Many thanks Trevor, I must admit I was struggling for an idea - tried to find usable pics of Thomas & John Knoll, but no luck. Well done with your idea, it works well. Many thanks Nick, great work from you as usual! |

Thanks Deborah, I was going crazy with 3 of them, rescused one. I also thought of Thomas & John Knoll, but just video I could not "snap", you guys would have done it better than me, So the final one next (the 3rd is stuck on a table somewhere in Europe by itself ![]() |

Re: Challenge 289: Happy Birthday, Photoshop
First to cut the cake this week was Nick Curtain, with a neatly sliced cutaway. I like the curl on the remaining ribbon, and the texture of the cake, and the thickness of the icing: the crumbs are a great addition. Shouldn't we see some slight lighting variation as the interior turns the corner? I like the Photoshop table mat! A very fruity cake indeed from tooquilos - neatly sliced open, and that's a splendid puff of smoke from the candle. Great to see all those early splash screens in the animated version - that really takes me back! A great scene from GKB, who seems to have placed his cake and teacup on the floor. Tip: don't align the corner of the table with the corner of the room, and it will look more like a table! I like the card, and the plate, and the ribbon, and really, I hate to bring up the P word... but the perspective of the scene needs to be set by the cake, which is viewed at a stronger angle than the rest of the room. And wouldn't there be a few crumbs left behind? Very neat slicing from Ben Mills - I like the difference in shading on the interior, and the removed ribbon, and the plate. The bottom edge of the inside is just too neat, though, too straight a line: and some crumbs would really help this! Very clever work from brewell - I love those marching ants! I've been looking at those things for 20 years now and never made the connection. Simple, but brilliant. An exuberant entry from Carlo Alessandro Della Valle, with a nicely cut cake - and I like the fact that the piece taken out is on the plate, but you really need to have another look at the angle of it. The Photoshop table napkins are a really good idea! A moody entry from tomiloi, with subtle lighting. Excellent flame and smoke effect on the candles, and I like the lighting on the top of the candle: not entirely sure about its shadow. The slice taken out works very well, and I like the fact it's at the back. A very neat cutout from Emil, with a nicely curled ribbon. I like the lighting on here, which focuses attention onto the cake. The reflection is a good idea - but a steel plate isn't a perfect mirror. Darken the reflection, and the whole cake will make more sense. A terrific scene from vibeke, with a slice of cake that's been neatly turned around to face the other way - nice touch. Do you really place your tablet in front of your keyboard, though, rather than to the side? And what part does the old stapler play in your Photoshop workflow? Great view! I like the extra decorations added by katew, and the neatly refracted view through the champagne glass (although it could do with some champagne in it). Something a little odd about the shape of the cut slice: the angle of the top doesn't match that at the bottom. The reflection of the interior is a very good effect. A very tastily-lifted slice of cake from michael sinclair, despite the oversized wasp (and, really, you do not want to see his original entry). Good matching of the lettering on the icing - but would the cut ribbon spring back into place like that? I'm not sure of their relevance, but I like the dancing mice in the second entry - but lose the shadow on the front one! Or, at least, put it in perspective! I'm not entirely sure what to make of Jeepy's entry - I seem to have aged 20 years and changed sex. Still, probably worth it for the very neat hat and earring. I like the way the ribbon hangs over the brim - but I could never wear that shade of eye shadow! A clever play on words in the second entry. As Trevor pointed out: bon appe'cheat! A rectangular slice taken out of redsnapper's cake - how on earth would we cut a slice that shape, with so much precision? And what looks like a bowl of begonias being eaten by a cartoon fox in the background. Please explain! I greatly enjoyed LonnieK 's soaraway entry - there's something really impressive about the scale here, and the cutout piece is very nicely suspended from that helicopter. Just wondering - shouldn't the cables wrap around the cake, rather than just holding it by the icing? I like the way the main cake has been recoloured and reshaped to match its surroundings - nicely done. I always wondered how to get a square piece out of a cake - and james' animation shows the precise method. I like the double cut on the right, causing the second slice to fall over, and the tongs moving the cut piece onto the plate. I assume those are your hands and arms? Keep on like this and pretty soon we'll have enough body parts to rebuild you from scratch! We've seen some great cheats on the forum, but laddition's fully-eaten cake is probably the most cheating yet! For those who don't speak French, the caption reads: "We're sorry, but this event is finished. Come back in 20 years." I'l make a date in my diary! A packed scene from Jota120, with a vast cake hovering above the heads of commuters at Waterloo station. I like the banners in the background, and understand that the bird is picking the number 0 out of the icing: but what's going on inside the 2? And is anything holding that cake up in the air? An ingenious solution in the second entry - but have you just tried a cake slice? Deborah Morley's entry is a near perfect filling of the brief. The pieces cut out of the cake have been rearranged - with the lettering still visible on the icing - and one even turned around; the perspective of the table matches the cake (very nearly). There's some great detail - the curls on the ribbon, the reflection of the stand - that add to the realism. Just a couple of very minor points: the ribbon could do with a slight reflection, too; and the letters on the cut piece of cake nearest us are smaller than those on the cake itself - but as it's actually slightly closer to us, they should be larger. Otherwise - a beautiful job! China's cake is not being sliced, but flying off into chunks. I think you need to take a longer time on this one! A novel approach from color, with icons from all the CS4 applications - as well as a few other Adobe products for good measure. I really like the way the cake has been placed inside the glass apple: those air bubbles really make it sit inside the object. Nicely done. Here's to the next 20 years! |

Sorry Steve, I used my archive PSD challenge 241 Familly resemblances. This is the ribbon that gave me the idea of a hat and who better to "The Man" I mean "The Maester" to put under the hat. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 289: Happy Birthday, Photoshop
Thanks Steve Not sure about lighting variation. The cake looks like it's been lit with flash head on to the corner, so my thought was that the cut section would be lit evenly. Nick |

Re: Challenge 289: Happy Birthday, Photoshop
Thanks Steve, I do have my tablet on the side, but I didn't want the image too wide. I also had to place the hand later, the stapler just happened to be there, I was going to PS it out, but decided it would be easier to leave it. Believe me, there are a lot of other things on my desk you don't see. I clear cut the computer and put a clean table under it. Easier than cleaning my computer table. The view is real (from my desk), but photographed separate. You may recognize the lamp post. Have a good weekend. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Challenge 289: Happy Birthday, Photoshop
Many thanks Steve. I must admit I cheated as well! Took a photo of the piece of cake, then ate some of it and then photographed it again. A lot easier than doing it in photoshop! Thanks for last week's comment which I haven't replied to. It did take hours, and hours. |
