Very nice Michael. I wouldn’t expect anything less.

Legend has it that Charlie Chaplin entered a look alike contest for a joke - and came second

Very nice Michael. I really like the new street setting and the elderly gent taking a nap.

I think, that as with my first entry, the only thing we left of the original image is the main brick surround and the canopy flashings!

Thanks David. That's right. The rest was just rubbish, wasn't it.

Michael, I felt the shockwaves of the explosion in Sydney

Funny I was watching a documentary on Charlie Chaplin's childhood life in the Workhouse just today!

I did mean you but, since you mention it, I like Michael’s as well.

For those interested the cinema was known as The Avenue hence my revealed old sign. It is the second cinema on this site; the first was a wooden building built in 1917. It later burned down ‘in mysterious circumstances’ and was replaced by this building.

Re: Challenge 858: Bingo
I had hoped to do a complete animated collapse of the cinema but time didn't allow for this this week however I thought I would post the (very) basic animation that I started to show what I had in mind. This is more a 'proof of concept' than an actual submission but you get the idea of what what I was trying to do.

Michael, just for you I included a sound effect

Re: Challenge 858: Bingo
First to visit the bingo hall this week was lwc, with a rather charming pastoral image. Splendid butterfly action, a really calming piece of work. A enjoyed the elephant in the second entry, too, although the interior of the wall around the hole could take a little more attention. A really startling third entry, with a vibrant tornado. But why are some of the spinning signs reversed?

Splendid demolition from GKB, with tremendous attention to detail. I think my favourite parts are the opened windows, the pools of water and, of course, the original cinema sign behind the bingo sign. The flames in the animated version add a lot of texture; maybe the sky should move as well? Small point: most PixelSquid objects are rendered with close-up perspective. When objects such as the oil drum by the side wall are this far away, you need a touch of perspective transformation to straighten them up. Your proof of concept is tremendous! Would love to see you take this further.

A stunning nighttime recreation from DavidMac, quite Marineresque (Marinated?) in its cleanliness and detail. A tremendous cast of characters, too, and the Odeon branding is splendid: the details of the friezes and Egyptian styling work beautifully. That open lobby entrance really draws you in, and having the cigarette girl walking down the steps adds real dynamism. The lighting on the people is tremendous - particularly the side light through the lattice door on the man in the grey overcoat. David, I absolutely can’t fault this period piece. Stunning. And I like the graffiti-strewn second entry, with its exuberant decoration. I like the treatment of the paint over the windows. But are you seriously suggesting I’d be so vain as to spray a self portrait on a wall?

A slow build from michael sinclair, starting with his old favourite - a vehicle rattling down a country road. Very nicely done; I like the wheel spin, and the added reflection wobble does make a big difference. That shadow, though, looks very painted on. Bombs and petrol in the second entry - now that really is destruction. I get a strange sense of schadenfreude from seeing the truck’s radiator grille among the wreckage.

A nighttime reconstruction from tooquilos, which looks more like a church than a bingo hall: there’s something rather spiritual about those ornate lamps. I hugely enjoyed the 3D ball machine in the animated version, with all the balls spinning in zero gravity. Splendid!

A thorough rebuild from Mariner, surrounded by historic buildings. Painstaking, exacting work, as ever. I especially like the shadows of the railings on the steps - must have taken you hours. Two queries, though. The side walls of the cinema are sloping inwards; worth making vertical to match the buildings either side. And I’ve been puzzling over that open door. It seems to be opened outwards, but why are the top and bottom hidden behind the steps and canopy?

A cute retro image from Josephine Harvatt, with a cheery Chaplin all but obscuring a rather neatly rebuilt cinema. He does conveniently cover up that bush, though. Nice.

Yes, Steve, I should have made the verticals match.

... why are the top and bottom hidden behind the steps and canopy?

I overlooked that entirely.

Thanks, Steve, for another time-consuming and entertaining challenge.

Wow! Praise indeed! Thank you. I really loved this one and had a lot of fun doing it. Chance to play with lighting which, of course, I love best.

Must be your doppelgänger. Mind you I was vain enough to put my name far, far bigger on the steps.

Re: Challenge 858: Bingo
Thanks Steve I really enjoyed wrecking the cinema. I had to kick myself to stop going any further.

I might have a proper go at the ‘proof of concept’ one day but it would require lots of work to digitally rebuild the cinema … the next lockdown project?
