Re: Challenge 421: The diving suit
I understand what you're asking. It was the first thing that came into my mind, when I decided to make something out of this picture. It must have been a kind of association, maybe there has been an episode in the series of the Avengers that slumbered at the back of my mind. I don't know really. I do know that this series was one of best I've ever seen on TV... British of course! And Artwel... of course as well! |

You gave this diving suit a nice and neat place Joey, and beautifull polished. I love it. http://i1158.photobucket.com/albums/p610/joeysala/Divingsuit.jpg |

Re: Challenge 421: The diving suit
This Challenge has brought a number of old users back - including Jeepy, with a polished version of the suit. It could still be a lot more shiny, I think. I was impressed with the Rocket Man second entry - an ingenious idea, it's surprising no-one else thought of it! Good to see you here again, Jean-Philippe. I like Ant Snell's diver leaking inside his tank - but there are a few issues here. If he's behind the fish, then the fish shouldn't be transparent; and if there's a person inside the suit, should it really be so much larger than the people clearly standing in front of it? A fine set of scrubbers in the second entry - I can't imagine what you googled to come up with this assortment! Good to see tomiloi back, as well, with a splendid entry - Captain Nemo's Nautilus, if I'm not mistaken, in the background, with the diver firmly on the sea bed. The bubbles around him really bring him to life - but shouldn't he have a couple of tubes leading to the surface? Ben Mills has placed his polished diver rather neatly in a fish tank, artfully nestled behind the rock and grass and looking very much part of the image. The only thing I'd change here would be to add just a small amount of translucence to the fish's tail, so we see a suggestion of the diver through it - I think this would add a little to the overall effect. Good polishing from Garfield72, and the marlin on the wall behind does add to the scene. The suit has been brightened, but still looks like rather aged brass: can you bring a higher polish to it? A welcome return from Steve Hill, as well, with a finely constructed fantasy scene - but why is the mermaid holding a serving fork? I'm not quite sure what we're looking at here: she's leaning through some sort of porthole, but we can see the diver's foot behind it. What is that object? And should she be quite so red, if she's underwater? A good location in the second entry, but he doesn't quite eem to be part of the scene. It might be as simple as adding a shadow, although tucking him partly behind the rock would place him in there more convincingly. A clever entry from sciteach, with the highly polished diver sharing a cup of oil with R2D2. Great work getting them both to sit down - the limbs have all been very finely rearranged. I like the deep shadow, but why is the top of the table so fuzzy? It may be glowing, but it surely isn't fading away! A fine Lost in Space theme from GKB, with Will Robinson ignoring the creeping Carmagnolle approaching from behind - despite Robby the Robot's best efforts to warn him. All very nicely constructed, and the lit-up head of the Carmagnolle gives it a highly robotic feel. That's a terrific spaceship, too - is it from the original series? I like the rusting hulk in the second entry - I think he could do with a larger tin of Brasso, though. Good polishing in the third entry - I like the harness being painted red, it gives it a more practical look. A strong image from Eggbox, with a lilting tube train hurtling through Waterloo station. A beautifully polished diver, too, casting an impressive reflection on the polished floor - and you're the first this week to give him an air hose, Ted! Good detail! And I like his appearance in the aquarium tunnel in the second entry - perhaps a reflection in that glass is needed? A rare entry from Kathryn, with a very nicely polished diver: years of crud have been cleaned away, revealing a beautifully shiny suit beneath. I'd guess that the Median filter has been put to good use here - excellent work! Very taken with Mariner's entry, with many great features - the air tubes, the rising bubbles, the tiny fish swarming in front of the diver, the grass overlapping his feet. The choice of colour is excellent, that dull steel blending in well with the background; and there's something really appealing about the rainbow hues sparkling on the suit. I'd never have thought of approaching it in this way, but the results are absolutely beautiful. Truly an image you should be very proud of, Michael. At first I was afraid, I was petrified... Josephine Harvatt's disco diver has his head transformed into a light ball, with a fine glow on each disk. I like the way the lights are reflected in the suit. But where's the John Travolta iconic pose? Your diver doesn't seem to be enjoying his surroundings. Ah - there, you see, Josephine? Linda Eckert has come up with exactly the pose to match the disco surroundings. A great shiny diver, the disco lights in the head fitting perfectly into the scene. Nicely achieved! A topical entry from brumtaffy, with a strongly Olympic theme - I like the painterly Union Jack in the background. The multicoloured suits distinguish them well, as do the different poses - but they do need shadows to ground them on those bases! A neat museum setting from joeysala, with a shiny diver now, oddly, positioned next to a couple of political posters. I like the ropes in front of the suit, but I've never seen a rope that comes out of a wall in that way: surely the end of the rope would be attached to a hook at the same height as the stands? A dramatic entry from Frank, with a boat captain who looks remarkably like Frank commanding a diving vessel. The diver has been expertly polished and immaculately positioned on the back of the ship - a splendid new pose, as well. Perfect! Good to see the diver in appropriate surroundings in tooquilos's entry - and it was that Friday Challenge that inspired Josephine to include the diver in the first place. A very balletic animated version, with a real diver finding the sunken Carmagnolle suit - followed by an ingenious automatic polishing device. Now there's an invention the world needs! Some good polishing from Jota120, with most of the rust removed - but is the diver just a touch too green? There is something rather appealing about the second entry, with the diver surreally caught in a spider crab's web in the crab nebula. I was really taken with the third entry, showing the diver on the moon - terrific tonal matching and colouring, a great new shadow, and a perfect sense of him walking towards the camera. Oh, and a very fine composition too. Beautiful. I don't know what prompted it, but Sjef's homage to The Avengers features both Steed's bowler hat and umbrella, and a remarkably recognisable silhouette of Emma Peel behind - you've got the body shape and the hair just right. All added to a highly polished diving suit - I like the discreet sparkle on the toe! A complex reworked suit from Artwel, with a load of extra tubing snaking its way around the body. I like the bronze colouring, and the green glass orbs - a very strong image. I like the idea of the legs, as well, but are you sure USB cables were the right choice? A rather splendid recolouring from brewell, whose diver now appears in full ice hockey livery. A neat adjustment of the pose, with a good shadow and reflection. I'm sure this would give him a significant advantage, as long as he could see out! High polish from James, even though his diver does look like he's about to be swallowed. A lot of action in the animated version, with the diver being loaded into the funnel of a sunken ship - before a shark swims in and out, and another zooms straight out towards the camera. Good to see the diver escaping just in time! A superb fantasy scene from salfordnurse, with a couple of divers perched on a hillside, while a zeppelin approaches and a couple of dragons fight it out in the sky. There's a real consistency to the quality of this image that makes everything look as if it belongs right in the scene: subtle lighting and a subdued colour palette add to the sense of wonder. Very good work, Simon. A scene from, I think, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman from BigVern, with the polished and laser-eyed robot as the new horror. A well imagined image, with a great sense of drama and destruction. But who is the naked woman on the stick? I couldn't see where she fit in! I was hugely amused by Deborah Morley's Mr and Mrs divers - the smaller scale of the woman, the artfully constructed skirt and top, and the charming way in which they're holding hands. How very touching! I like the darkness and mystery of Emil's entry, which adds a real underwater feeling that brings a strong sense of isolation to the diver - you can almost feel how cold the water is. Remarkable work, very well achieved. Very fine work this week! |

Re: Challenge 421: The diving suit
Thanks Steve, I wanted a retro type of spaceship so I thought 'what's more retro than Dan Dare?' Googling 'Dan Dare spaceships' brought up this image. It is a concept model for a new film starring Sam Worthington. I reckon that's a film to be seen. _________________ Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana |

Re: Challenge 421: The diving suit
Thanks Steve, I think the only thing id change would be some of the lighting on the under side of the zeppelin, as you cant see what the cabin is on it. it's actually a galleon but having it any lighter ruined a lot of the mood of the image so thought it was best left as is. I must have had a blank spot this week though spent ages trying to draw the ropes, then realised all i needed to do was modify a brush to be a bit more bumpy and use it to stroke a path drawn by the pen tool. |

Re: Challenge 421: The diving suit
Thanks for the nice comments Steve. Funny how things can look different to how they are intended. The background which I used and recoloured was a screenshot from the game Fallout 3 (a great game by the way) and in it there are statues on the building in the far background and a wrecked street lamp in the near background. However, because of their alignment and then also because the recolouring and darkening I did it does now look like there is a naked woman on a stick. Until I got your comment though I hadn't noticed it ... doh! I have included an extract below from the original screenshot for comparison. ![]() _________________ "Check out the big brain on Brett!" |

Right. I can no longer look at that picture now without seeing the naked woman on a stick, no matter how hard I try |
