Yaaayyy! How can you not like the Reds? I had a ride scheduled with them back in 1982. It was cancelled on me for weather reasons and I never got another opportunity. ![]() _________________ ![]() |

Had no idea Steve so I just played with a few layer styles on the shade. Love your fly James and a nice hit on that confounded mirror Anna. Again a bunch of imaginative and differing entries. ![]() |

I've posted this elsewhere before so I'll not repeat the details. I actually flew with them. I was so sick I passed out!! ![]() Mind you the first two minutes, during which I was conscious, were two of the most exhilarating of my life. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 549: A subtle exercise
The hardest part of this week's Challenge, it seems, was understanding what on earth I wanted you to do. Nonetheless some of you came very close to reproducing the original shade, and the rest of you had fun with creative flourishes. DavidMac was the first to dive in, with a lightly shaded lamp that's not at all a bad solution. But do those bolts appear to be hovering? And shouldn't the right hand side reflect the bright wall just a little? I like the lit versions in the second entry - and that's quite a moth it's attracted. And the teasing of Michael Sinclair is charming! Like many members, GKB ignored the instructions and instead riffed on the shape of the outline, with a beautifully conceived brass lamp and shade, against remarkably restrained wallpaper (I always tend to go over the top with wallpaper). One small point: I like the way the cord hangs out of the bottom of the tube, but the tube itself could do with a little wall thickness. A very convincing second entry; and I like the translucent subtlety of the rippled glass shade in the third entry. You do like lamps with pull cords, don't you. A touch of genius from Mariner, who has turned the shape of the shade into a magnificently realised beer glass - brilliant! And a welcome change of avatar, too. I like Mondrian well enough, but it's good to see what you really look like. A rather solid shade from Emy, with a new light switch - but wouldn't the switch shadow be coming directly away from the light source? You should sack your electrician. His attempt to channel in the wiring is rubbish. A first for James - I don't think you've tackled insects before. A nicely lit entry, perhaps just a touch too dark on the right. Still, that's the most entertaining fly I've seen all year. A neatly lit shade from Vibeke, which raises the question: would a lit-up shade cast its own shadow? I think we need a buddhist monk to deal with that one. I greatly enjoyed the ceramic lamp in the second entry - a very appealing shape. Very fine lighting from tooquilos, with a real sense of luminosity inside the shade. I enjoyed the sorry tale of lamp failure in the animated version - and what a brilliant integration of the mirror from last week's Challenge! Of course if Linda Eckert had her way the lamp would be flat, which would make the whole thing a lot easier... but then that wouldn't be much of a Challenge! Subtle shading indeed from srawland, and the attached decal of the daffodil is also neatly shaded to suggest the rounded shape. I like the way the bolts have an opaque backing in the second entry - very well observed! A surprisingly on-topic entry from michael sinclair, with a splendid wrought bronze holder for the shade - and I really like the shading on the glass itself. But that wallpaper! A little... Napoleonic, wouldn't you say? And even more so in the second entry. As for the third entry - really? Cloud wallpaper? Complete with Red Arrows? Their vapour trail should really remain in place after the planes have gone, of course. I like matt's marbling on the shade, and the soft floral wallpaper behind it. Could the marble be made to appear more as if it bends around, though? Try a Horizontal application of the Spherize filter. Deborah Morley has come the closest yet to reproducing the shade - due mainly to the understanding of the way the right hand side would pick up a reflection off the wall. Very good! All that's needed now is a touch of shadow next to those bolts... A shade within a shade, I think, from Jota120; but if the outer one is made of glass, shouldn't it refract the inner shade? The shade works rather well on Ant Snell's bed - neatly counterpointing the bulkhead lamp opposite. What an intriguing design! Although how you get away with having so little clutter on your bedside table defeats me. There's a splendid satin feel to Frank's entry, and although it's nothing like the real shade it's certainly cause for thought. But what's being reflected on the right? A ceramic beehive from Darren - and why not. Or it could be a stylised corn cob. I like the intricate tattoo above! Glorious work from Daniel Millar, who has managed to reflect the whole room in his entry - what a great idea! I really like this approach! Although I couldn't lie in a hotel bed staring at that cowboy picture. ___________________ So… the big reveal. Here it is, in all its glory; subtle, indeed! ![]() |

Thanks for the tip, Steve. Question: how would I go about removing the shadow on the right hand side of your original? |

Re: Challenge 549: A subtle exercise
Thank you, Steve. Daffodils are my favorite spring flower. I love the way they smell. Where I used to live in Almaden Valley a previous tenant had planted a huge number of different kinds of daffodil bulbs. The first spring they came up it was glorious. The following winter a herd of wild pigs descended from Santa Teresa County Park and rooted up all but a couple of them. _________________ I'm still learning. |
