I wanted to give more direction for Snowy jumping into the water. I also wanted to add some ripples around him. I'm not sure whether I did him justice but I've been staring at this image to long. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Didn't quite get to what I wanted, but thought I would upload anyway. Using my own images. ![]() _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
First to sample Gordon’s mushroom this week was DavidMac, with a clever pun - but one that’s beautifully realised, with five mushrooms surrounding the radiator and perfectly lit text. A perfect cover in the second entry, with a splendid treatment of the mushroom. Where did you find the devil and angel Snowy? I don’t recall them from any of the books. A fine rendering from lwc, although personally I’d flip the mushroom horizontally to make the lighting more consistent. Or, indeed, flip Tintin, as you’ve done in the second entry. Astonished to see you’re not familiar with Tintin; did he not make it to the US? He’s such an integral part of European culture that I thought his reach was global. It would be like saying that someone in Europe hadn’t heard of Batman. Or, indeed, Spiderman, who makes a guest appearance in the second entry. Nicely done - but you lose points for infecting the Forum with Comic Sans. A very evocative third entry, with beautiful lighting - I like the mushrooms in the shadows. And a very fine seaplane coming in to land in the fourth entry: the motion of the water against the boat is fantastic. The subtle motion in the fifth entry is the best of all - the grass, Tintin’s head, the birds... very fine. But you really must rid yourself of Comic Sans. Delighted to see the moose return in the sixth entry! A beautiful scene from dwindt, with a perfectly-shaped island. Is that Tintin about to land by parachute? Subtle indeed, especially with the almost out of shot plume of steam on the right. And what an extraordinary second entry: has Tintin finally grown up? A tremendous piece of work. Perfect. And is that third entry entirely 3D modelled? It must be, judging by the reworking in the fourth entry. Extraordinary. Fabulous. Looks like I’ve pressed one of Tom's trigger word buttons… a beautiful piece of mysticism. I like the way the ivy is winding over the man’s arm, and the lightning from the mushroom. Very mystical. A magical fairyland from tooquilos, with the mushroom inhabited by little sprites. Very tasty - and a perfect reflection of the moon on the water. I like the way the meteorites converge at the start of the animated version (terrific lighting there, by the way). A great splashdown, and what a great dancer. But for me it’s the fairy on the swing who really brings the scene to life. Stunning. A cute pun from Ben Mills, neatly brought to life. I was never a devotee of Tin-Tin-Tin but I do know that Lassie was always played by a male dog. Brilliant work from michael sinclair, with a blooming mushroom that sports shark fangs (and I’m sure we’ve seen those fangs from you before, Michael). But for me it’s Snowy who really steals the scene: the subtle movement of Tintin’s arm, and the motion of the shadow, are a real joy. Among your best work, Michael. Good to see Josephine Harvatt getting political again, and a nicely comic treatment of the cast. Neat. An intricately modelled Blu-ray box from Ant Snell, with a version of Tintin I hadn’t seen before - was that from a live action film? I like the cellophane wrapping. Some very curious perspectives going on here, though. Good to see you back, Ant. It’s that man again… Potus v Potus from JimH, with DT neatly superimposed onto the mushroom. Paradise Lost, though? That sounds rather despondent! Veering off topic, Mariner has ditched Hergé in favour of Lewis Carrol. A beautifully made scene from Alice in Wonderland; is that all handmade? Tenniel would have been proud of you. I suspect that’s Vibeke's grandchild on the beach with the giant nestling mushroom. A good idea, and I think moving the mushroom forward could have integrated it into the scene better; at the moment it’s almost behind her. ___________ A terrific set of entries this week. Huge thanks to Gordon for the starting image. |

Excellent work from everyone. I am sorry that I didn’t have any time to participate this, too busy with another project. _________________ Time flies like an arrow but fruit flies like a banana. |

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
Thanks Steve. Yes, every bit is handmade except the rocks, the toadstool and the sky. It took a very long time and I learned a lot about vectors with raster masks. This was all good fun but I nearly missed the deadline. John Tenniel - now I don't know if his drawings were done in pencil or ink, but either way the man had enormous talent. Just take a close look at the original of my graphic and you will see what I mean. |

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
I'd love to able to claim I thought of them myself but you know quite well that I can't draw well enough for that! I across them while searching for Tintin and Haddock and they seemed perfect hallucinatory material. They weren't in bubbles - just simply as they were. I don't remember them in any of the books either, so maybe someone else playing with them .......... A fun week. Thanks. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thank you Steve. Yes, almost the entire scene of all 3 images are 3D. Even 3d fur. The 4th scene wakes around the rocks were painted in. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

The devil and angel Snowy comes from Tintin in Tibet, page 19. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
Thanks Dwindt. I did wonder if they came from one of the books but couldn't place them at all in my somewhat defective memory. I simply found the two figures on their own without any bubbles or other clues. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 833: Magic mushroom
A few were published in America during the the 1950s, but never gained any real interest. (Wikipedia)
Source - Wikipedia In 1968 I had just bought a new red convertible, my mind was on other things than comics... ![]() Sorry about the comic sans, it seemed appropriate at the time... A fun challenge, thanks Steve! (edit) P.S. The moose was a last minute bit, my grand-daughter had just sent me a photo of my great-grandson in a 'Batmoose' shirt, it just seemed like the thing to do. |
