Re: Challenge 473: Hogwarts castle
Hi Kenny welcome to the forum. First things first: No one here gets harsh criticism...constructive suggestions yes! I have been on this forum some years now, and I still make mistakes that make me bang my head against the wall.

Anyway, in your submission image (second image) you need firstly to have harmony with the hues that each separate layer-selection-element has (purple-red does not go with, say, yellowy-brown, or greeny blue, and vice versa in a realistic natural environment which may or may not be a representation of fantasy).

Secondly, to prevent your cut-out selections (especially the two foreground characters) from looking obviously cut-out and therefore fake, you need to "Feather" these selections between one and two pixels before clicking Control-J to put them on an automatically created new layer; moreover, to see this effect make sure you deselect the immediately preceding layer from where the original feathering took place.

Here are two images: the first is my corrected version, and the second is your original, and I hope you don't mind me doing this--Michael

Some great entries, I have started mine, but I have had painters in the house all week, and had to disassemble my office and computers earlier in the week. should have put the file in Dropbox first, but I didn't. Hope to get it all up and running tomorrow, but unsure if I will have time to finish.

Re: Challenge 473: Hogwarts castle
Been too busy this week, but did some quick finishing to what I had started. Not a patch on some of the great entries here.

Re: Challenge 473: Hogwarts castle
Excellent cutouts from everyone this week: you've all managed to separate the buildings from the background perfectly. Just saying it here so I don't need to repeat myself each time!

First to build the scene was ahmedalij, with a splendid mountain scene. The warm glow on the tops of the buildings suggests evening sunlight, while all those shadowy figures in the foreground add a real sense of menace. Very fine work! And I like the bombing in the second entry - although I have to say, for a dentist you do show a disturbing fondness for explosions.

Muted tones from Garfield72, with the tops of the buildings disappearing into the mist most effectively. I like the enlarged Harry Potter on the broomstick, but shouldn't he be in some way engaging with the ghostly figure behind him? He seems unaware of its presence.

Good colouring from Ben Mills, with brown and green tones that give the buildings much more of a daylight feel. I like the blue remaining on the roofs, and that's a very well chosen background. Most convincing.

A very graphic image from TheBlueJam, with outlines of the castle against a textured background - and, of course, no montage is complete without a frog playing the piano. Small point: the outlines work well, but it's worth deleting the lines of the ceiling and lamps as they're no longer relevant.

A good distance view from Linda Eckert, with a beautiful mountain top that now has the castle perched on its summit. There is, of course, a slight perspective issue here: the buildings indicate a horizon somewhat higher than the roof line of the building on the far left, but the only hint of horizon in your background is very much lower. The tiny figures of Potter and Hermione in the foreground are a very nice addition, though.

Celestial illumination from Frank, with the sun's rays bursting through the dark cloud. This is a tricky effect to get right: if the sun is behind the buildings, then the face needs to be in shadow - but if it's in front, then the light beams need to come in front of the building as well.

Some terrific shots of Hogwarts on fire from tooquilos, who has transplanted the castle to a rock island and set it ablaze. But watch that perspective: the building on the far left is sloping up, when it should be sloping down towards the horizon. Some truly spectacular flame and destruction effects in the animated version - you're really having fun with After Effects here! The phoenix at the end is a great touch. Just a couple of suggestions: Right at the beginning, the zoom-out would look more like a tracking camera if the castle and the clouds reduced at different speeds. And after the phoenix has risen, perhaps the flames should be extinguished on the burnt-out castle.

Harry flies out of the castle in an out-of-bounds image from James, pausing in freeze frame at the end. But wouldn't it have been better to keep him within the frame of the picture, and have him flying right out of shot? I like the way he weaves through the buildings, though.

Thoroughly on-topic from michael sinclair this week, with a high mountain shot - but there's your horizon, clearly in the distance; and yet the perspective of the buildings suggests a much lower horizon. This works better in the second entry, where the horizon in the background is hidden by the looming mountains. I especially like the mist in the foreground here. A great distance shot in the third entry - and while the owl is a great foreground object, are the wings too crisply cut out?

A very dramatic scene from Emy, with fantasy storms overwhelming the castle: there's a really fine sense of it being engulfed by magical forces here. An excellent choice of background, and those occasional spots of light add a great focus. I like the shadow figure flying out, too. Very nice work.

A clever image from Ben Boardman, with the castle appearing in Dumbledore's outsized crystal ball - and there's his reflection in the ball as well, neatly integrated into the surface. But why is Harry so unengaged? Wouldn't he be interested in the proceedings?

A novel kind of explosion from Sjef, as lightning strikes the castle in a heavy downpour. I like the texture of the rain, and the fine detail of the splashes on the road surface outside. The figure of the man, though, makes it look very much like a model rather than a real castle - but the way you've caught the splashes of rain on his head, shoulders and hands is perfect. Not sure about that odd explosion, though!

A history of Hogwarts from Josephine Harvatt, with a nicely tattered book cover. A few points here: the worn feel needs to work on the castle photo as well, which looks a little detached from the book; and you might find that a Pillow Emboss on the title helps it to look a little more as if it's embossed onto the cover. And to make it more like a real book, make the edges slightly out of square - and round off those corners! I like the author photo in the animated version - especially the wink at the end.

Plenty of flying witches from micky47, causing the radio-announced traffic warning - and a very entertaining array of witches, too. I like the helicopter in the bird bath, which is a very nice touch.

A move to the far north from joeysala, for the Northern Lights - and the way they produce a start green light on the buildings is spectacular. like the few lit windows, too, which add a lot to the realism. A very attractive image.

Very clever work from GKB as the building becomes a hugely elaborate sandcastle - and what a fine construction that would be! Very good work on the shadows, and the choice of background image with the low sun way over on the left. I'd have moved the castle a little to the left to lose the tricky perspective of that end building, but otherwise this is terrific.

A beautiful dawn sky from Mariner. But wouldn't all that colour in the sky have a resulting effect on the colours of the castle? I'd expect to see a little more red on the right hand side. I really like the way you've created those blurred towers in the distance, which give a great sense of the castle extending backwards.

A new member this week, and Kenny ray78 has produced a great Quidditch scene, with the two boys on broomsticks and a goal on the far right. The flying wizards are very well chosen, and the castle has been expertly cut out from its background. A few small suggestions: desaturate the wizards slightly, so they blend in better with the muted tones of the castle behind; and add some blue to the clouds, so it's a closer match to the grey of the castle. And there's always a problem using clouds photographed from a plane, as these have been, in that we're looking down at the m from above rather than up from below, as we would be in real life. A simple solution: try turning the clouds upside down, it might just work. Welcome to the forum!

A great new sky from marlcliff, although I think it would have been worth painting out those original lights as they no longer seem to belong in the image - and perhaps recolour the castle to match the red of the sky? I like the tiny train on the bridge, which is a great addition. You do have a thing about half-dressed women, though, don't you.

A clever image from brewell, with all the towers showing their true purpose - as missiles firing up into the sky. I like the shake on the large tower on the left, which looks as if it's about to erupt. Not sure about the multicoloured smoke, though: is it just too distracting?

A splendid image from Deborah Morley, with the castle nestling perfectly into its new mountain location. I like the way the shadows suggest a ray of sunlight on the right hand side. Best of all, of course, is the waterfall cascading through the bridge supports: what a terrific idea! Although I would be concerned about rising damp in the dining hall.

A beautiful and detailed night shot from Artwel, with low level lighting neatly illuminating the walkways at the base of the buildings. A coincidental waterfall, too, matching Deborah's. There's something a little odd about the perspective here, though, especially at the sides of the building: is this there anything that can be done about this?

An entry from Vibeke that she describes as rushed - but it's a serene and wholly considered piece of work. I particularly like the green roofs, which add a lot of definition and really make the castle look real. Splendid.

Outstanding work this week. Keep it up!

Yes, Steve. I thought of that. But I am not quite capable of that yet. Match Color made a mess of it. Any suggestions?

Re: Challenge 473: Hogwarts castle
Good point about distressing the photo and making the edges rounded - it was actually a scan of a real cover but I cropped it so lost all but the top edge.

I thought about emboss but can never remember how to do it and was too idle too look it up - must try harder
