Sorry Debbie, in response to your query yes I did once grow a beard but it was no more than a minor discolouration of the chin and the head of the house committee didn't like it. I did however grow a Viva Zapata mustach which lasted some years. Ted |

No time to post an online Christmas card, let alone let father Ted's beard grow... Merry Christmas to everyone from Eva! |

Re: Challenge 331: Father Ted
Plenty of exuberant entries this week - and some novel approaches to beard-building. First in was tomiloi, with a perfect hat (great shading, it fits really well) and an, er, interesting beard. I like the way the strands grow out of the face, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a beard in that shape! Matches the expression, though. More festive apparel from Sophie, with a beard that crawls convincingly down the cheeks, but then meanders sideways along the bottom of the chin - really? Don't beards grow down from the chin, rather than along it? Ted appears neatly slotted into a Japanese Christmas scene in gaoxiguo's entry - and he does fit well. It was supposed to be a beard made from his hair, though! Some clever work from kitten - I particularly like the refraction through the glasses, a very nice touch. The beard works well at the side of the face, and over the upper lip (remarkably well here, in fact); but in the main body of it, it appears to be growing sideways rather than downwards. A fine moustache and sideburns from Josephine Harvatt, and excellent attachment of the beard to the chin - very convincing. It all seems to turn to cotton wool at the sides, though - more smudge, less blur! I like the wintry scene in the second entry, but isn't that more Red Riding Hood than Santa? Delighted to see the moving lips and blinking eyes in the animated version - great phonemes! A very clever interpretation of Ted as Father Jack, from the British TV series Father Ted from Ocker - seamless blending with the original image here, a truly convincing piece of work. Excellent! A neat Christmas tag from puffin31939, with a rather full beard and nice bushy eyebrows. I like the way it's all been incorporated on the tag, with great lettering and a good ribbon. For greater effect, though, I'd have this hanging in front of a very out-of-focus Christmas background, rather than on a plain colour - it would give it more of a sense of place. As, indeed, does the second entry! A well crafted beard from Eggbox himself - interesting choice of necklace, Ted, it's not a style I'd have associated with you. The glasses are a great addition, but don't you think the shadow under the hat is a little strong? I laughed out loud at the second entry - great stuff! A chin-hugging beard from Ben Mills, with a very nicely swivelled pair of eyes - I like the fact that you've used his original irises. That's an interestingly two-dimensional reindeer you've got there - is that Chisel Hard as a bevel mode? It looks rather torn-out, a novel effect. A deceptively clever entry from sutex, who has worked Ted's face into an old Coke advertisement - and it's a fantastic piece of integration with the original, done with great subtlety and immaculate blending of tone and colour. Good work! I've heard of comb-overs, but Nick Curtain's beard turning into a hat takes the concept to extremes... you're not going to tell me that beard is made out of Ted's hair, though? To me, it screams polyester... There's a pantomime feeling to laddition's heavily made-up entry - or perhaps more reminiscent of the court of Louis XIV? A very neat little beard, and fabulous rouge effect! An entertaining little image from brewell, with Ted slotted into the Santa role - but who's the girl? Should I recognise her? There's a story behind this one... A striking image from tooquilos, with the names of dozens of forum members neatly written on Santa's list - how nicely personalised! I like the sign, but perhaps the base should be sunk into the snow a little way? A charming animated version, and thanks for the lovely message! A clearly handmade beard from Emvee, and the shape is great - I like the variation in tone that adds a three dimensional quality to it. Is the texture just too tight, though? Perhaps a few longer strands beneath the chin, to add variety? Good glasses: a touch of shadow beneath would sit them more closely onto the face. A very bristly beard from Deborah Morley, sprouting exuberantly on the upper lip - and there's enough variety in there for it to look convincing. Nice work, Deborah! I don't know how LonnieK manages to bring such an ethereal look to all his images - is there a custom Lonnie K filter we don't know about? A beautiful shot, with a fantastic tone to the skin and, of course, an immaculately built beard and moustache. And the attention to detail is superb, too, from the feathering of the edge of the hat to the reflection in the glasses... beautiful! A full beard and glasses from Garfield72. Apart from the fact that the beard was supposed to be built from Ted's hair, don't you think it's a little too neat around the mouth? Use the Smudge tool to pull out a few short strands, smudging away from the lips. A magnificent beard from Jota120, made entirely from Ted's hair - excellent. Perhaps it could be brightened up in places, to give it more of that Santa snowiness? A rather glorious beard from Emil - I like the elongation of the strands beneath the chin. It fits his face perfectly. When you smudge the hat down over the forehead, though, it can help to then lock the transparency and clone some of the original texture over the smudges - stops them looking overly smooth. A special thanks to Ted for, once again, agreeing to be our model for this week's Challenge - we appreciate it greatly! |

Re: Challenge 331: Father Ted
Thanks Steve Time was very short last weekend, so improvisation came into play. We have a Santa with real polyester beard, which sits under the stairs and who better to use as a base when a cheater is looking for a cheat. Great entries from everyone and my best wishes to all this Christmas. Thanks again Steve for making this forum such an enjoyable place to be. Nick ![]() |

Thank you Steve, good note about the smoothed places on hat. I used your advise and it worked perfectly. Have a nice Christmas and Happy New Year. _________________ The most beatiful thing we can experience is mysterious. It is the source of all true art and sience. - Albert Einstein |

Re: Challenge 331: Father Ted
The girl is just an attitude picture so I could depict the end of the age of innocence (you know how I like to go after the Big Themes). The real story is the beard. The red part I immediately recognized as great mustachio material. The blue part was for the side whiskers. A few more copies to cover the chin, a bit of mask-blending, a levels adjustment and desaturation to give it the proper department store quality, and voila. I'm going to believe that you didn't mention it because you thought I cheated. ![]() B'e Well. ![]() _________________ Onward and upward! Excelsior! |

Thank you very much for the compliment, Steve. "A custom LonnieK filter we don't know about?" Alas, no -- just normal built-in Photoshop tools. Have a great Holiday. _________________ Lonnie |

Re: Challenge 331: Father Ted
There is the one inspired me- colors, texture and old coke-estetic as you said .Happy for your comment as mind come true then. But it is sad Christmas story in it about millions of cans of Coke use this time to mix with vodka...I don't know how others can see that or its just my mind opinion... I mix vodka with gherkins 8)Anyway thank you for your tips given on 'heads and bodies' in your book CS3, this help me to make Ted's face an American Dream Santa. Thanks to Ted for this wide open eyes easy to work on afterwards.MARRY CHRISTMAS & RICH SANTA! ![]() |
