I forgot to mention Josephine and Michael as good entries. Michael clean and clear as always, but please tell me what the "deliberate mistake" is. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
Micheal your animation is one of the smoothest and most convincing I have ever seen from you. The idea of planting the pub in the cliff is truly surreal.
I though that was what Steve was after. He suggested location and green screen. Being sometimes a somewhat literal minded soul, I just followed his brief. I have to go out now but wil get back to on the reflection this afternoon. Easiest way is a quick sketch which I cant 'do now. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
Plans have changed. So drawing done. You can download this for posterity. ![]() The basic law of reflection states that the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence. This means that in Steve's photo the angle is quite shallow and therefore reflects the bins. To reflect the wall opposite he would need to be further inside the alleyway and thus the angles much steeper. Hope this is clear. ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David, I think it is wonderful and admirable how you can understand and go on to explain the principles of angles and reflections. I have never been able to get my head around it for nearly 20 years now. I work under the premise that if it looks wrong, then it is. So I keep moving and changing it till it looks right. I've just added a symbol to your original image which describes where I fit into the equation ![]() Thank you for trying to explain it ![]() ![]() _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
Interesting stuff, David. To give myself a clue I take a piece of A4 paper and draw a thick horizontal line across it. Then I take a small hand mirror and hoid it's edge against the paper, moving the mirror until the reflection looks about right. Guesswork. A bit like Anna, really. |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
Michael, that's what Anna meant by saying "something to do with with colour"; therefore gold being replaced with red . ![]() David thank you for the explanation: I was totally unaware of this phenomenon until you explained it. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
Although I know the theory which was needed here for a clear explanation, I also work from instinct .... but it's easier when it's backed by knowing the theory. I have been known to do similar to your mirror trick using a desk lamp to plot shadows. The empirical method is often by far the best method however crude and simple the equipment. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Some of the techniques you use are pretty arcane to me. The sum of our knowledge is vastly exceeded by the sum of our ignorance. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
[/quoted] David, thank you for your comments. Classic and clean is exactly what I am always aiming for, along with light and shadow contrast. Anna is right, and so are you. It wasnt' very hard to spot the mistake really. [/quoted] I saw the white lamp but a lamp could be painted white. I was drawn to the reflection...hence the "flip it." and that why I thought David was depicting reflection angles...lol. My bad. I still believe you should flip the reflection in the windows. That's the most evident thing that stand out for me. Anna, have you ever played pool, billiards or snooker. That's your angle of reflection. Ask Pythagoras.... ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Water Wall Don't ask!........... I don't know what! I don't know why! If anyone can tell me what this is about please do. I simply decided to try the latest Affinity Photo after a couple of years absence and used the image to do it. I was just playing. Like Topsy, "It jes' growed". ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I think it has great potential David. It reminds me of this scene from the Pirates of the Caribbean. Dennis, only ever played once and that was a disaster ![]() ![]() _________________ Wicked Witch of the West:I'll get you, my pretty! And your little dog, too! |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
I'm utterly hopeless at strategy based games. ![]() I like the ones with logical puzzles like the wonderful classic Myst series or the newer Room series. I did once (twenty years ago with Corel Photo Paint) actually try to design an illusion based board game. A bit in the spirit of the old "Snakes and Ladders". Problem was when I laid the paths and ladders out 'flat' the topology of the board was so completely illogical that I quite simply couldn't devise any kind of game play! So it was a turkey that never flew. ![]() Sorry for the distraction Steve. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
Michael, I never said well done for your wonderful, smooth clip. You're setting the bar high for yourself. Lovely stuff. David, I love this. I remember it from way back. You have more in your collection that you have done that are worth showing again. Beautiful. I've had such a week, I woke up thinking it was Friday, opened the site to read Steve's comments and got pretty worried by 12h00, believing Steve was sick or something. Thank goodness I never asked. Well, shortly after I realised my mistake...lol. So I decided I had a nice quiet day, why not try twist the image into a 3D scene. This is my draft as the original, with slight tweaks is rendering at the moment...and it's taking loooong! So i'll post this one and if the other finishes and I have time tomorrow, i'll post it. This is not the Golden Lion, nor the Lion Inn. It's lyin' in. Due to the pandemic sweeping the world, I thought it was appropriate for the plague doctors to come out and do their thing. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 855: The Golden Lion
A strange and somewhat biblical parting of the sea by Anna. Strange and complicated works by David. Deep gloom from Dennis. After all this, something completely boring and believable by me, next. |
