Re: Challenge 270: sky fighters
I had real problems with this one. Initial idea came quickly. But getting everything to work together coherently colour and perspective wise was quite tough. Anyway this is my finished version with a link for the fully optimized one!! Apologies to anyone with a high resoloution monitor it might look a little bright and missing detail! http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e377/the_ashened/timeholeopti.jpg ![]() |

Re: Challenge 270: sky fighters
Thank you laddition. Your space scene is pretty cool and one of my favorites this week. I had toyed with a similar idea; Emelia Erhart & the Bermuda Triangle, but in the end I opted for an ode to the adventure movies of the 50s and 60s like The Land that Time Forgot et al. |

Thanks Jota!! And I think Steve quipped you right as ingenious. I couldn't think of another application of a bi-plane that wasn't already done. But you got that one down pretty good!! |

Thanks Republic of Game. Merci laddition, J'apprécie toutes les entrées. Certains nous défient! Le grand espace de vous. Not familiar with that film Becky, but seems a theme this week. Yours sits nicely in the cockpit ![]() |

Re: Challenge 270: sky fighters
First to climb into the cockpit this week was, as we might expect, GKB - after all, he has spent many years photographing planes. A fantastic scene, with Snoopy chasing his arch enemy, the Red Baron. Fantastic attention to detail here: the decals on the side of the plane, the blowing scarf, the smoke and spinning propeller, and the excellent 3D model of the Red Baron's plane. A dramatic scene, Gordon! An underwater scene from laddition, with the plane crashed at the bottom of the sea. I like the idea, but the divide between the bright top and the dark bottom is too strong: they should both fade away to the same colour much more gradually. Good extra detail in the second entry - but fix that distant view! A fantastic third entry: there's real drama here, and the Enola Gay lettering spells out the story. A very powerful piece of work, Véronique! Good to see Mrs mguyer back in mguyer's entry - a great angle of view, Marty. But the propeller looks like it's stalled: we should see the spin, but not a static version as well. Much better in the second entry - but tuck it behind that wing strut, not in front of it! High drama from Ben Mills: a great sense of the propeller, the precipitous angle of the ground heightens the action, and the distant plane looks ripe for shooting down. A good choice of pilot - but you can't fool me by just changing his jacket colour, you know. A good view, and a good propeller from PDelavigne. I like the dog and pilot, but the pilot is much too big for the plane! And shouldn't he be looking where he's going? A very funny scene from Jonvee Leo, recreating the end of the movie Chicken Run: the chickens fit well into the cockpit, and the added flying eggs and knives add a lot of action. I like the crack where the knife sticks in, but some of the eggs should be broken. And that propeller needs to spin round! The decoration on the back of the plane is a good idea, but the colours are much too strong - and more shading needed to make it look part of the plane. The final approach from Nick Curtain, with a strong night-time scene and a good view of the runway. Just to be pedantic, I believe the pilot sits in the rear seat in these planes - unless he's already bailed out, that is. If it were me I'd light up all the instruments, although I don't know if this would be authentic. Good to see Eggbox back - with an ingeniously reworked plane decorated in RAF livery. A great achievement, and the flying scarf is a nice touch - but I'm surprised to see the pilot can still fly with a bag over his head. Welcome back, Ted. Of course, when it comes to flying, Top Gun does spring to mind - so the Cruises are especially appropriate in brewell's entry. A fantastic fit in the cockpit, both looking over their shoulders at us: shame the propeller seems to be stalling (and with that building right in the flightpath, too). And thanks for fixing my guy wires! Great attention to detail! A rare animation from BigVern - I really like the angle of view of the ground, with the HotChiPs cover embedded into the field. An excellent spinning propeller, too. This would have worked better as a GIF - surely there's some way to stop it turning into a Flash movie? Very subtle shadow movement here! Powerful stuff from LonnieK: the pilots fit perfectly into the cockpit, and the out-of-focus airliner looms menacingly over the biplane. I particularly liked the typography and positioning of the sign on the plane - very accomplished work! I'm sorry Neal had to spend so long cutting out the plane - I know exactly how long this takes! A great King Kong scene, recreated from the point of view of one of the hapless pilots who gets swatted by those giant paws. Devilishly handsome chap you've picked there, Neal - but he needs to look where he's going... A gorgeous paint job from tooquilos - and a fine couple of pilots, with a good view and a good prop spin. I like the acrobatics in the animated version - and, of course, the soundtrack. Now there's a song I haven't heard for many years. A World War 2 pilot from Paul2007 - but a decidedly contemporary background (or, at least, one from the recent past). I like the propeller spin, but the pilot's maybe rather too large for the cockpit. If the plane's on the ground, though, you need to watch your angles: the top of the wing would need to be parallel to the horizon in order for both wheels to be touching the runway! I really like the tourist with his map in vibeke's entry - although a map showing the whole of North America might not be quite as detailed as he needs (especially as he seems to be flying over New Zealand). Is his head too small for his body? I like the angle of the view! For once, michael sinclair is thoroughly on-topic - and a fantastic animation, full of life and interest. The way the ground spins around adds real drama to the scene. A couple of suggestions: since you seem to have ten frames here (I'm counting landscapes), the gunfire effect would be more dramatic if it didn't coincide exactly with the pulsating of the flames. And the Richthofen lettering should be behind the flames, rather than in front - and perhaps painted on, rather than engraved into the side of the plane? Great image! A beautiful, intense scene from Republic of Game, whose pilots are gamely battling dinosaurs. Historical accuracy aside, what makes this image work so well is the muted tones, tying the whole picture together - and the extraordinary detail of the plane, recoloured, decorated and beautifully distressed to make it look old and worn. It's a really powerful, balanced piece of work, that's certainly good enough to earn you a title. So, let's see: no biographical details in your profile, so we'll have to draw inspiration from this image alone. I think Detail Distresser fits the bill for this one. Excellent work. Interesting work from Jota120, whose pilot is bailing out of the biplane - and just in time, too, it looks as if that wing extension is about to fall off due to gangrene. A good attempt, Trevor, but it should be the same colour as the rest of the wing - and really needs some supporting struts to hold it up! A fine, dramatic background image, though, and a novel approach to the problem. I like the pose of the pilot, as well. A colourful scene from maiden - I think we've seen that pilot before! It's the animated version that really sings here: the wavering landscape and the cloud cover are just perfect. Is the landscape 3D modelled? Or is it just that the sky is moving independently? How was this created? I'm intrigued! Cool new avatar, too. Great week! |

Re: Challenge 270: sky fighters
Thanks for the comments Steve. What I wanted to achieve was the old celluloid look with a sepia tone, to capture that 50s/60s adventure movie look with a mock still from a movie hence the historical inconsistency. The way back home for the would-be adventurers was the timehole in the background. The colouring of the plane took the longest, I toyed with a few colours eventually deciding that a worn look was going to be the best and easiest way to keep everything flowing. Again thanks for the comments and the title!! |

Re: Challenge 270: sky fighters
Thanks Steve. The background isn't 3D it's just layered to make it look that way - The Island and Sea were copied to their own layers above the original photo and scaled and positioned individually. The Clouds were created in Trapcode's Particular in AfterEffects and I used Expressions in AfterEffects to create some rotation and wiggle to the scenery to simulate the plane's motion - knowing the camera would be fixed to the plane then the plane itself would not appear to wiggle. Thanks for the compliment about my avatar - I know it's coming up to Halloween so I thought I'd post a scary picture ![]() |
