Re: Challenge 442: The Martians are coming!
Cheers Trevor. I agree that a good book can create a far more evocative, emotional and most importantly personal experience than a film. Many great books have been made into mediocre or poor films.

I remember reading War of the Worlds and Day of the Triffids with much affection. I do like the musical version of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds as the narrated story and sound effects allow me to visualise in a similar way to the book.

As the song goes:
" The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one he said. The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one ....... but still they come!"

The 3D tools in PS CS6 are so brilliantly straightforward to use that I thought I would mock up some CD cases and put together a quick second montage making the homage a bit more apparent.

TWO SCENERIOS:
#1 - The aliens think the Space Needle is an enemy, and maybe they've underestimated the "enemy".
......................OR.......................
#2 - One of the aliens has just discovered its "soul mate".

There's no # 3 - and I apologizw for the first two!

May be some mistakes, I didn't have time to add a few extras (people, cars etc), I will try to complete it later.

Re: Challenge 442: The Martians are coming!
First to demolish Woking this week (and in record time) was GKB, with a splendid blending of War of the Worlds and Mars Attacks. A hugely atmospheric piece, with great burning masonry and part-demolished buildings. Just a couple of points: I'd like to see some thickness to those broken walls; and with so many fiery light sources, I don't think there would be any shadows at all, let alone such crisp unidirectional ones.

Very amused by Lorenzo1977's papal entry, with the Martian as a convincing candidate for the next pontiff. As they say, if the hat fits... but have you squeezed St Peter's? I don't remember the dome as being as pointy as that.

A novel entry from Ben Mills, in which the invader has collapsed after picking up a flu bug. Patching the original building must have been the hardest job here - and it's still showing a few signs of sickness itself. I like the new sky, though!

A moody, atmospheric close-up from Babybiker, with a flying saucer approaching from the distance - very well composed. Perhaps the odd bright light in the Martian to form a point of interest?

Great laser beams from Garfield72, producing fine explosions where they hit the ground. Should the man be more illuminated by the flames, though? I like the extra touches - the new holes in the road, and the beautiful flying saucer.

A fine set of aliens from Frank, albeit with rather camp poses. But a great setting, with multiple machines featuring alien drivers. A small perspective problem here: the legs indicate that the machine on the left is just behind the foremost alien, but the driver is tiny in comparison. Or maybe these things are driven by children?

I don't know what inspired Sjef's aquatic revelry - certainly not the invaders, I suspect. But it's a splendid concoction of watery goodness, with a huge amount of detail (I particularly like the falling fat man). Great splashes, with just a few perspective scaling issues.

An interesting observation from Jota120, likening the alien invader to electricity pylons. Beautiful lighting, too, and I like the detail of the red traffic light reflecting off the leg. A very thoughtful piece. I like the assembly of objects in the second entry, but the colour of the original robot seems at odds with the rest of the equipment: is it just too blue?

Fantastic work from Mariner - the machine sits perfectly in that field, with well-judged shadows and appropriate reflections on all the shiny areas. I like the serenity of the scene, and the sense of scale given by the cow beneath the leg. A really splendid entry, with beautiful composition and perfect realisation.

I was amused by Linda Eckert's pole dancers, who seem to be making good use of the shiny legs - they do seem somewhat gravity-defying, don't they. I've always thought it a very odd hobby. Perhaps a stage background would suit better?

Good to see Ziggy Stardust, appropriately accompanied by the Spiders from Mars, in Josephine Harvatt's entry. But why the glow? Wouldn't he be better integrated in among the spiders, rather than pasted in front of them?

I'm writing this en route to Barcelona, and I'd saved the pages as web archives before I left - which means I can't see the animation that accompanies tooquilos's entry until I get there much later. Torture! The promotional poster is so appealing, I want to see the movie! ...next day... got wifi, so I can see the animated version. Splendid! A great story line, I love the gradual destruction of the car and the road, and especially like the way the legs emerge. Good walking movement, too - a real epic.

An enjoyable jungle setting from michael sinclair, with the machine neatly recoloured to fit its new surroundings. I think you've missed a trick with those vines, though: bringing some in front of the rear leg would have integrated it far more convincingly into the scene, don't you think?

Great motion from James, with really clever compression before each jump - thoroughly convincing. An immaculately patched background where the original Martian has been removed, and that speeding car adds a real sense of life to the image. Fantastic, James.

I knew eventually I'd fall victim to munchonu's horrific imagination... but there's something about seeing your own decapitated head that does make you stop and think. Mmm... love the lip gloss!

A very fine animation from lwc, with a spinning flying saucer and a Martian that glides past. I like the lightning flash, and the fact that it's a continuous, looping animation. Note: to get the image to show up, I just changed the http: to img: and then put the whole url in square brackets.

Spectacular special effects from BigVern, to accompany the gloriously over-the-top lettering - and the jaunty angle gives it a real extra boost. And I like the CD covers in the second entry - but don't forget a bit of reflection on the cases to give them some body. Glad you're experimenting with the 3D tools, though!

The setting in Deborah Morley's entry looks like the basement from that Martian invasion movie whose name I can't quite remember... that's a remarkably intricate cutout of the view through the remains of the window! Hard to tell if the laser beams are coming from the Martian or the man in the cellar, though. Or perhaps they're out-staring each other?

Clever playing with scale from Emy, with a load of tiny Martian spiders gathering around the Mars Explorer. Some neat adjustments here, making it look like far more than just one model. But are the blue ones just too blue for the scene?

A beautiful entry from jpore, with a highly polished Martian and a load of extra detail - the new sky, the smoke around the legs, the added flames and lightning... and I like the way the top of the building is disintegrating. Some clever touches, too, such as the way the building is lit up by the passing fireball. Very nice work!

There's something charmingly organic about joeysala's Martians, with their dripping tentacles. A great sense of scale here, and the urban setting gives it a real feeling of menace.

High drama from Darren - great destruction, I especially like the HotChiPs billboard! Are you having trouble with image size, though? Make sure you use File > Save for Web and lower the image quality, rather than the pixel size. A shame to have so much detail lost in the translation.

A cinematic montage from Artwel, with a splendid hole in the road and great distant destruction - and I really like the added claw. You're right, though, a few fleeing pedestrians would really help to bring this to life!

Excellent work this week, it's been a real pleasure. Many thanks, Deborah, for the inspirational photograph!

Re: Challenge 442: The Martians are coming!
There was a reason for the glow but I can't remember what it was now - I just think I wanted to make him look like he was being teleported down (a fail there obvs )

I should have made more effort with the spiders too but I was running out of time at that point - never mind, this week I will make more of an effort

Thanks Steve -- you're right only short aliens get to drive -- at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Great entries everyone -- some imaginations out there for sure.

Thanks again Steve.
I was thinking about the blueness too, but did not experiment further as started thinking about putting a blue flashing light on top!, as you do, which just made me laugh, so had to park-it, distracted, and anyway guess should have been blues and twos...... So just left with the ethereal blueness to contrast with The Red Planet. Or, the Martian spent too long on The Blue Planet and came back blue
