Some brilliant entries this week. Nick your London underground map was a fantastic idea. GKB loved your picture of the Clock Tower (apparently that's it proper name big Ben being the bell) with the sky writing behind it, I thought at first you'd just posted a picture you'd taken it look so real

Gordon, anyone would think you've got some time on your hands this week - or maybe the olympics are inspiring you!

Hi Deborah,
I'm afraid that ideas just pop into my head and I just have to find the time to do them! No more ideas in there at the moment ..... but there is still time before Steve passes judgement tomorrow!

Incredible Artwel, this Photobucket! A hundred Photoshop pictures, that's a lot of work and a lot of inspiration. When I saw your beautiful solution of the olympic challange on vimeo.com, I had to think of this webpage:
http://technic.lego.com/en-us/games/default.aspx?icmp=COUSGamesGLTechnicChallenge

The London undergroud of Nick is a very cunning idea! Love this picture.

Re: Challenge 413: That sporting event
Nick Curtain set the bar high this week, with a beautifully constructed entry - the five rings cunningly integrated into the London tube map. Perfect rendering of the colours, of course, but look how well the interchange stations have been placed... an inspired entry, Nick!

I like the Lord of the Rings entry from salfordnurse - a good pulled focus giving us the Olympic rings clutched between those anxious fingers. Nice idea! Ballet lessons, eh? You should have been part of the NHS section of the opening ceremony!

A clever entry from Linda Eckert, who has worked the rings into a complicated costume. I especially like the way the pattern has been wrapped around the hat: is this a 3D model? Can't think how you could have done it otherwise! And great glasses, too. It took me a while to see the second entry as dripping oil paint tubes - very graphic, very appealing! But are the streams of paint a little too thin, particularly the red and black?

Neat work from Ant Snell, with former TV magician Tommy Cooper performing a trick using the rings. I think you need to use Plastic Wrap on complete rings, and then cut them: otherwise the joins start to look a little artificial. Or you could lock the transparency and then smudge towards the ends. But what a good idea!

A complex bike from GKB - that black ring looks particularly painful! A great idea, which so nearly works: but look how elliptical the original wheels are - that's the shape you have to match with the other three. Beautiful clouds in the second entry - perfectly achieved. And I like the adapted Audi logo in the third entry! And a good use of quoits in the fourth entry - but you need to take another look at the viewing angle, and the amount of shading on the rings. I was especially tickled by the (gasp) fifth entry, featuring those ill-fated badminton players - genius! Glad to see you have more time on your hands this week, Gordon.

A set of coloured spotlights from Garfield72, with (ahem) myself taking centre stage. Is that how spotlights would look, though: dark in the middle, white at the edges? If anything, surely the other way round? And what am I supposed to do without a computer - sing Photoshop's praises?

A delicate set of rings from Vibeke, with well placed shadows that give them distance from the body. For extra realism, those shadows should curve around the contours of the little girl: in particular, they should touch the rings at the points where the rings touch her arms and legs, moving away from the rings with distance.

The five rings are cunningly concealed in Frank's entry - you can just make them out half way along the wall on the left. Is that PS in the background a coincidence? A great texture and depth to this one!

I'm never quite sure what to make of tooquilos' entries when I just look at the still image - is this horse about to come to a sticky end? I like all the entries in the animated version - the weights and running track are particularly impressive, with a clever boxing ring and archery target! Those tennis balls could do with a shave, though. What a lot of work you've put into this multiple entry!

Subtle work, as ever, from brewell, with the rings shown as coffee stains on the table - and, of course, the badge on the IOC cop. Very cleverly realised!

The rings artfully worked into a set of bicycle wheels from Jota120. Don't think they're going to win any medals, though - they’re all missing a wheel. Delicate work on the rings of Saturn in the second entry - particularly the black ring! But having some trouble making out the third entry...

A new member this week - and sciteach, from Oregon, has a novel set of earrings for the Queen. Now that certainly gives here a more funky appearance - but clearly not enough to clear her grumpy expression! Welcome to the forum, Steve.

Good politics from Ben Mills, with a group of halos on Olympic worthies... I like the missing Os from the text!

I like joeysala's hanging mobile - very nicely achieved. The flare twinkles give it a real lift, don't they.

Clever work from Jimbean, tucking the rings away into the wheels of the cable car - is that their real placement? How fortuitous!

Fine crop circles from Josephine Harvatt, with a comical spinning flying saucer. Not sure Bevel & Emboss is the best way to light the circles, though, especially at this viewing angle. Might be better shaded by hand.

An amusing Olympic-branded ladybird from Deborah Morley - good to see the wildlife getting in on the action! I like the way the rings are curved around the body. A particularly cleverly constructed second entry, with the rings worked into the architecture. Should the bottom right ring be flipped horizontally, though?

A clever reference to some antique television equipment from Emil, with subtle colouring. I like the grainy TV image there, and the overall moody lighting.

A neat arrangement of cart wheels from James, although I'd question your typography (that Hobo font couldn't have existed at the time the photo was taken). Spectacular cartwheeling in the animated version!

A great set of gears from Artwel - do they need to intersect with each other more, though? I love the animated version, complete with smoke and sparks - what a great machine!

Beautifully modelled rings from jpore, which really look well integrated into Tower Bridge. Terrific lighting, great placement of the rings. Very good work!

Re: Challenge 413: That sporting event
Thanks again Steve.

#1. They are of course not bicycles, but unicycles. These guys were touring around Mongolia, as you do! My friend has one. Quite a skill to learn to ride on one wheel and no breaks apart from by the rider controlling fixed pedals for balance and motion. Think I'll stick to two wheels. But maybe it will become an Olympic event!!

#2. Yes nice to get the black ring ready made

#3. The last image is of lab synthesised molecule related to graphite created using an Atomic Force Microscope. A single atom is scanned cross compound molecules to measure the variation in charge to reveal the atomic bonds between the atoms of molecules (chemistry). This Olympic molecule is just 1.2 nanometres (1×10−9 m or 1×10−3 μm) across. But err .. I added the colour, though they also do graphically to visually and help highlight features. Caveat: well this is my understanding

That was a bit of a ramble ..!.

Steve enjoy France! I do, though have not been cycling there this year yet. Olympics and Le Tour got in the way.

Great creative entries this week. Enjoyed them all.

Trevor

You are right -actually crop circles are surprisingly quite difficult to do - I gave up the will to live on other methods and as time was running out resorted to emboss

Thanks Steve, I saw the NHS at the Olympics..Never been more scared in my life!!!. Originally I was going to do a image with Sir Elton John wearing the olympic rings as glasses, then i thought he's probably already worn glasses like that at some point early in his career
