I suspect there's tons of innacuracies here - and shadows have totally eluded me.................oh well.

Hi Whaler,

Hi Sjef! I'm glad that you noted my little cheat. But there's also another cheat hidden in there. Let's see if you, or anybody else for that matter, spot that one!

Can't see another cheat Whaler. Or maybe it's the deviated shadow of the couple at the corner of the reflected house?

Re: Challenge 460: A glass too far
A clever cheat from Sjef to start the week - and a stained glass window is an ingenious solution. I like the diffused view of the leg through the glass - a very nice touch. An interesting second entry: shouldn't it be reflecting some sky?

A great image from GKB, with a splendidly rebuilt street scene behind the glass - and a well-chosen replacement cyclist. A reflection on the glass of the scene opposite would have given it much more presence, though.

Some novel frosted glass from Ant Snell, again with a neatly rebuilt building behind. I particularly like the use of those glass carriers - very neat - but the lower Handle with Care sticker surely needs to be opaque in front of the leg? An excellent second entry, too - great cracking!

Frosted glass, too, from Garfield72, with another well rebuilt scene behind it. But what's going on with the legs on the rear man? Have they turned to rubber?

An ingenious reworking from tooquilos, and an expertly rebuilt street. I was particularly impressed with the bus removal. A terrific story told in the second entry, with a great pair of kids. Seems really petty of me to point out that "to" should be "too" in the title, but I just can't help it.

A very strong entry from Whaler, with a rebuilt street and great road markings. The fact that the whole scene is taken up with reflection is really appealing. A very convincing image!

A really funny entry from Frank, with a convincing new street and a good wooden frame for the glass - and I like the glass holder in the hand of the woman at the back. Best of all, of course, is the subtle integration of the boy with the slingshot - nicely done!

A hugely convincing image from James, with the girl at the back in exactly the right pose - complete with glass holders - and a convincing rebuilt street. the animated version is really astonishing - such excellent walking motion, and clearing the whole street like that is ingenious (I particularly like the fact that the car overtakes the bus). Brilliant.

A splendid entry from puffin31939, with a fine glass carrier at the back and a very good new street view - I like the new gloves! Couple of queries: why is the glass sooty? And why does the drainpipe run over the pavement like that?

A great shot from brewell, with two boys crashing through the glass on skateboards. Best of all, though, is the inclusion of two elements most people missed out - refraction in the glass surface, and a reflection. But... that's a weird reflection, showing an offset version of the same street!

I really laughed out loud at Darren's entry, with all those people and dogs (and lizards) pressed up against the glass - what a brilliant idea! And beautifully realised. A superb choice of additions, really cleverly integrated into the scene. Fantastic!

I don't know whether Jota120's entry shows broken glass, or one of those views of a spider's web on caffeine... would it really be as black and clear as that?

A very neat and original take from Mariner, with a glass sign with splendidly bevelled edges. Best of all, though, is the way the sun has been brought out, with shadows over the whole scene. Most appealing! The girl's shadow, though, needs to be moved towards us - we need to see the shadow of the wheel, surely.

A completely rebuilt street from Artwel, with seamless removal of the bus. I'm intrigued by the way they're carrying the open window - you'd think they'd have taped it closed first. Nicely done.

A neat cheat from Emy, making the glass partially transparent. The broken pane works well, and I especially like the fact that the rear carrier has been built entirely out of the existing one. A good new cyclist!

A great 3D scene from BigVern, with excellent refraction in the wine glass and the bottle. I like the cart, too, but I'm having trouble with the fact that the man either has very short legs or an extremely long hidden arm.

A glorious image from Deborah Morley, because it's one of the few this week to include reflections of the street opposite, as well as a refracted view of the buildings behind. I really can't stress enough how important this is to making the glass really look like glass! Good on you, Deborah, for coming up with the goods here.

Good reflections from joeysala, too, and I really like the way the girl is peering through the window - especially her reflection - and, indeed, the interaction between the wholly new cast of characters, including the reflection of the guy across the street. Very fine work indeed!

______________________

I've mentioned a couple of times the importance of reflection and refraction when working with glass, and I want to stress again how much these two factors increase the sense of the glass being a physical object.

To illustrate the point, I've taken GKB's entry and added both reflection and refraction to it. I think you'll agree that it makes a difference:

Thanks for the inspiring image, Vibeke!

Thanks Steve. The girl's shadow is covering the wheel's shadow.

Thanks Steve ... the answer is that the cart had extremely long handles and he is standing in a hole. In reality you've got me bang to rights ... I messed up the chap in the foreground.

Re: Challenge 460: A glass too far
Thanks, Steve. I didn't notice I had overdone the drainpipe (too much fiddling). I blended a photo of frosted glass into my 'glass' to give it some texture. I suppose that is why you see the sootiness. I am pleased that my rear carrier's puppet-warped arm passed the test. It gave me a bit of grief! I thought about refraction but got no further. Never even considered reflection....

Re: Challenge 460: A glass too far
Thanks Steve,

I totally take your point about the reflection although I'm not too sure about the refraction on a sheet of thin glass. With the far wall being parallel to the glass the 'normals' would be at right angles to the glass sheet so no refracted image should occur ... Oh dear do I have my geek's hat on again?

I have to say that everyone turned in some excellent work this week considering that this project was actually impossible!

I'm off to get my anorak surgically removed!

Gordon, don't get it removed just use its "buttons" to toggle it on and off when needed

Toggle ... geddit???

Re: Challenge 460: A glass too far
Thanks again Steve, sorry could not get the second entry in.

>entry shows broken glass, or one of those views of a spider's web on caffeine...

Yes its broken glass. If it was a web, as you say they must have been on caffeine of some drug or from another planet !

>would it really be as black and clear as that?

I understand your concerns. I was a bit concerned hence took the photos. This is a bit weird. Yes from certain angles of incidence and depending on light source is black in most parts. At the same time it can go white if change observers point of view and/or background.

I can't give a confirmed physics explanation at present, but I think its all down to refraction, total internal refraction and reflection, plus contrast of course.

Below, the same broken glass showing both white and black. And the one after this will show pure white we might expect. And the 3rd final one very weird!

Excuse me, last from me on broken glass. I was thinking of using this for a more creative image, maybe I will ....
