Re: Challenge 770: Spiced peppers
When DavidMac posted about the ugly-veg bin It reminded me of how Mister Rogers would not have approved of the name. He was a what's-on-the-inside-is-more-important kind of person. From all reports of people who knew him Fred Rogers off the screen was exactly the same person as Mister Rogers on screen. He was committed to teaching children that they were valuable because they are unique individuals that deserve to be loved even without doing anything spectacular. Much later he was criticized as being the cause of today's youth feeling so entitled. However, the show ran nationally from 1968 until 2001. Mr. Roger's message never changed over those three-plus decades; yet it is only the cohort of children from the very last years people complain feel entitled. Surely, if it were Mr. Roger's fault, every generation that watched him would have been affected, not just the very last group. I only watched his shows for three years when I was a child. However, he had a profound effect on how I view the world. For years I never thought about how important he had been to me until I heard he died. Last week I was in the Sunnyvale Public Library and stumbled across the documentary on his life "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" I watched it 4 times. The first time I cried through the whole DVD because I realized how much I missed him. This is a clip about the documentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKJaOItfRbo Another clip about the documentary and how Fred Rogers touched people's lives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAJEhRo-TSw This is from an episode I remember watching as a child. He had found a dead fish in the aquarium and fished it out and buried it. He knew children had deep and profound emotional lives which often adults discounted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDnDs1Rz4ZQ Episode for Parents on how to explain the assassination of Robert Kennedy to children http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MRC0qu75TU 20 Facts about Mister Rogers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWHYJpJcLcU This is from two interviews with Charlie Rose in the 1990's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djoyd46TVVc And, of course, Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister_Rogers%27_Neighborhood This was from an episode in 1987. It really encapsulates Fred Rogers most important message. Note how Rogers acknowledged that doubts can be hard to shake. I had first thought to use this song but I knew that it would take all my time to sync one mouth. I wouldn't have time to do two. http://vimeo.com/308384374 In 1969 the Senate was poised to cut the funding for Public Television in the U.S. In 6 minutes Fred Rogers testimony changed the forgone conclusion. This is a link on how he did that and how to be a more persuasive speaker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DGdDQrXv5U&t=553s Oh! I just about forgot my own animation: http://vimeo.com/356793098 ![]() _________________ I'm still learning. |

Anna, I am glad you are feeling better. In the UK anyone can get a flu jab for under $30 US. Sue and I have one every autumn and neither of us have had the flu or even a common cold for over thirty years. |

Re: Challenge 770: Spiced peppers
First to spice the peppers this week was lwc, with a remarkably gnarled hand holding some remarkably gnarled peppers. All green, though, I notice. A somewhat shocking second entry, the effect heightened by the zooming in and out. The rat in the background is terrific, prompting a fine response from DavidMac. More rattiness in the third entry - with added orangery. A truly masterful fourth entry, with much subtle movement: the birds, the man’s head, the subtly wavering rabbits - and that endless stream of veg going into the rabbit’s mouth. Absolutely stunning, Loyd. And a truly trippy fifth entry - that dog’s head fits perfectly in the background. A touch of politics from GKB, whose ’ugly veg’ have taken a decidedly Trumpish turn. Nicely done - the head in the basket must have taken some time to mask. I have to admit I had to look up ‘Bocuse’ to fully appreciate DavidMac's entry - turns out he was a celebrated chef. And indeed, that’s him in the picture, I believe. Good to see the new recruit in the background! It’s a hand coloured Carmen Miranda from Josephine Harvatt, a woman noted for wearing fruit on her head. Carmen, that is, not Josephine - or perhaps both. Ay-ay AY, indeed. Makes up for shocking us with your tinned brussels sprouts. Multicoloured peppers go psychedelic in Ant Snell’s Pride entry. A great sentiment, Ant, and that’s certainly a fine suit - but your fruit looks positively radioactive. Gold-plated veg from tooquilos, nestling neatly in with the rest. Funny that the animated version should use Dancing Queen as its soundtrack - it’s been on my mind all week, as we’re playing it in my band for the first time at a gig next Tuesday. Fun to see Carmen Miranda stocking up on her 50 a day - and I really like how she’s wearing the basket too. A most impressive 3D model you’ve built there! Sorry about the flu. It’s raining fruit and veg in Frank's animation, a splendid piece of work with great sound effects. Keep at it Frank, this animation lark really seems to be taking hold. Mariner has tracked down a photo of the market place in Saint Jean d’Angély - good detective work, Michael! That’s the market building on the right. I am concerned about the pair on the right who seem to have drifted off the pavement and set up their wares in the road. Just wondering: why did you choose to arrange the people perpendicular to the road, rather than parallel? I doubt Eva Roth’s entry really was a “5 second content aware job” - but it is surprisingly effective. Do I spot some hand painted purple brushstrokes in there, though? A terrific entry from dwindt, with an anthropomorphic assembly of peppers - really nicely made. And an expert removal of the existing veg, made all the better by the addition of a few bits of debris and, of course, the reflection of the basket. Splendid work - and good to see you back, Dennis. A touching tribute to Fred Rogers from srawland, with a nicely animated pepper: is that motion automated, or did you manually sync the movement to the song? Sad to say Mr Rogers never aired in the UK, but I enjoyed finding out more about him. |

Re: Challenge 770: Spiced peppers
On the face of it this looks so simple. But lip sync is almost perfect. That can't have been easy!! Well done! I shall take time to look at Mr Rogers later. I don't think he reached our side of the Atlantic. But maybe I just missed him. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks Steve. Because I already had a group of market women from an FC I did a few years ago, and didn't think you would remember it. It saved time. |

Oh Steve! One of the most celebrated chef's in Europe. It is him in the picture yes. Yes it's good to know that our unemployed and redundant police dog was able to retrain in a new profession where his remarkable sense of smell was once more appreciated and valuable. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 770: Spiced peppers
Thanks Steve. Had a little more time last week to learn the program , I do a lot of post production in PS before importing to Hit Film. Thanks Gordon . Sara, very nice and well done tribute to Fred Rogers, truly an inspiration to children (and parents alike) - I remember the show but did not watch it as I was in teenage years before it appeared. Loved the singing pepper and as David said the lip sync was astounding. Nice work everyone and great animations Loyd. |

Re: Challenge 770: Spiced peppers
Thanks Steve. I was instantly struck by the gnarled hand and knew right away how I would use it. As is often the case, I made quite a few versions of the "trippy" animation, and found it difficult to decide on which one to use as an entry. For fun this was the runner-up... ![]() |

Re: Challenge 770: Spiced peppers
It's manually done. Its why I mentioned that I wanted to do the song in this link: http://vimeo.com/308384374 because the produce being "ugly" really fit. However, I knew I didn't have time to sync two characters. The most amazing thing about Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was that Fred Rogers would talk to children about things that were going on in the world at the time. He discussed war, racial prejudice, the assassination of Robert Kennedy, and a myriad of other subjects. I remember as a child seeing the news reports about the war in Vietnam and not understanding that it was far away. I was frightened that the planes flying overhead in my neighborhood would start dropping bombs. Fred Rogers did a whole week about war. I was right there with Henrietta Pussy Cat when she said she was "Meow, meow frightened, meow, meow". I was too and, just like her, no one was listening to me either. Mister Rogers was able to explain the war in a way I could understand and know that it wasn't going to start taking place where I lived. _________________ I'm still learning. |

Re: Challenge 770: Spiced peppers
Thank you, David. I could only do this because I'm out of work right now. It took me two full days to do just the mouth. The arms and eyes were a snap after that. Do look into Fred Rogers. He was an amazingly talented man, besides being a kind and gentle soul. A lot of people didn't get him. People find it hard to believe someone could be that good. But, by all accounts from people who knew him, he was just GOOD. _________________ I'm still learning. |

Thank you Frank. I had wanted to use this song: http://vimeo.com/308384374 But I knew I didn't have time to sync two characters. I wish I had kept watching his show, but I drifted away from it when I was 7 or 8. You will find you have to do a lot of Photoshop work before you can do any animation work. _________________ I'm still learning. |

Thanks for the kind words Steve. When I saw the challenge name, the first thing I thought of was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (hence the broken heart, club and band...and the yellow submarine floating in his head)...and this time, John has the privilege of being the last pepper standing. Lovely images and video clips everyone. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |
