Some great work this week - everyone has really pushed the boat (or the fox or the elephants!) out on this one - and a big welcome to srawland ! _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Re: Challenge 492: The disused railway
Good to see Nick Curtain in full steam, with a lovingly restored railway. I like the way the subtle curve of the train follows the track into the forest. The out-of-focus thing in the foreground adds a real sense of depth - and the autumnal colours really set it off. A splendid canal scene from steve hill, beautifully integrated into the original. I think that bench may be a couple of sizes too small, though... and shouldn't the bridge wall be reflected in the water? The scale is better in the second entry - but I see what you mean about it dominating the mid ground. A serene view from Claudio_F, with a Japanese temple in the distance and a gold statue in the foreground. There's something about the base of the statue, though, that doesn't quite fit the perspective of the scene: it seems to be sloping up too much. If you took the whole of the base off below the wide white section, it might work. But I like the monks, and the warm glow. A classic Hitchckock movie from TheBlueJam, and that's a beautiful piece of typography. It's a little hard to work out the kiss in the steam: perhaps the whole scene should have been turned to black and white? Good to see you back, Jane-Ann. Has your avatar got even paler in your absence? You need more sun. A topical entry from Ant Snell, with calamity all the way at the Winter Olympics. Great snow scene - and plenty of live action. Good use of Radial Blur from lwc, as an Alfa Romeo speeds under the bridge. The car's perhaps a little big for the road and for the bridge behind - and I'd really like to see a little foliage creeping over the edge of the road, to prevent it appearing too neat. An excellent flood scene from Artwel - for those outside the UK, much of the country has been under water due to torrential rain. Beautiful reflections, especially those of the headlights; and the way the rain drops have been rendered on the surface of the water is perfect. Excellent! And the striped warning on the underside of the bridge really makes it look like it's in current use. I like the added bollards and stronger tones in the second entry - stronger all round. A fine stream from Garfield72, complete with a fisherman standing precariously on the rock (and perfectly blended into the scene). The man on the bridge gives it a sense of depth, too. Perfect work, François. A glorious snow scene from Frank, beautifully created from the original - really, the quality of the snow-covered leaves and the flurry is fantastic. Do you have a special technique at work here, Frank? I'm very interested to see how you managed the leaves so well. More winter snow, this time from Josephine Harvatt - this time with kids. Oversized kids, who yet manage to leave no footprints. Seriously, Jo, they're huge! But I do like the treatment of the leaves, and that spot of blue sky gives a very cold feel. A rather beautiful scene from Kathryn, with a solitary contemplative paddler really setting off the loneliness of the woodland stream. Perfect composition, and a thoroughly appealing image. Great work. A really funny image from Linda Eckert, with a tooled-up Clint Eastwood missing all the action. The best part is the way the bridge is collapsing beneath those two elephants - a brilliant idea, beautifully realised. The only change I'd make would be to show a little thickness to the bottom of the bridge where it's splitting in two. A devastated site from Ben Mills, with rubbish all over the ground and stacked up in bags against the pillar of the bridge. Something tells me you been affected personally by these sorts of issues, Ben? But maybe the sign itself should be a little less pristine. A restored railway from michael sinclair - with a rather elegant fawn on the track. I like the train and especially its steam, but two suggestions: the shadow of the fawn is too strong, given the lack of direct sunlight; and the track coming towards us would, I think, be much more appealing if it continued the curve, rather than running straight. I like the rushing stream in the second entry, and the kingfisher is a good touch - but would the motion trail be only behind it? I like the overgrown track and new location in the third entry, although the track does seem to be rather too far to the left in this view. The rusting entry in the fourth entry does cover the side neatly. A great Jurassic scene from Deborah Morley, as a T Rex crashes through the bridge. Great falling masonry and ironwork, and I like the night effect and the way the dinosaur is lit in the headlights. I was most amused by brewell's entry, full of nesting cows - and there are a lot of them in the scene, if you take the time to seek them out. Messy beasts, aren't they. A new member this week, and srawland has added a splendid knight on horseback hurtling towards us. A great cutout, and the tones match well with the scene. I think I'd have made him a fraction smaller and moved him back a little in the shot, so he blended in without dominating quite so much. Welcome to the forum, Sara! A clever inversion from joeysala, with the steam train running over the bridge, rather than beneath it. I like the fact that it's such an ancient steam train, and a great job revealing it between the metalwork of the bridge sides. Does it need that man sitting on the railing? I think maybe he's just a distraction. A very complete piece of work. I like Vibeke's tourist train, especially the row of onlookers on the bridge. What I can't work out is what they were originally leaning on, and how you managed to remove it yet be able to see them through the metalwork of the bridge sides... clever stuff! Not just a disused railway, but an entire disused amusement park from tooquilos - complete with broken wooden horses, a smashed mask, a dilapidated caravan and some splendidly degraded signs. And I like the subtle way in which the original railway track has been replaced by a rising track from a rollercoaster. A clever animated version, with such a tricky choice at the beginning: I like the way the woman springs into view, then follows the signs through the forest. Perhaps the scenes should simply blend into each other, rather than coming to a stop and then fading to black? And great to see the carnival in its full glory, before we backtrack and see the dilapidated version. A fantastic piece of work, Anna. You've excelled yourself here. A great animation from James, with a dog and a fox chasing each other over the bridge and a pair of people walking out of the woods. The woman on the right has a face that's rather too big for her head in the final shot where she looks at the camera - lift that hat to give her some brain room! A neat scene from puffin31939, with a steaming train powering under the bridge. It feels like it's leaning to the left a little - could the whole train be rotated a couple of degrees clockwise? and while the steam works really well over the bridge, there's a sharp cutoff on the right. Smudge it out! Oh - and watch the soft blending at the back of the train, where it appears to merge into the bridge wall. A magnificently cleaned-up scene from Mariner, who has restored the bridge and removed all the errant foliage - and also brought the sun out, with great shadows both of the bridge and the horseman (and a very nice job getting a side-on horse shadow to fit that front-on view of the rider). A really fantastic job, Michael. A watery entry from tissana, with a river cutting right along the track line. But wouldn't the water reflect the bridge, and the trees either side? That's where the real work starts on this one! I like micky47's train going over the bridge, although I'd like it even more if we could see the train through the gaps in the ironwork. That road, though - looks rather artificial, don't you think? And why is the left car so distorted? Excellent work this week, and many thanks to Michael for the starting image. |

Re: Challenge 492: The disused railway
Thanks, Steve. I completely missed that hard edge on the steam. I was aware of the soft blend but I have been suffering from a bad back and can only sit for short periods. That was one correction that just didn't get done _________________ Man cannot change the direction of the wind but he can adjust the sails |

Re: Challenge 492: The disused railway
Thank you Steve: - for the snow covered leaves I used Nick Curtain's method using color range , and blending modes color and screen on two white layers. For the falling snow I used your method (CC pg 263) but in step 6 I used filter Pixelate> Crystalize for the foreground snow flakes. |

Re: Challenge 492: The disused railway
Aawww!! I missed it. :blush I thought I could kill two birds with one stone and submit my entry two different sites. After reading the feedback on the other's work I know I have made those mistakes too but would have loved to have Steve's feedback. Steve? ![]() http://maja1234.deviantart.com/art/Love-435688044 Also what I'm wondering is since a bridge is a man made thing it can it not be as big or small as you want it to be, then does it matter how big or small the people are? People have used it in their entries for different purposes than it originally was meant for, can the size not differ too? ![]() And.... after reading your feedback on an entry above I was wondering whether you would say the same about the motion blur in this image. I was concerned about it and mention it but nobody gave feedback http://maja1234.deviantart.com/art/In-cahoots-with-the-Easter-bunny-434355421 |

Re: Challenge 492: The disused railway
Thanks Steve, Here are the 2 photos I used (my own). As you can see it wasn't too hard to get them behind the rail, just a few repairs here and there. I also used the new perspective warp on the train. ![]() _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Ha ha, yes, maybe. Unfortunately sunshine has been a little hard to come by! Rebecca is my favourite film. I did kinda rush but I will jump on to this weeks challenge. It's a great form of escapism ![]() |
