Some great entries! I like the rough seas and Anna I thought a score of 5 was a bit harsh, nice animation. ![]() |

Thanks Sophie, it was one of the originals when Steve asked for banners initially. I must get around to doing some more when I have some time. Nick |

Thank you! You've done a great job with that snow and beams of light coming from the lamp. Like it. Doug |

Re: Challenge 387: A royal plunge
A very warm image from ahmedalij started this week's entries - I like the late afternoon feel, with the sun glinting off the upper window. Plenty of handmade textures here, but objects such as the ladder and deckchair feel rather flat: sometimes, you just have to use real photographs! I like all the fountains in the second entry, and that's a novel way of bending the building around a corner. A hint here: make one of the copies darker than the other, and it will look more like it's going round the corner. An exuberant scene from Ant Snell, with water slides coming out of every arch and window - and a scared-looking Princess Anne shooting down (or, rather, up) one of them. What long thighs she has! I like the horse, which is a good reference to her fondness for riding, but there's a real scale issue with the deck chairs it's standing next to! Beautiful work from Nick Curtain, with a glorious night-time scene. That pool looks really welcoming, and the waterfall at the back is a great addition - as are the lamps with pools of light beneath them. Excellent. A nicely integrated pool from tooquilos, with good use of perspective - I like the added diving board (although it really should be casting a shadow) and the way the horse is tucked behind it. Splendid legwork in the animated version - I like the way the diving board flexes with the horse's weight, and that's a great zoom in to the judges. A very enticing night scene from bayer2012, with beautifully lit windows and great reflections in the pool. The shadows even match the direction of the moon - a good touch. Nice work! And I like the symmetry of the second entry, but you'd be better off sorting out that perspective issue with the arches first - I don’t think the peak in the middle helps. There's a great sense of royal over-indulgence to brewell's entry, with the horses careering through the pool. Is that an insignia on the bottom? I can't quite make out the green design. Given the strength of the shadows under the arches, I think the leaping horses should cast stronger shadows on the wall - and, certainly, much closer to the horses. And are you sure a window like that wouldn't open in two halves? Very clever work from LagoDiLecco, who has flooded the square with water cascading from the upper balcony. All the people are really well integrated into the scene, as is the crocodile... a very refreshing approach. A very tastefully-wrought scene from Deborah Morley, complete with reflections and excellent shadows. Great perspective! And it looks as if that lobster is going to keep cropping up... still, at least it's waving the flag. (You do know lobsters only go that colour when they've been boiled, right?) I like the waterfall that leads into joeysala's entry, and the extreme delicacy of the ladder - with its nicely worked shadow. The diving board could do with a matching shadow, of course. The only thing that I'm not sure of here is the corner of the pool top right - I feel this needs to curve around a little move for comfort. I laughed out loud at Jimbean's entry, with its cast of sunbathing royals - the body you've chosen for the Queen is perfect, a great expression on her sleeping face, and I like that she's still wearing her crown! Slightly odd perspective on the pool - it looks like the top right corner is rising up, but that's actually more to do with the placement of the bottom corner. There's a tutorial in HotChiPs on creating water from scratch - you might like to take a look. An extreme angle on the pool from Ben Mills, with a distorted railing right in the foreground. The figure leaping from the diving board needs to be a lot smaller, since he's so far in the distance... and where are Princess Anne's legs? Has water turned opaque? The version of Anne that Garfield72 has used doesn't look too happy... maybe she should get out of the shade. I like the perspective on the pool, although the tiny figure on the diving board should be a little larger, I think. Casting a shadow from the diving board onto the wall would be a big help in making it stand out, as well. A first Friday Challenge entry from Lorenzo1977, with a pool the fits the scene neatly - I like that small tower with steps on the left. You have a slight problem with the figures: the two on the tower are too large, the woman on the right seems to be stretched horizontally, and the one in the pool doesn't have space for her legs! I like the rendering of the poster on the wall, though - especially the way the bricks show through. And a good attempt at the tents on the balcony, but you need to follow the perspective as set by the window. Benvenuto, Lorenzo! More wanton destruction from michael sinclair, as floods engulf an entirely different view of St James's Palace. I like the effect, but is the sea a little green for that sky? A great angle on the QE2 in the second entry - that water must be deeper than it looks. A serene scene from marlcliff, with a tasteful railing around the pool edge. I like the horse in the foreground, and Anne on the balcony (although she is a little too large for the position). There's a slight problem with the perspective of the pool, in that it doesn't quite match the courtyard - and if you're going to reflect the railings, you should really add reflections of the buildings behind! Cute duck. A good scene from plawansine, with a pool surrounded by grass and plenty of people enjoying the weather. All works well here, except for the shadows and lighting on the people, which come from all different directions: look at the shadows in the arches, that gives you the direction of the sun. A new member this week, and 栩梦生 has the distinction of being our first member whose name I have no idea how to pronounce (although it appears to translate as Xu Dream Health). The caption translates as "honest government, fighting corruption", and it's a great scene: lots of activity, a fantastic view of the crowd, and a well placed screen on the balcony. I like the added smoke, which ties everything together. 欢迎到论坛上,栩梦生! Always impressed by munchonu's ability to make any scene look sinister. And this one's no exception: the flooded courtyard is given a sense of menace by the placement of the dog, and that crow perching next to the newly-integrated stone wall. Dramatic stuff! Just a couple of things: the angle of the sides of the steps is too extreme, they look as if they're tipping downwards; and we shouldn't really be able to see the reflection of the diving board at all from this angle. Very fine work, all round. I was very amused by Josephine Harvatt's entry - especially the grill over the top to stop people getting their coins back. Watch the angle of those shadows, though - they need to match the direction of the shadows under the arches. I like the open arch in Sophie's entry, which gives a feeling of work still to be done. But you need to watch the perspective on the pool: it needs to be a lot taller for this space. And don't you think those rear steps are a little small compared to the deckchair next to them? A rather beautiful snow scene from Artwel, with chess pieces nicely nestled into the scene. Great touches like the intelligent reflection of the boat, but shouldn't those islands have reflections as well? And you need to watch your shadow directions. But really, this image is so beautiful these comments are only nit-picking. Great work. A fantastic week's entries - so much variety, so much inspiration. Congratulations, everyone. |

Eeek!! I totally overlooked the diving board shadow! I can see how the pool would benefit by tweeking that corner. Thanks for pointing that out, Steve. _________________ "Art is a blade of grass ... and in a moment I will eat it." |

Thanks Steve. It's funny you spend hours working on something, upload it on here then I notice the glaringly obvious mistakes in the reflections of the left hand side buildings, I guess I should have paid more attention to you chapter on reflections! ![]() _________________ “Art Is Never Finished, Only Abandoned.” |
