Re: Challenge 269: Down in the Crypt
There's nothing like the approach of Halloween to bring out the ghoul in us... and we've certainly had some ghoulish entries this week.

First into the dungeon was The Mad Lep, with a beautifully lit scene: those candles do the job perfectly. I love the bloodstain on the floor, the new barred door and the air of gloom. The skeleton seems just a little small for the height of the doorways, though - and perhaps a bit too bright?

So let's see - we've got a guillotine, a noose and a swordsman from mguyer... looks like that skull's from someone most seriously done to death. A great atmosphere down here - nice job!

A terrific animation from tooquilos - I love the moment when "Frankie" jumps up in glee and knocks the chandelier. A great selection of sounds, as well - they really make it hum along. So, tell us: who does the voices?

Vincent Price and Peter Lorre together? Now that's too good to be true... funny work from maiden, with a nicely gloomy scene illuminated by rather greenish candles. Interesting shadows of the candle holders on the wall - really gives them a sense of space, but what's casting them?

I like the ghostly ecclesiastical figure in vibeke's entry - a good treatment of the blur. The rat's a good addition, too, as is the view through the window. That candle needs to be casting stronger shadows, though - particularly beneath the piece of stone it's resting on.

An electric image from Jonvee Leo: do you think he needs to be tinted blue to match the background? I assume you used Alien Skin Eye Candy for the lightning, and it works well. Would be better if it came slightly within the figure area - reduce the selection size before applying it.

Terrific atmosphere from Nick Curtain. The key figures of the woman and the chap in the coffin draw our eye, but for me the strongest points are the beautiful mist and that fantastic light/shadow combination on the candle. And I like the Cavern reference in the second entry!

I loved Sophie's depiction of Gordon Brown's underground hideaway: the carpet, the bookshelves, the decoration - a fantastic makeover. The only small problem is that the foreground elements are slightly too small for the perspective of the scene - particularly the blue chair on the right. Excellent pose from Gordon!

A beautiful, detailed scene in the first Friday Challenge entry from laddition. The restrained use of colour, the surreal objects, the scratches in the wall - fantastic. This is a really excellent piece of work, Véronique! Are you happy reading this in English? Or should I attempt to translate it into French?

A saucy entry from LonnieK, and one that's deceptively simple. Look at the focus blur in the distance, the soft shadows, the tasty reflections in the floor - very cool stuff.

There's something rather sad about brewell's entry - perhaps it's the figure tending her orange trees, or the fact that they can be getting very little light down there. Oranges seem to be doing OK, though! A moody and nicely composed scene.

A lot of detailed work has gone into michael sinclair' rebuilding of the crypt as part of Paddington station - you really give yourself punishment, Michael! A very consistent image. Just think how much easier this would have been with layer masks. A great animation in the second entry - but why do the urinals get washed away? And aren't they at a rather dodgy angle?

A glorious and ghostly image from Deborah Morley - I'm so glad I made those skeletons for the DVD! A clever and detailed scene - I particularly like the triple shadow of the piano player, cast by the three candles!

An altogether more urban scene from Ben Mills, with a graffiti-covered, litter-strewn refuge. Very detailed, a powerful image.

Great Scooby Doo characters from katew: and what a perfect setting for them! A little confused by Scooby's shadow, though: if it's going to be that strong, you need at least two of them!

A first Friday Challenge entry from Republic of Game - and a first montage too, it would seem. It's a beautiful piece of work, full of detail and atmosphere: the added ivy and other plant life really brings the outside scene indoors. And yes, the 100k limit is limiting - but I have my bandwidth to consider! If you find it too limiting, many prefer to use external hosting sites such as Photobucket.

Our third new contestant this week is James West, with a clever image of a perfectly inappropriate tourist (I recognise him!) about to be set upon by the owner of the ghostly shadow. A good composition, with great extra features - the mist, the shadow on the ground, the side lighting, the darkened doorways. A great first entry, James - welcome to the forum!

I've never seen the Hannah Montana show, so I'm not sure why it causes Neal such distress. Actually, I found this image rather disturbing. I'm still not sure whether to remove it or not - something I've rarely done on the forum. Are you missing Bush already, Neal?

Plenty of atmosphere from Emil - I love the flame from the torch! Alien Skin? Or is it real? And a beautifully lit Poser figure to go with it. So... which door leads to death?

As BigVern says: some really great atmospheric images this week!

Many thanks Steve.
I admit I had a really good laugh making the skeletons dance, it cheered up a dull October day!
So, how did you make the skeletons?
Celia, thank you for your comment, glad it made you laugh.

I never noticed the size disparity! Thanks for pointing it out, I'll have to remember that next time.

I attempted to tone down mister skelly, but I couldn't find a way to do it that wouldn't make him look.. well.. Photoshopped.
Is there a good way of doing that?

Hello Steve,

Thank you for comment. No, it is real flame.

You mentioned already twice the Alien Skin at my work and I am wondering what this plug-in could do. Are you using that plug-in for making flames and smoke? Let me know what level of reality the plug-in can reach, thank you. I am very interesting in, where can I get it?

Sorry I didn't take part this week. It was all a bit too creepy for me and I got a bit frighted!

Nice work from everyone.

Eye Candy is three sets of plug-ins made by Alien Skin. The best is called Impact, which creates fire, smoke, as well as a fantastic chrome effect. See it at www.alienskin.com!

Thanks so much Steve for your encouraging words. I so admired the work other contributors with their ghosts and tombs but was void of ideas along those lines.

I will tweak the foreground objects to understand your comment.

Re: Challenge 269: Down in the Crypt
Now that you mention it, the scene is kind of reminiscent of "Silent Running," a space-greenhouse movie with Bruce Dern.
