I find it funny how they mentioned Nick Clegg having a make-over last week. Boy, that was fun!

You are all great. I'm stuck in Gatwick airport thanks to ash cloud. Aerlingus can fly (but I don't wan't to pay £255 rtn flight) but Ryanair can't be bothered., can't be bothered to even send me an email, or txt....send all the staff home to save them some money...... The skies are clear into Cork...... And I did assert myself nicely ..... I think they want me to walk back ......

I'm sorry. I tried to get a smile, I really tried. God knows I tried. But I just couldn't cheer any of them up. Even Alistair couldn't raise a titter with his tickling stick.

I give up, I can not get a good laugh from him. This has all been done using only the original photo.

Thanks Pete,
I know it's a little off-brief but I found the clown picture while I was looking for something else and the idea just jumped into my head and refused to go until I had finished the image.

Sorry I can't make our PM more sincere. Maybe we'll see a different face of Mr. Brown tomorrow!

Well I ain't no expert on faces, but I think it's a combination of the bottom lip being a bit too big and narrow down, and the eyes being too squinted, but I know how hard it is to open up closed eyes to an extend.. So without being able to do the eyes with Liquify, I'd say he'd only look like a drug user with the thinning of the bottom lip.

However, someone posted a picture of Steve demonstrating how to do this challenge, and the eyes looked rather convincing, I think emulating those eyes might work.

I'm not trying to be a critique, honest!

Re: Challenge 298: Make him laugh
Well, it's early morning here in the UK and we still have no idea who the next Prime Minister is going to be. As I write, the Conservatives need to win 41 out of the 55 seats remaining to declare in order to have a majority to form a government. Looks like we're heading for a hung parliament.

But back the the Challenge:

First to place his vote was Pete, with a cheery grin and good eye action - I like the laugh lines, and the raised eyebrows. Do the cheeks look a little flattened, though? A fine Guardian front page, but when you use a PDF note that the printing instructions - including the CMYK wording and the issue number - should really be cropped off the top!

I liked Ben Mills’s Clown Brown, although the heavy plaster texture seems a little on the rough side. A good nose, which really helps, but when you paint the eye decoration it’s a mistake to make any of the lines vertical: this produces too graphic a result, and we need a more naturalistic appearance.

Clever work from gaoxiguo, with a very fine smile - and, thanks to the reflecting lenses, we can see who he’s smiling at. The glasses seem to be a little too far to the side, though: the indentation should line up exactly with the nose, don’t you think?

Very convincing work from Nick Curtain, whose Brown has convincing smiling eyes and a great mouth (if, perhaps, a touch on the small side). It’s a seamless piece of work, which of course makes it all the more convincing. And I really liked the Meaning of Life reference in the second entry - Mr Creosote is certainly a figure for our times. Cute wafer. And good to see the Foyles shot cropping up in the third entry!

A cracked-up Brown is ably sewn back together by tooquilos - great stitching, and a great series of cracks! And it’s good to see the effect building up in the animated version: the Sky TV recording over the end is perfect!

There’s a definite gleam in the eye in Babybiker’s entry, although the eye shadow is a bit heavy for my taste. With an original image that’s shot slightly from the side - note the angle of the nose - we need to distort the mouth to match, otherwise it looks as if it belongs in another photograph. Image Warp is probably the best tool to use for this job.

A hugely appealing laugh from LonnieK , with perfect eyes and an impressively distorted jaw. The mouth is from just the right angle, too, and I like the improved dentistry. But the mouth remains just on the small side: enlarge it about 20% and it should fit the face even better.

Dodge and Burn proved to be the technique chosen by brewell (and thanks for the instructional image as well). It’s a good effect, adding laughter lines around the eyes and fuller cheeks. I think using a larger brush in Liquify might create smoother results - and do make the mouth line up with the nose!

Not exactly a smile, but there’s certainly a change of expression from Jono! Some truly grisly under-skin action going on there as well, but I’m surprised it’s blue... scratch a Labour PM and find a Tory? Certainly, this is a unique approach!

Amazingly good work from Wayne Morton: the new face (where on earth did you fine a shot of Brown smiling?) is perfectly integrated into the original image. And the second entry, using only the current image, is a very strong piece of work (even if Brown does seem to have turned somewhat oriental). The crook in the third entry (that’s the blue crook, mind) is a great addition! Wayne, I can’t believe you don’t have a custom title yet... I think it has to be Master Blender for this image. Great stuff.

I like tomiloi’s new features, with a good mouth (and surprisingly white teeth). But your girlfriend may be right - he does look as if he has other things on his mind!

All the elements are in place in Josephine Harvatt’s entry - and the lines around the eyes work well. But the mouth seems to be a different colour to the rest of the face - or does he just need a shave? Oh, and watch that hard edge on the right side of the eyes...

An, er, interesting approach from michael sinclair: are you sure Puppet Warp is the right tool to use here? Much as I wholeheartedly recommend it for cutout images (and I cover it in depth in the next edition of the book, I’m note sure it works so well on faces. But if you do choose this approach, remember - Gordon Brown has only two ears, not three!

A thoughtful image from Carlo Alessandro Della Valle, with Brown not so much grinning as gazing aimlessly into space. The slight upturn on the mouth works well, but I think you could have taken it quite a lot further in terms of turning the corners up. He certainly looks better than he did before, though.

Well, we certainly have a more cheerful expression from Eva Roth - but this is Brown via Braque, isn’t it? The face seems to be looking in a rather different direction to the head. Flip the new features horizontally, and at least the nose will be pointing in the right direction!

A clever piece of work from maiden - although I’ve been watching it for hours now waiting for it to move. A good fit on the head, but shouldn’t his hair be hanging down?

A cheerful grin from nerdtron, with good eye wrinkles, and a passable mouth - but lift it up, and make it a little larger. Best of all is the ingenious second entry, reworking the BBC News website: convincing work! And I like the reference to last week’s Challenge in here.

Clever and detailed work from GKB, with Mandelson, Darling and Brown all neatly done up as clowns - and a fantastic fit for all three. Curiously, Brown is the only one here I had trouble recognising. I like all the extra detail in the badges and the banners - and Mandelson’s expression is priceless. There’s an interesting combination of body parts in the second entry, but I’m not entirely sure they all go together: is it partly a question of relative scale?

Well, James’ animation starts off in a straightforward enough manner, with Brown morphing gradually into his smiling version - and very good to see the slow transition. But then he turns into the politician from hell (or, at least, from Vulcan). Crumbs! Has he been at your mushrooms, James?

A valiant attempt from vibeke, using only the starting image. Actually, it works rather well: there’s a definite cheeriness that wasn’t there before, and the added laughter lines really help the expression. Maybe lifting the eyebrows a little would help?

A definite smile from laddition, with a new pair of eyes to match. He does look a little as if his body parts don’t quite fit together: the eyes are too small, and the mouth is at a slightly awkward angle. But he certainly looks better than he did before.

Not just a smile, but a heart tattoo from Jota120: certainly a smile, of sorts, but why the blue eye shadow? Is that a result of not having your tablet with you?

Not really a smile from Eggbox, more of a pained wince... and the eyes look as if someone’s been punching him (probably the Labour voters). Interesting, though: in terms of expression, pain and pleasure are strikingly similar.

This has been a very difficult Challenge, as many of you found, but it has produced some very strong work. I think it has made us all realise how hard it is to achieve subtlety of expression. Congratulations to all who entered.

Thanks Steve,
I also have difficulty recognising him but it really is a straight lift from the original image. I think that it may be because the character in the original clown image had a rather thick neck. Blending GB’s head in with this neck may have caused an apparent change to the rest of his face. That’s the only explanation I can think of………well, that and his new nose!
