Re: Challenge 315: The cathedral
First to pour the concrete this week was GKB - literally so, in his case, with a celestial cement mixer gushing the stuff down from the heavens, with some help from Michelangelo. Inspired work, Gordon - and a particularly fine angel.

Very clever work from scoobyclub, with a Starbucks atop the cathedral. I like the way you've built the balustrade, but the top of the building is cut off in a rather harsh line: it needs to follow the contours of the building's shape for a more convincing effect. A good stab at the perspective!

Excellent grafting of a medieval cathedral onto the top of the church from tomiloi - the colour is a perfect match. That sky, though, has been photographed straight up: in real life, the clouds get smaller as they approach the horizon. Very, very neat work in the second entry - a great reflection! But is it a little too low?

I see Nick Curtain has been doing some Googling - a very clever approach. Creative cheating, eh?

A perfect match from tooquilos - just a little difficulty terminating the verticals on the original building. Perhaps you could borrow a couple of those turrets? I enjoyed the animated "making of" video!

Very clever work from Stefano Giacomuzzi, whose cathedral soars into the sky endlessly. Immaculate extension of all the parts, and I really like the way the sky graduates into stars. There's a rather harsh line in the sky about half way up, but otherwise this is really good work. Certainly enough to earn you a title, Stefano - I think Modernist Maestro is the right choice here. Well done!

A neatly finished flat roof from gaoxiguo, perfectly completed in the style of the original. And I like the new sky here - good work.

An inspired topping from brewell, extending the style of the building in a sympathetic and imaginative way. I assume the watercolor treatment is to mask the joins: but does it help? A great sign, too!

Another endless tower, this time from LonnieK, whose cathedral reaches up and disappears into the clouds. I like the extra touches of the lightning and the hint of a rainbow, and the cathedral itself is perfectly extended. Great work.

A magnificent foliated outpouring from Josephine Harvatt, with a topping that Gaudi would have appreciated. It does seem to grow organically from the building, but surely the very top should be brighter, not darker?

A classic topping from Ben Mills, the first this week to feature a crucifix on the roof. A good piece of extension, Ben, but watch out for the smudging at some of the joins. Good choice of new sky.

I really like Sophie's idea of someone building the cathedral as a sand castle - and it does very nearly work. What would have helped greatly would be to soften the top, to make it look more unfinished - and perhaps to add a shadow of the woman onto the side?

More surrealism from Les Moore, with a steam-powered building surrounded by nightmare visions. The really clever part here was unifying all these elements into a fluent montage: it's partly the colour choice, and partly the lighting, that makes everything work so well together. Beautiful, Les.

I like PDelavigne's idea of placing the organ on the roof - the wooden structure holds it neatly in place. The outer band, though, could do with some of the concrete texture on it - fairly easy to copy this from the original image. Good work, Paulo.

Fantastic work from Carlo Alessandro Della Valle - getting a photograph of the Rio statue from exactly the right angle (and lighting direction) really makes this image work perfectly. A terrific extension, too, making the whole thing into a really convincing image. Excellent.

A neat if rather squat spire from james - and I really like the addition of the stained glass windows at the bottom. I enjoyed the animated version, with excellent movement of the parachutists - the walking of the one on the roof is immaculate.

I takes a particular kind of mind to look at a cathedral and think "what that really needs is an oversized leopard on the top". That mind, of course, belongs to Jota120. Enough said. Rather a touching second entry, though - but we need a steeper angle on the angel.

Despite that michael sinclair clearly is no fan of modernist architecture, he's produced a very attractive image - relocating the cathedral to a lonely moor in the process. A good firing rocket in the second image, with an only partially convincing explosion in the third; and while it's entirely consumed by flame in the fourth, shouldn't we at least be able to see a few flying lumps of masonry?

I like vibeke's classical topping-off, but have a few concerns about the angles: the front of the original building is clearly facing at 90 degrees to the side, but yours seems to be at a rather different angle. Tricky stuff, perspective!

A glorious baroque folly from Eva Roth, and the vine is a good solution to the problem of the balcony. My main issue, though, is that your balcony is facing in a different direction to the rest of the church... unless we assume there's a matching one on the other side!

Would that be the dome of St Paul's Cathedral popping up in Deborah Morley's entry? It's certainly a good fit. And I really, really like the way you've finished off the original roof, with a pediment that looks perfectly cast out of the original concrete. Not feeling inspirational? But very good work, nonetheless.

An interesting idea from laddition, finishing the building with a classica French church. I like the way the stone texture comes down the side, but is it all too far to the right? A great sky, I like the lightning.

I don't know if Emil Googled the original cathedral, but what he's produced is a very close match. This building soars towards the sky, with a subtle curve at the top and a perfectly stained crucifix attached to it. Highly convincing, detailed work - excellent, Emil.

So here's the original building. It's magnificent and awe-inspiring, despite being made of concrete: as the tallest building in the town of Royan, it stands out for miles around. You can see more images, including of the stunning interior, here.

Thanks Steve!

I get hooked on trying to fix one tricky spot to make it convincing only to find I have been blind to the most obvious additions to complete the effect. Just got to remember it now!

Re: Challenge 315: The cathedral
Very kind Steve - I got into a right muddle with it - I thought the top should be darker because of seeing it against the sky and by the time I had realised that didn't work I had tinkered around so much that I had given up the will to live - file it under "execution not living up to the concept" I think

Thanks Steve, you are quite right, I knew what was wrong, but ran out of time (and skill) to fix it.

I just did it because I liked it - no shortcuts

Maybe:
"....let us prey .. ", subjunctified maybe by the image that followed..... "....let us pray" ...
Sorry about that...
Thanks again Steve, bit rusty on my part after break
