Re: Challenge 766: Plantin's workshop
David, Gordon, and Anna really great work this week

I have not been able to make anything of the challenge this week, so I, therefore, have no entry; however, I have uploaded an engraving of a printing shop of the time, and what I would like to know is how do I turn a photo into an engraving?

Thanks Michael.

As for your question you could try this site and download the Action. I haven’t tried it myself but you might find it suitable.

or this one http://we.graphics/blog/turn-a-photo-into-an-engraved-illustration-using-photoshop/

A Stormy Night at the Workshop starring Vincent Price as the Witchfinder General, and George Sanders as Plantin.

Re: Challenge 766: Plantin's workshop
I don't have a 3D rendering program like Gordon and Anna, so I had to come up with a different approach.

First, I have to confess I did not tell Tony that Plantin was originally from France. I think he was attempting a Dutch accent. Second, I think I spent too much time watching Monty Python as a child. Third, I've got a very busy day tomorrow and didn't have time to add a shadow. It was time-consuming enough to animate the boy and Plantin.

Hi Michael, I have a book called 101 Simplified Tips and Tricks in Photoshop that has a step by step process for making an image look like an engraving. I'm sure there have got to be other tutorials online as well.

The action is based upon the tutorial using the same technique. It is pre-formatted for three degrees of fineness. It is the action I mentioned at the start of this challenge. I tried it on this challenge image and the result was far too coarse and unsatisfactory. That is not say that it couldn't be improved. I was so short of time I was looking for an instant quick fix and didn't look it into deeper. I suspect that if you were to study the tutorial and 'disassemble' the action you could write a much better one of your own.

There is a really excellent commercial engraver from Alpha Plugins but at $75 it is rather costly. I used an earlier version of this a few years ago and it was excellent. The price tag is probably quite correct from Alpha's point of view - it's a comprehensive and complex piece of software. The question is whether it is worth that much to the user relative to amount of usage.

The dutch spoken in Antwerp is flemish, a Belgian dialect of the Netherlands dutch just to the north. I have lived among Flemish speakers for fifteen years now and I couldn't even begin to copy the accent.

Second, I think I spent too much time watching Monty Python as a child.

Terry Gilliam step back!! Sara has arrived!

Loved it.

Mariner, your work is always so devastatingly impeccable I find myself almost wishing that you'd get something wrong!

Re: Challenge 766: Plantin's workshop
Thanks, David, for the huge compliment. This, IMHO, is the best work I have ever done. The extremely extensive renovations needed to be done to improve this image gave me hours and hours of pleasure, and I thank you again for submitting this.

Michael, sorry to be picky but perhaps the vanishing points of the rooftops could be adjusted a little?

Thank you, Frank. Sorry you don't have time for an animation this week. Your still is exceptional and right on brief. Love the lighting.
