Re: Challenge 336: Human Services
Some very inventive work this week - looks like you've all had fun with this one.

First off was laddition, with a clever off-world entry featuring a very cheerful Klingon. I like the lettering, and the space feel of this one: that globe light should have been turned on, though.

Subtle work from Dejá_vu, with a neatly altered set of lettering - I really like the stains dripping down from it. But look more closely, and you'll find all sorts of other additions, such as the repeated caduceus symbol carved into the stone, and etched onto the glass (as well as painted on the ground). Best of all, though, is the swapping of the lamp globe for a parrot. That must have been tricky!

A new member this week - and 2tonezack has Lindsay Lohan carrying a month's supply of methadone. The new lettering is a good attempt, but you might have got a close match by piecing it together from the letters already there. Also, you need to tone down her saturation: she jumps out from the blue cast of the background, which makes her look somewhat out of place. Welcome to the forum, Zack! (Your avatar reminds me of a cartoon I once saw... man goes up to attendant in record store, and says "is this the way to the Ska section?" And the attendant replies: "No! That way Madness lies!")

Rather beautiful work from bjansen, with another science fiction theme - this time with a Star Wars feel. I like the new gates, and the strong background buildings, but a couple of things concern me here. First, if Yoda is casting such a strong shadow, shouldn't he be sitting in an equally strong shadow cast by the wall? And you need to watch where you've removed the lamp on the right - that plinth looks rather unfinished as it stands.

Immaculate lettering from brewell, with a set of Tea Party activists gathering in protest. A good assortment of people, but you do need to make adjustments when photographs are taken close-up with a wide-angle lens. That accounts for the distorted feet on the musicians, which are clearly being viewed from above. Easy to reshape these feet, to match the perspective of the scene (and their distance from the viewer).

Rather clever work from puffin31939, with new engraved lettering, and a new tree across the wall. I like the ghost, who has a decidedly ghostly feel to him - and the skull on top of the cage. Changing the sphere to orange very nearly makes it into a Halloween pumpkin, but not quite - a little more texturing needed on that surface. Should I know who Muggs is?

A rather fine paint job from Nick Curtain, as befits the headquarters of a leading paint company. The dog, by the way, used to figure prominently in Dulux advertising, although no-one really knows why. All that paint, and not a single drip!

A fairy fantasy from LonnieK, with the building once again given that trademark LonnieK warm glow. A great sense of perspective on the sprites, although the shadows are somewhat erratic. I like the new background, but could a tree that's clearly planted some distance from the building have branches that hang in front of it?

A great retro image from Josephine Harvatt, with a host of references - there's the American Werewolf, Uncle Fester, and the chap in the cage whose name momentarily escapes me. I like the extra sign on the wall, and the face looking through the window. And a great address!

A wordy approach from tooquilos, with the Scrabble headquarters having very appropriate signage. I like the S in the globe! A couple of things: the shadows of the letters should be only on the wooden tray, not the wall behind; and you need to have another tinker with the board in the background, to make it align with the perspective of the wall. Shouldn't the man be holding one of the letter tiles? I like the misspelling in the animated version!

A nice gag from Eggbox, with a clearly stumped planning office. The remaining letters on the ground, waiting to be put up, tell the story well, and I like the way the A appears to be hanging on the L. Is the man with the camera necessary? He does seem rather a distraction to me.

A very animal-rich entry from emanuelefrau, with perfect positioning of the animals - and I especially like the fish in the bowl, the hawk standing on top of the cage, and the monkey carrying the torch. Very neat new lettering, as well, clearly pieced together from the existing words. Best of all, for me, are the wildly inappropriate deer heads mounted either side of the sign - a beautiful touch. Great work!

Entertained by Ben Mills' subtle entry - not only is Denver a mile up in the air, it's also several hundred miles from the sea. No wonder the surfer looks so dry. I like the icon on the globe!

There's loads going on in vibeke's Diet Services building, from discarded junk food to ice-cream-guzzling seniors. I like the torn McDonalds poster on the wall, and the woman on the far right who wants nothing to do with it. A great watermelon! And a very tidily rearranged set of lettering. Nice work, Vibeke.

Tomiloi may not have had time for people, but the new Chinese lettering has been created as a perfect match for the existing words. Sadly, this isn't a piece of text I can run past Google Translate... anyone able to read this? Trevor?

I always find I have to watch James's animations over and over, to be sure I've spotted everything. There's always so much attention to detail: the interior of the building, the texture of the glass and the reversing of the signs as both doors are opened, the fantastic human and animal movement... and I keep watching to try to work out what the man at the end is holding in those twitching fingers. And, of course, a neat rebuilding of the sign. Fantastic work, James! Got that iMac yet?

An interesting set of CCTV footage from sutex, with very nice styling. Beware of adding solid black elements, though, as the darkest colour is deep brown when viewed on your monitors: the colouring makes the grim reaper look out of place. I like the TV lines and the ghosting effect - Eye Candy? Or all hand made?

The building is very neatly transformed into an art gallery in Jota120's entry - and that's a rather remarkable eagle sculpture you have there. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with CS5 - a PC problem? Or one we can help with? Sorry to lose the eagle in the second entry, I'd got to rather like it...

I like all the elements in Garfield72's entry, but I'm having some trouble linking them all together... the soldier and the signage work OK, but who's the guy in traditional dress? And is that his wheelchair? Or is he supposed to be wearing a hospital gown? I like the new globe, though!

Our second new member this week is tuffpup, whose Hybrid services building attracts an interesting range of clientele! The two half-human figures entering the building have been perfectly put together, with animal heads carefully chosen to match the angle of view of the bodies - and I like the careful use of image grain to tie all the elements together. A terrific first entry, Alec - and welcome to the forum!

Good work, everyone.

Re: Challenge 336: Human Services
Thanks Steve for spotting. Colors may vary cause to my monitor calibration or...??? don't know.Sometimes when I do solid black in PS and got it to website its not-solid black. For the grim reaper effect I used mix of hood and genuine X-ray scan of my brother's head(any skull inverted should do as well) plus Halftone Pattern and Noise blended.Use to told my bro he looks 'out of this world' ha ha.That's mix of Lars von Trier 'Kingdom' hospital and japanese ghosts style.

Ben , thanks for your effort.

Thanks, Steve. MUGGS - Ministry of UFOs, Ghosts & GhoulS! Never thought of texturing the orange globe - I was just pleased to fit it behind the bars!

I think this is Japanese kanji. Japan took Chinese characters and messed around with some of them. Its ok, nothing to do with me. I think I can translate most Chinese simplified and traditional characters with aid of a dictionary.
With this some characters are wrong here from a Chinese perspective IMHO.
The last one should I think be ai (Love, friendship), the former is ok, "ping" means, but dependent on context, peace/flat/calm, and I think the first kanji is [and. So a clinic/hospital.

Again I don't speak Japanese, and if I got this wrong sorry. I'm only writing/reading Chinese at a basic level.

Thanks again Steve,
Sorry about the eagle. Even with my zest for Pen Tool I started getting tired going around all the feathers, but had to be done
Its very sad really depending on your perspective(?). That was the RAF's Memorial to conflict. This comes from National Memorial Arboretum for the dead that have died in conflict. and its not just British ..... as Dido would say, again and again....
There is still a spare wall to add the names.....
Anyway just one image....

Re: Challenge 336: Human Services
Oh and with PC PS problems, it would be really nice if we shared a room/office, but little me has to work quietly (sometimes). When I screamed at it with all my languages (few) , it did nothing. Life. Think I've fixed it, but not really the PC daemon goes deeper. I'll be back to pen and paint soon. Why can't I just express my views in a few minutes, given my PS skills are fine.
