The tourist was so bored waiting for his wife to leave the gift shop, he was unaware of his need for rescuing.

Re: Challenge 511: On the wing
A fine green screen image from DavidMac started this week's entries, and it's a clever way of working with the cut-off wings. I like the comp shots of the pilot with the background inserted - very convincing. Have to agree with Artwel about the second entry though - that tea lady really is in the wrong place! Ah, that's better - the third entry. But surely no-one would be allowed to rattle teacups on a sound stage?

A good pair of wings from sciteach, and a neat spin on the propeller. I like the way the wing tips are disappearing into the clouds. Shouldn't the propeller spin show at least a full revolution, though? I suppose it all depends on how fast propellers spin. Gordon?

I like stefan's idea of giving us a close-up of the plane against the city backdrop. But there's a real problem with the spin: you shouldn't see the inside of the engine spinning, or indeed the edge of the wing, and certainly not the man sitting on the wing. The solution here is to first isolate the propeller to a new layer, then spin just that layer. Been playing with the new Spin Blur feature in CC 2014, have you?

A surreal image from Ant Snell, with the part plane suspended from an airship. I like the idea, the texture and even the strings holding the two together, but the compression of the airship is a little disturbing... maybe if you'd kept just the front window circular?

A great spin from srawland, and a very neatly inserted background. I like the way you've turned the man into a ghost sitting on the wing - subtly achieved, a clever idea. A better ghost in the second entry - nice work.

Fun and games from brewell, with another of Grampa's far-fetched war stories... really nicely achieved, and a clever way of avoiding having to rebuild the wings. Particularly fine bullets - I like the one that's slicing through the propeller.

I enjoyed Emy's entry, with the wheel of the plane just dipping into the surf - a very nicely achieved spray, as well. The life jacket on the man is a good touch, too. Perhaps a little more spin blur on the propeller?

It looks like tooquilos has bolted a pair of wooden wings onto her plane - and a new wooden propeller, too. In fact, is the man now wearing a wooden jacket? I love the way the wings wobble in the animated version, and that spinning propeller. Terrific animation of that facial expression. I really like the way the parachute gets caught on the tree. Excellent!

A speedy animation from James, but a packed one: the spinning propeller and the plane zooming in on the camera are the obvious actions, but don’t miss the man falling off the back of the wing and those wheels folding back up into the wings. Perhaps the plane should have shot up off the top of the image for completeness?

A good closeup from Linda Eckert, with a fast-spinning propeller. I like the way the man has been moved so he sits on the cloud - but perhaps he should be lowered in contrast and a little desaturated, so he appears to be more in the background.

A whole new plane from michael sinclair - I think that's rather missing the point of working with the supplied image, Michael. I like the movement in the animated version, but I must take issue with your shadow. First, there's no way the wheel supports could cast a shadow like that: that's more of a reflection. Second, why is the man's shadow floating off the wing? And third - to avoid the double shadow effect, seen where the man's shadow joins the wing's shadow, put all the elements of a shadow into a new Layer Group and then reduce the opacity of the whole group, rather than reducing the opacity of each layer. I like the subtle twitching of the man in the third entry - I suppose you're going to say he's just falling asleep? And I think I've seen most of the fourth entry before...

A beautiful image from GKB, with a trio of planes in formation. Fine work replacing the reflection in the nose cone! Intrigued by the amount of spin on your propellers, though. So let's do the sums... a prop spins at 2500 rpm, which is about 40 spins per second. Assuming a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second, we should be seeing the prop move for about one sixth of that time, which equates to a 60 degree spin... you must have be using a very fast shutter speed!

A very funny entry from Frank, with an expertly created referee's shirt on the man. Fantastic work on the three planes in the background, too - a really glorious image, Frank. Magnificent.

Good new wings from hanxin16, although they could be a bit longer. I like the group in the background, but I can't make out what they are: flying wizards playing Quidditch? Or just a flock of ducks?

A really funny entry from Deborah Morley, who has added a partner to the man on the wing. Perfect expression and pose - and wherever did you find a woman where we can see the soles of her shoes? I really like the paired grumpiness. Very small point: if you duplicate her layer, desaturate the copy and set it to Hard Light, you can bring her level of contrast more in keeping with his:

Very fine work from Garfield72, who has brought the plane into land - with a strong shadow, propeller spin, and a neatly cleaned-up nose cone. I like the way the man is now clutching his hat. Ingenious!

A beautiful close-up from Vibeke, on a sandy beach. I like the fact that you've removed the reflections from the nose cone, but don't forget the reflected lights in the plane itself. How did you change his expression? Or is that from a different image?

I was most amused by Tom's idea of replacing the engine on the USS Enterprise with the plane's propeller - a very good fit. No doubt Gordon, our residential aeronautical expert, will have comments on the implausibility of using a propeller in a vacuum.

A nicely constructed entry from Daniel Millar, with Superman rushing to the rescue - his pose neatly matching the almost head on view of the plane itself. I notice you're one of the few to retain the tailplane - well reasoned!

Fantastic entries this week. Vibeke, many thanks for the starting image!

Re: Challenge 511: On the wing
Yes indeed Steve, I was playing with it the "spin blur" feature in CC2014 for the first time, and I did try a lot of things, like isolating the propellor etc, but it never looked "right"...as it was after 2 in the morning. But that's no excuse , of course !
Thanks !

Thanks Steve, I was trying to match her up, but didn't think of the saturation, ended up blurring her a bit.
Thanks Gordon, it made me laugh as well.

Re: Challenge 511: On the wing
Thank you, Steve. I got a considerable amount of help from Gordon this week. So, my biggest THANK YOU goes to him.

I did not know how to make the propeller look like it was moving. Anyone?

Hi Emy,

A few people have raised various questions on this subject so I'll put together a short tutorial on the 'whys and the wherefores' of spinning propellers; with any luck I'll be able to post within the next couple of days.

Re: Challenge 511: On the wing
Thanks Steve.

The new wings were constructed from a rectangle filled with a custom gradient with about six samples taken from the wing root. This was scaled and tapered until it looked like a wing and the wing tip was then rounded off. Transparency was locked and a teeny bit of Gaussian Blur added.

Some really good and funny work this week.

Actually no Sara. Because your second was a real improvement on your first.

Thanks Steve, I must have used a different shot, I took a few at the time.
