Reminds me of that episode of Dr. Who, only thing that's missing is a zip on the cloak that is Nick Clegg. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 297: Nick Clegg's makeover
This week kicked off with an ingenious animation from maiden, showing the three party leaders jostling for position in a road race. The back-and-forth nudging is appealing, but it's the endlessly scrolling trees that really bring interest to this one - as well as the slightly offset view of the road, which prevents the whole scene from being too symmetrical. The end result is an animation that loops endlessly and seamlessly - clever stuff! And I like the superhero approach in the second entry - you know, "Nick Awesome" might just catch on... An interesting take from Jono - Clegg unshaven, with an eye patch, and wearing an ink-spattered shirt. Well, it might just pick up the floating pirate vote, but I'm not sure that's enough to get him into power! Glegg as Gandhi - that's the approach taken by Ben Mills, and it's certainly one way of bringing yourself to the public's attention (although he might have to modify his clothing for the British weather). A good placement in front of 10 Downing Street, but what's happened to his face? Use Curves to add tone to it - and, while you're at it, make it a touch larger to fit that body. An intriguing morphing of Clegg into Baby Bear from Josephine Harvatt - a really cute idea, but I'm not sure there's enough Clegg left to make him recognisable! Perhaps the choice of the bear's nose over Clegg's was a feature too far? A fine new body from tomiloi, with a head that fits the body perfectly - great blending. The head needs a little Unsharp Mask to make it as crisp as the body, though, and we could do with a little smudging of the hair to make it look more natural. And don't forget to get rid of the hair from the original model, which is poking out of the top. Alternately amused and horrified by Deborah Morley's view of Clegg as Margaret Thatcher… a remarkably good piece of blending. The only thing is, the head's at a stronger angle than the face: rotate the face about 10 degrees clockwise for a better fit. A subtle and clever modification of a Raphael painting from brewell, with Clegg in the middle, flanked by Brown and Cameron on either side. It's hard finding decent profiles of politicians and celebrities, so you did well to dig out such effective ones - and the expression on Cameron's face is perfect. Great work. A Clegg foursome from Eva Roth, showing him as a slick businessman, a chef, a guitarist and - ingeniously - a rather convincing rasta. Now there's a man who can't make his mind up! Excellent head fitting in each case: but putting all of them together in one image would have really made it work for me. Sheer genius from tooquilos, with Clegg appearing as a range of world leaders - including Kim Jong Il, Chairman Mao, Gandhi, the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa - before turning into Barack Obama and finally into a rather cute parody of himself, with check shirt and white suit. It's all done with tremendous skill and attention to detail - the subtlest of transformations. Terrific. One way to appeal to the voters: Steve Hill makes a welcome return to the Friday Challenge with Clegg as Bond. A good choice of pose and expression, but the skin tones need to be addressed to match the rest of the image: less saturation, more contrast needed here. I liked vibeke's vision of Clegg in a white suit surrounded by doves - a good take. But the thing about suits is, you can't simply invert a dark jacket to get a white jacket, because then the shadows (under the lapel, in the creases) are brighter than the rest of the suit, rather than darker. On the other hand, it's surprising how much you can brighten a dark suit simply using Curves, which preserves the balance between highlight and shadow. (Correction: I just tried it on the original photo you supplied, and the level of jpeg compression made the Curves approach unworkable for this image.) A shiny election poster from Nick Curtain, with a Lib Dem branded piggy bank. I like the subtle lines of the sheets in the poster, but the concept is a bit too subtle for me… oh, I forgot you worked in a bank, Nick! A great Dr Strangelove reference from Big Vern - and I do like the way he's riding the bomb backwards. Just a couple of points: it looks like you're used the Shear filter to bend the graphics around the bomb, but the lines need to be much closer to parallel to the sides right at the edges of the bomb, or the effect is to flatten it out somewhat. And, er, his left arm seems to be significantly longer than it should be! American Idol gets a new lead presenter in jwhite's entry - and Clegg does fill Simon Cowell's T-shirt rather well. But is his face too large for the head? There's a slight awkwardness on the right, where the jaw seems to have been truncated… when in doubt, keep them symmetrical. I like Eggbox's idea of Clegg as a clown - but the trouble with Clegg is, he's so hard to recognise when his features are messed about with! I'm guessing he's the one on the left - but that's only because TinEye managed to find the original pic for me. Clegg is rather neatly inserted into Frank Dicksee's painting The Two Crowns (thanks again, TinEye) in michael sinclair's entry - I especially like the side lighting, and the painterly feel. But a few other political figures could surely have been added into the background? An interesting take in the game-inspired second entry - especially the Lib Dem branded headgear. Just one thing about the setting: with windows on both sides, it's unlikely we'd get a single shadow from the front. A clever scratch'n'sniff entry from Josephine Harvatt (well, scratch, anyway): a neat interpretation of the adage. It's a subtle piece of work, which nonetheless produces a somewhat startling image. I'm not sure it would make me vote for either of them! A remarkable entry from Jota120, with Clegg transformed into a cross between Edward Scissorhands and The Joker… that pale skin and toneless makeup are truly startling. A rather tricky opened mouth - I know how difficult it is to do this successfully - but I'm not sure I get the point of the headline, Trevor. A striking and very appealing entry from LonnieK, with Clegg casually sprawling on the beach in front of a seriously cool car (do they really make them with transparent doors like that?) and a casual jacket and T-shirt. Have to take issue with you on the guitar, though - surely Paul McCartney would have a left-handed Gibson? Clegg makes the cover of Time, or so nerdtron would have it - and why not. I like the white text with the hard drop shadows for the subheads, but you can't open quotation marks for the main headline and then not close them! And, er, are you sure the White House is really the best background for Clegg? A clever entry from salfordnurse - I like the way Clegg is being split open here, and taking the eyes and mouth out was a clever way to suggest this is a real mask. Just a couple of things: if the hand is going to pull on a zipper, then we really need to see the zip tracks all the way up the head; and adding a little interior mask behind the new head would add a little extra to the realism. Oh, and, er, what's happened to that hand? I like the addition of shadows in the second entry, but perhaps they're a touch too strong. Somewhere between the two would work well. A great animation from james, showing Clegg as a court jester - racing towards the viewer, before being knocked out by the House of Commons Mace (although, oddly, this one seems to have acquired a sharpened end - for sticking into soft grass, or soft politicians?). I particularly like the way you've flipped the body without flipping the head, which would have made the lighting go all wrong - and, indeed, without flipping the colours on the tunic. Dashed clever, James! "Think about voting for a hero", says laddition… but I'm not sure Clegg really suggests superhero status, more the ordinary man in the street. A fine treatment of the flag, and most interesting to see you and maiden both using the same body! Only one thing: is Clegg's head too far to the left? It looks like it might fall off. Good work this week. I'll send a link to party headquarters - you never know what they might think. |

Re: Challenge 297: Nick Clegg's makeover
Thanks Steve There is a slightly younger Nick Clegg in the poster, on which I was making a perhaps too subtle reference to the recent news attention that donations had passed through his private accounts. The Lib Dem slogan on their website is 'Change that works for you'. Nick |

Re: Challenge 297: Nick Clegg's makeover
Thanks Steve I didn't think the bear/face worked either - shades of "The Singing Ringing Tree" (although I am sure everyone will be too young to remember that little gem ...) Never mind, I was happier with the second entry: it was quite startling how similar the two men looked, it was hard to see where one began and the other ended ! _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Re: Challenge 297: Nick Clegg's makeover
Sadly I can and what a creepy badly put together effort it was too. I still cannot believe that it was designed for childrens television and there must have been many sleepless nights as a result. I saw an extract from an epidode recently and must admit it did take me back. Blue Peter was a much better alternative! |
