Neal - where did you get the image of goldfish and bowl from?

Re: Challenge 260: Float my boat
Hi, everyone - good to be back. And great to see such a terrific range of entries waiting for me.

First to jump underwater was GKB, with a neatly rebuilt craft and some aquatic spotlight action - very pretty! The edges of the beams seem a touch harsh, perhaps: more softening required? I like the overall tone and feel here. The second entry is just fantastic - wonderful work! I love the wooden planet!

Nice work from mguyer, with good retoning to match the underwater setting. And that’s quite fish behind! I like the way the sub is just out of shot, it adds a certain realism to the picture. And I agree, the additional fish in the second entry is a help - but perhaps it should be swimming in the same direction as the sub and the other fish? A most entertaining third entry, too. All it needs is a reflection...

A touch of nostalgia from Ben Mills - and it does work rather well in yellow, for sure.

I like the way tooquilos has the octopus tentacles wrapped around the sub in our second Beatles-themed entry - a slight angle on the sub itself might have helped a little here. A great animation, too - do octopi really bark like dogs? And who has replaced Ringo on the soundtrack?

A fantastic submarine whale from gaoxiguo - amazing work! Beautiful distortion and montage. And the screen shot shows just how much work went into this one.

A beautiful scene from stefan, placing the sub in the clouds and adding a sail: the angle helps hugely. Excellent work!

A new member this week: willo10 has given us a great reconstructed sub, with a cool underwater view. The reflected dolphin could do with being a touch distorted by rippling, even though the water appears calm - and make sure the ripples don’t appear in front of the splash! Otherwise, a terrific first entry. Welcome to the forum!

There’s a tremendous sense of menace and mystery in brewell’s entry, from the tantalizing reeds in the foreground to that brooding shark behind. The most amazing trick here, however, was to change the angle of the sub to a three-quarter view: that must have taken some time! Excellent work, Bruce!

A stark and stylized view from Josephine Harvatt, which has the feel of an old engraving to it - a touch of Jules Verne, perhaps. A nicely achieved, subtle entry.

Neat rebuilding from Gerard - I particularly like the lettering style here, and the overall lighting. A great stream of bubbles, too!

An entertaining animation from michael sinclair - looks like you could do with a few more hands in different positions, Michael. That’s some serious cleaning power you keep there - ripe for comic exploitation, I’d have thought. High drama in the second entry - perhaps a touch more contrast needed on the sub? I enjoyed the third entry.

Gorgeous work from vibeke: not just the immaculate rebuilding of the boat, but the beautiful lighting effects that blend it so well into the background. Excellent!

An innovative view from LonnieK, presenting an intriguing diorama. Beautiful construction, from the subtle placement and shading of the sub to the perfect silhouettes in front. The way the sub breaks through the water surface, the position of the shark, the consistent tone of the whole composition - perfect, and well deserving of a title for you. Try as I might, I can’t think of any Photoshop titles relevant to a retired architectural millwork engineer, so I’ve settled on Diorama Dreamer - hope this is acceptable! Well done tracking down the name of the original sub, too.

There’s a curious model quality to Nick Curtain’s subtle illustration: is it perhaps the strongly out of focus background? I like the feel of this one, and the restrained colour palette. I do get the sense the sub is somehow hanging in space, though. Perhaps a stream of bubbles would help to define the water as a medium? An entertaining second entry!

Good research from Deborah Morley, finding the original sub: and a tasty book cover too. With this sort of image, though, you do need to be careful about perspective: because there’s no foreshortening used here, the top of the book looks wider than the bottom. It’s leaning away from us, so some perspective is definitely required.

I laughed out loud at Emma’s entry - so sad to see the sub smashed to pieces on the shore, but a brilliant idea! Some very weird perspective in the soldiers, though - eyelines on the horizon, remember!

Our second new member this week is Tori from South Carolina, with a fantastic book cover. I’d love to know what the book you started with was like - but the sub is perfectly integrated into this view. An excellent first entry - welcome to the forum!

An extraordinary image - and a welcome return - from wayne morton. Not a huge amount of sub in this image, but it’s a splendid piece of work. THe only thing that jumps out for me is the eye in the mouth, which detracts from the power of the piece by making it more unreal. Interesting use of texture!

A dramatic near miss in James’ animation this week - like the water rippling effect! The boat seems too strongly coloured for its underwater position, though. Tone down those hues!

Subtle and clever work from Neal - note the faint reflection directly above the sub. A great change of angle, and the porthole makes a perfect eye.

Massive extra firepower from China - a beautiful airship, with a fantastic blend of real and fantasy. Very good work!

Some very interesting surrealism from Emil, with a beautifully submerged chest of drawers - I like the way the water bends around the drawers here. Great detail, with good water and ripples. The only problem is with the reflections: we shouldn’t be able to see into the drawer from this angle. The reflection would appear at the same angle as another drawer pulled out beneath. Try it, you’ll see what I mean.

Great work, everyone.
