Well, I must have done something right this week. Thank you all very much for your compliments David, Loyd, Deborah, Gordon, Michael, Sara and, of course, Steve.

Of course you do realise that you've denied poor Steve of any constructive criticism of my architectural precision.

He'll survive. He might even find something else ....

My submission took much longer than I thought it would, and I'm still not pleased with it.

Tiny understated animations beautifully done!

A fun homage to Douglas Adams from GKB, showing the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, complete with baffled whale (and if you have no idea what all this is about, you seriously need to listen to the original radio series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, from 1978 ). Intelligent placement of the reflected sign on the glass ceiling - I had to do some contortions with mirrors to prove to myself that you’d got it right. Some nice references in the animated version - but you really need to check out rotoscoping in After Effects, so you can add moving characters to your animations.

Thanks Steve. I totally agree about the radio series but I really should emphasise that the film version is complete rubbish as it misses out so much of what is otherwise a coherent story. The SFX are great but that's all.

As for rotoscoping - I haven't done any and did think (very briefly) about doing it for this Challenge but couldn't get any useable footage capture and it was waaaaaaaaayyyyyy too hot in the computer room to start some serious experimentation ... but one day.

Excellent work everyone - I never cease to be amazed at the different directions that forum members' minds take.

Is the bottom of the pool three dimensional, with raised dividers between the panels? Only the placement of the tile texture would suggest that the design is painted on as a tromp l’oeil.

I wish I knew. I was floundering around with this one. It simply doesn't make sense in the end. Classic case of biting off more than one can chew.

...... just wondering why Blofeld is about four metres tall. Curious perspective in this one.

Hmm lens height about four foot and looking slightly up at him. Yes he is. I wasn't comfortable with it at the time but couldn't find a better angle on him. So lets just pretend that he is on a dais that is out of the bottom of picture.

Thanks Steve.

Re: Challenge 715: Ceiling wax
Thanks Steve,

I made a final version with a reflection but had all kinds of problems. I ran out of memory when adding the reflection (not to mention when rendering) and was forced to add it in blocks of 25 frames. (To get the day to night transition I had to use a minimum of 100 frames.) That led to registration issues but was able to figure out a way around that.

The full size version grew to 32MB with the reflection and I only had three choices, reduce the physical size, reduce the number of colors from 256 to 127, or forget the reflection... it is obvious what my decision was.

I really need to add some memory to my system.

Makes sense. But one thing about your reflection: the angle at the bottom should exactly mirror that of the scene below, so there should be no triangular gap between the structural beam and its reflection.

Thank you Steve. And I'll pass along your praise to Tony. He's quite the talent. I just told him I needed and inane and insipid conversation between two people and he came up with one before I could get the characters to him. Unfortunately, it was between an old couple over dinner. This was his second go at it and he did a splendid job. Here's a link to his podcast which tells his story http://soundcloud.com/user-27517636/podcast-welcome-to-show-business-written-performed-by-tony-adelman

The animation took so long because rendering the Fuse characters took 4 hours apiece. I had two whole days taken out of my time just on them. I was going to have a reflected room on the window so you could see what they had to look at, but I didn't have another 8 hours to render it.

I'm surprised you didn't comment on the text. In retrospect I should have done it in something "Rune-y" looking and then it would look like messages from the Norse god Ullr.
