Re: Challenge 332: Make it snow, part 5
Hello, I was not happy with my first image, so as there is no challenge this week, I made a new image. But I am not yet satisfied with the overall light of my image. Which technique is best to change the lighting? Thank you ![]() |

Hi Garfield, I love you image. Try the Lighting Effects filter set to Omni (not spotlight). Intensity slider about 22. Drag the outer nodes out as far as possible and place the centre node around the lower middle. It's a solution though I'm sure there are many others. Deborah, love your entry. |

Re: Challenge 332: Make it snow, part 5
Hello, and happy new year to you all. Good to be back after the extended break. First to tackle the snow was Stefano Giacomuzzi, with good drifts on the ledges - I really like the way they're piled up here - and great falling snow. I especially like the two levels of focus here. The snowman, though, looks rather artificial: try softening the edges, particularly between the middle and lower balls. And do you think those lit windows are just a little too acid yellow? Very tasteful work from Nick Curtain, with good falling snow and a nicely lit window. Very good lighting, especially within the lamp. But no snowman? Bah humbug! A fantastic ghostly image from brewell, the distortion through the figure producing an eerie sense of winter being dragged over the scene... a very powerful effect. I like this a lot. Having watched (and thoroughly enjoyed) the Dr Who special this Christmas, I found Josephine Harvatt's entry remarkably apt, and beautifully achieved. The only think I find a little awkward here is the way all the characters are standing in a line, without interacting with each other - but then I realise you must have had limited original material at your disposal. Great shark, neatly illuminated by the sonic screwdriver! An entertaining snow scene from puffin31939, with good snow and a very cute snowman. I think part of the issue here is that the colour of the scene still makes it look as if it's mid summer: you need to add a blue tint to get the full winter effect, which will also throw those lit windows into stronger relief. I like the second entry, with the added figure - a good splash of colour. A great added tree, as well. Hope you're enjoying the Photoshop upgrade: there's some truly fantastic new stuff for you to get to grips with. Always good to start the year with a new member, and emanuellefrau has added some excellent snow - complete with flying skier. A great touch! I like the blueness of the scene, but a couple of points of light - perhaps in the lantern, or the windows - would have added some much-needed warmth back in. Welcome to the forum, Emanuele! Not so much drifting snow as sleeting rain from xboxmaniac: that really is a miserable storm! I like the lying snow, though, especially the way it subtly reaches just a little way beneath the arch. Again, adding a few touches of light would have given this scene a bit of a lift. Beautiful work from LonnieK, with a dazzling Bugnotti that's clearly just reversed (judging from the tracks) into the archway. I love the decorations, especially the twinkly icicle-style lights: and adding that fir tree in the foreground gives a great sense of depth. The footsteps, leading away from the car, are a neat touch. The ice car in the second entry is fantastic: the distortion through the ice works amazingly well. A charming scene from tooquilos, complete with ice sculpture - although it should perhaps refract the view seen through it. And that goes for the ice block in the animated version - it's cute, though, when the ice swan turns into a real swan. And, of course, the Tchaikovsky is perfect. A very joyful snowman from laddition, nicely made - and I like the fact that the lighting all appears to come from the lantern. Who is the figure under the arch? Why is he so large, and why no shoes? There's a better way to draw snowflakes: I must remember to do a tutorial on it in the next edition. A very sculptural ice sculpture from Garfield72, with lightly falling snow and some good settling on the ledges. Both the tree and the sculpture, though, really need shadows on the ground - especially since the snow sculpture has such strong shadows on it already. I like the Disney coach in the second entry, with the subtle refraction through it. As for the lighting: well, try adding some light in the windows and the lantern, to provide more focal points. Just the two reindeer for GKB, but since the sleigh is rather on the small side maybe that doesn't matter. It appears to have supplementary power in the form of a fire extinguisher and a Creme Egg. And is that Mrs Santa carrying a bucket of coal? Nice lighting, especially on the sign. A rather scary snowman from Sophie - still, at least the car isn't too put out. I've been trying to decipher the figure peeking out from the archway - is it a dog? Nice snow, with especially good footprints. Very fine work from sutex, with a queue of people perfectly matching the perspective of the original image (although I do wonder if they're all just a touch too small). I like the fact that you've added reflections in the wet surface, and the photo's border and shadow: seamless, highly accomplished work. Good stuff! Very funny work from James, with Bugs Bunny stealing the snowman's carrot - clever work! I like the way the snow builds up on the hat and scarf, and the row of rabbit footprints. Very nicely achieved. A rather sinister Santa from Emil, with beautiful lighting - the way the snow is caught in the lantern's glow is excellent, and there's just the right balance between the blue of the scene and the subtle yellow of the lighting. A very fine composition. Very entertained by Jota120's mountain climbers taking on the palace - and yes, there really was a lot of snow in London this Christmas. Great snow drift, too, right up against the walls. But shouldn't the climbers have left footprints? A wonderful second entry, though, with the alley turned into an archway to a garden: beautiful composition, fantastic trees, a really ingenious approach. It may have snowed, but it's still a sunny day in Vibeke's entry - but maybe that's just the New Zealand way. I like the two figures, but footprints are needed! Hope you get your internet connection back soon - but then you're probably wintering in Singapore or somewhere equally exotic. Or summering, as the case may be. I've been trying to work out how Deborah Morley managed to place that frosty tree in the foreground. Either it's a real tree, in which case the cutout would be impossible, or the hoar frost is drawn, which is also almost impossible. Interesting puzzle! Slightly confused by the shadows coming both from the tree towards the railings, and from the railings towards the tree... and who's the mystery figure in the window? Beautiful work from all. |

Re: Challenge 332: Make it snow, part 5
The tree was real and shot against a dull grey sky! I eventually figured a way (sort of) to cut it out; even Channels were no good. Re the shadows, I figured moonlight on the tree and light from the window and lamp? Sophie and Stefano many thanks for your comments. |

Re: Challenge 332: Make it snow, part 5
Thank you Steve, yes the figures had to be lifted straight from promotional material (along with the ground and the snowman) as the best of an unsuitable bunch but I hit lucky with finding a good shark image _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Thanks, Steve. I hadn't thought about the colour of the light until my second attempt. Yes, there is an awful lot for me to learn in CS5. And I can't even say I know CS2 properly yet! I am revisiting the bits of Cheat CS4 to practice the examples I couldn't do in CS2. It'll keep me happy for hours! _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |
