Re: Challenge 327: Will & Kate
Thats very ingenious Daniel! In my case it was a case of trial and error and experimenting with blending modes. Selected the hat and placed it on its own layer. Added a levels adjustment layer to brighten it up a bit – lighten as the blending mode Then a black and white adjustment layer and painted her face back on to retain the colour – screen as the blending mode Then a hue saturation adjustment layer knocking out some of the saturation – soft light as the blending mode New layer filled with white – opacity around 40pc – soft light as the blending mode Then it was just a matter of painting on the masks to reveal the feathers colour. A slight (1.5) Gaussian blur to the original hat layer. Ive reproduced it (very roughly) as I had merged the original psd. ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |

Thanks Anna … But your method is much more advanced, and it also has the major benefit of maintaining the pattern. Well done … What I am wondering about is whether this particular pattern (the Moiré pattern) is actually a part of the hat's texture or it is an artifact produced by the camera!

Interesting work Anna and Daniel, thanks for sharing. Also interesting question on Moiré pattern, it could be both(?). Reminds me of Bridget Riley's work. |

Thank you Anna for your tut. And Lo! the hat changed to white. Even though Kate now has a matching hat it is still a long way to the Abbey. Ted ![]() |

Re: Challenge 327: Will & Kate
Very much like the change Ted ![]() I tried a channel mask version, Gordon. Similar interest, Green Channel, worked best, but had to Multiply many times. I do not want to cover others' great solutions, so took it no further. In my view, I can give an answer to Daniel's question? its the construction of the hat. Its a spherical or conical mesh construction..... (Looks a bit like carbon fiber. I'm sure not, but the engineering is the same) My earlier contribution idea different ![]() Update: (saw after posted) Very nice Lonnie, great blending, and at least you have some sun ![]() Enjoying everyone's entries. |

Re: Challenge 327: Will & Kate
This proved to be a difficult Challenge - and yet it was solved with impressive ingenuity by all of you. First to cut the cake was Ben Mills, with a really clever solution. Laughed out loud over this one, Ben. But, er, why is her face so orange? A fun-packed entry from tooquilos, with a cardboard Prince Charles being inserted in the low-budget set. Plenty of detail here - the scratched Duke of Edinburgh portrait, the coat of arms (although I'm not sure whose) on the photographer's shirt, the general decrepit state of the wallpaper - very tasty. And I like the photographer's directions in the animated version! A very interesting entry from laddition, with suggests an old newspaper without exactly looking like one. I love the design of this, from the typography to the shape of the cutaway edges - and great bodies for W and K. Beautiful. A new member this week, and Puffin has joined in with a glorious beach sunset entry in the style of Jack Vettriano - a beautiful tone to this image, and very nicely composed. As first entries go, this is outstanding - welcome to the forum! A clever and intricate scene from Daniel, with Kate parading (neat new hat) in front of the wedding table. It's the scene behind the table that's so well composed: the grinning white-suited groom, the overdressed Prince Charles, and a fabulous thumbs-up from the Queen - all in front of a well-chosen portait of Elizabeth I. Excellent lighting, perfect composition: this is great work, Daniel, and certainly good enough to earn you an early title. So, let's see... for your main body of work, I think it has to be Poser Professor - partly because Associate Professor is too long to fit in. I like the second entry as well, but why is she such an odd colour? A great dress and hat from kitten, with a perfectly suitable body for William. He does seem rather large, though, in comparison: his arms are about four times as thick as hers. If you imagine where her knees would be in that dress, his should be about the same height. Good choice of background, though. The proportions do look better in the second entry - but I'll leave the matter of couture up to you! Neat work from GKB - but shouldn't she be wearing a white hat? A good setting, but as it happens I met the Archbishop of Canterbury last week and I'm sure he had a beard. And you do need to find a way to turn that hat round! I think this is the first time Lady Gaga has graced this site - and, as brewell would have it, she does make a rather good support stand. I like the way William's feet are balancing on her, and Kate's dress spills over the back. Good choice of clothes - slightly dodgy hat! The second entry is neater, though. A very well wrought solution to the hat problem by Josephine Harvatt, with the happy couple placed in a suburban tea dance - nice work! Perhaps a bit of mesh texture in the veil? Immaculate work from Jota120, but I did specifically request not to use different pictures of Kate - they're all so heavily copyrighted. Our second new member this week is odo, with a souvenir wedding mug - a good idea! But whose coat of arms is that? We need a unicorn as well as the lion! The second entry is very clever, particularly placing them on a teapot. But make them a little smaller, so their feet don't stick out of the bottom. Welcome to the forum, Odo. A very neat integration of Will and Kate into the shot of Obama from tissana - excellent placement. Just one problem: that's not William but his younger brother. A very tasteful entry from Eggbox - is that a real line of soldiers? What on earth were they doing there? Great body fitting. And the white hat in the second entry is a great improvement - many thanks to Anna and Daniel for the tutorials! A deceptively simple entry from LonnieK, depicting the happy couple in a reflective moment - but look how perfectly integrated into their surrounding they are, with delicate lighting and subtle shadows. My only problem here is that he's dressed for a wedding, but she conspicuously isn't... or are you getting political on us? Good work, everyone. |

Thanks Steve, you very kindly overlooked the issue of William's head which seems to be perched rather precariously on his collar ![]() _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Thanks Steve for the comments and, yes that is a real photo of real soldiers. Why they were there I don't know but it was a gift of inspiration. Congrats to Daniel for your title. Well deserved. Ted ![]() |
