Nice sheen Sophie ... hope the weather stays fine for the big day tomorrow. I think your huge pile looks very ominous, Nick. Another wicked animation Anna. Cheers Vern |

Thank you Sophia. How did you make the melting wax? I like it, is it dodge/burn and plastic warp effect? _________________ I have the true feeling of myself only when I am unbearably unhappy. - Franz Kafka |

Re: Challenge 271: the wax cannon
So it seems not all of you are big fans of contemporary art. Well, fair enough: but my view is always that, with art, you have to see it to judge it. Photographs and descriptions alone aren't enough. And although this Anish Kapoor piece may sound bizarre, in reality it does have a certain visceral power. A cheeky entry from Ben Mills, with a Kapoor-style Colonel Sanders blasting away at chickens - and that's certainly the grossest view of a chicken I've ever seen. Lawyer? I'd start greasing your wrists for the handcuffs now. The first of the week's Canon gags comes from powerslave - a very neat idea. The camera doesn't look enough like it's either made of, or spattered with, wax: maybe try a Median filter with a high setting, followed (of course) by my old friend Plastic Wrap? Gorgeous work from tooquilos - apart from the cleaned-up room, the duck shooting range fits the shape of the archway perfectly. Is this all hand-created in Photoshop? The animation is certainly fun - if a little unfair on the ducks! Excellent soundtrack as always, Anna. And thanks for the animation showing the cannon in action. I waited to see it live - and it was rather underwhelming. A remarkably accurate job fro Nick Curtain: that's exactly how the balls of wax look when they pile up. I'm really intrigued by this one, Nick: did you find an image of a completed exhibit elsewhere? That doesn't look hand generated. Menacing work from Jonvee Leo: a very stark image, the black accentuating the sense of aggression. I like this one. Great to see a guest appearance from the zebu in Deborah Morley's entry - thanks for the plug! And I really like the way the room seems to be spattered with dung rather than wax. Very clever stuff. The balls of wax are building their own artwork in gaoxiguo's entry - and I like the cloud wall painting, especially the subtle way it wraps around the corner. Some very artfully created wax from Jota120, nicely textured and pockmarked. Only the left side needs attention: hard to pin it down, but it looks rather like a flat wall there. I really like the second entry, though: fantastic flames, and what a great explosive effect! Beautiful. A beautiful entry from laddition, with textured walls and a strong cannon fire. You need to watch your perspective, though: the tops of the doors do not match the rest of the scene. A very powerful second entry. The word carved into the brick should be sheared, not rotated - keep the letters upright, and slant them downwards. It seems michael sinclair is no Kapoor fan - well, as I said, you have to see it to experience it. A great animation, though, made all the more interesting by Michael's uncanny resemblance to Kapoor - now that really is an irony. Interesting second entry: you really don't like this, do you! There's a real subtlety to brewell's post, with the surreal Blue Man Group surrendering to a rival Green Man. Just the one criticism - the door way is much bigger than that! But I'll let it pass. A tasty Jackson Pollock reference from Josephine Harvatt - now what would he have made of this exhibit, I wonder? I think he might have rather liked it. I love Pollock's work, and it's good to see it turned into wallpaper! An absolutely stunning clean-up from Neal - immaculate paint and woodwork, and the subtle shine on the floor. Immaculate! I see vibeke has got the decorators in - I think the oneon the right is working with more than just white emulsion. Great extra wax spatters, nicely overlaid on the scene. Your people are a touch large for the doorway, though! A good printer gag from BigVern - the recoloured Magenta ink is really tasty! Funny work, Vern. But you missed a trick with the printer - you should have had another Anish Kapoor printing out of it. Very clever stuff from Emil - the view from the inside of the cannon, as the ball of wax shoots out of it. The interior is immaculately created, complete with a depth of field effect: ingenious! Love it! Glad to see Sophie managed to pull herself away from her son's wedding to take part this week. (Don't worry, we can always Photoshop you into the wedding pictures if you miss the event.) A lovely wax texture here, and the whole scene reminds me of Beckett's play Happy Days, in which the main character ends up buried up to the neck in sand. Anish Kapoor is coming in for a real pasting this week! Most enjoyable all round. Great work, everyone. |

Re: Challenge 271: the wax cannon
Hi Steve Glad you liked it. The wax is actually a pile of manure, colourised with a slight application of plastic wrap and a curves adjustment. I had to clone out some straw and use the blur tool to add realism. Nick |

Re: Challenge 271: the wax cannon
Thank you Steve. The Duck shooting gallery was a clip art which I found and virtually rebuilt..probably would of been quicker to hand draw it from scratch lol. Be assured that NO ducks were harmed during the making of the animation (if you look..the cannon balls skillfully miss the ducks each time ![]() ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |

Thanks Steve and including a printout of Mr Kapoor would have added an extra layer to my image both physically and figuratively. Cheers Vern. |

Re: Challenge 271: the wax cannon
Excellent first entry, Mark. The combination of the brass figures against the similar colour background is very striking, and the wax is well spattered on them... a good sense of perspective and proportion here, too. Welcome to the Challenge! Keep them coming! |

Thanks Steve! I made it to the church on time. ![]() Thanks Vern. The weather was kind. We were very fortunate indeed. Love your banner. And thanks Emil. All I did was paint two tones of dark red in blobs and apply plastic wrap and liquify and drop shadow. |
